O
ne of my pre-Lent traditions for the past 21 years was personally inviting college students to help distribute ashes at our parish’s five Ash Wednesday liturgies. Most had never done such a thing before, and yet few ever declined. Many observed later what a powerful experience it was to interact with other believers in such ahumble and, yet, rather intimate manner.
Eric was a student I’d enlisted for an evening liturgy and he’d agreed. However, the day before Ash Wednesday he informed me via email that he’d have to cancel since he needed to spend that time studying. He added, “But don’t worry, Father. I’m all ready for Lent. I know what I’m giving up.”
That assurance didn’t assure me. I feared Eric wasn’t at all ready for Lent. If he would so easily pass up Ash Wednesday because of poor time-
management and if he presumed his path to a good Lent was determined by what- ever he’d decided to give-up, I suspected he wasn’t really “ready for Lent.”
There are few occasions on the Church calendar that I emphasize as stri- dently as Ash Wednesday. Triduum, as you’ll soon discover, is pushed more aggressively, but Ash Wednesday is a close second. That’s understandable since there’s such an intricate link — as we’ll sing in our Going Forth song on Lenten Lord’s Days — between the ash- es of this coming Wednesday and the living font of Triduum’s Easter Vigil.
But, someone invariably observes, Ash Wednesday isn’t a Holy Day of Ob- ligation, so it can’t be that important.
From a technical, legalistic sense, I guess that’s true, although in the ranking of Christian solemnities, feasts and com- memorations, Ash Wednesday has a sta- tus just short of the Sundays of Advent and Lent. The fact that someone has declared a Holy Day mandatory, and thus susceptible to indifference and vio- lation, does nothing to minimize the sig- nificance of the only day with which we begin an entire season pertaining to con- version, how we live as disciples in this life, and the promise of new life to come.
That’s what Eric didn’t get. Missing Ash Wednesday meant he’d miss an op-
portunity to be challenged and possibly enlightened by scripture and preaching.
Not being marked with ashes, he’d also not be confronted with the question of whether he’d commit to repentance and greater faithfulness to the gospel. Being absent, he wouldn’t get a Little Black Book to encourage his prayer for the
next 40 days, nor a Rice Bowl to remind him of his need to give. Not gathered with his community, he’d not be remind- ed that Lent isn’t just about him. It of- fers a challenge of conversion for each of us as disciples, but also an experience of conversion for our community and for the larger Church, which, quite frankly, is in dire need of conversion!
What’s wonderfully significant about Ash Wednesday is that it’s not a day the Church obligates us to come to Mass.
Better yet, it’s a day of such importance that we might obligate ourselves to be present to begin our Lenten experience of praying, fasting and giving; to encour- age others gathered with us in our pur- suit of self-reflection and conversion;
and to be challenged and encouraged by those with whom we’ll gather.
I mentioned some of this in an email response to Eric. I was gentle, but also somewhat direct — I learned over the years of working with college students that sometimes subtlety was not very helpful. As we stood to bless the ashes at our 9 p.m. liturgy, the last of a long day, I spotted Eric among the 200 peo- ple crammed in our crowded meeting room that we’d turned into a chapel. I hoped I hadn’t overly guilted him into being there, but was grateful that he was.
I hoped he’d realize that he wasn’t quite
“ready for Lent,” that Ash Wednesday is unlike any other day, and that it’s the only day Lent begins. TL
Ready for Lent? Really?
ARE WE THERE YET?

BEING AUTHENTIC: Today’s first reading and gospel give us a profound reflection on authenticity. Both the Book of Sirach and Jesus’ words in the gospel of Luke use vivid images to teach us about what is really important in human life. Two cen- turies before Christ, Ben Sira wrote about true wisdom which begins in our hearts and leads to living a good life. Luke’s Jesus offers a powerful sermon on hypocrisy and on those whose good lives reflect what is truly in their hearts. In the Bible,
“heart” is the word that stands for the person we really are, our true selves. It is the part of us that determines whether or not we can be faithful to our principles and values when the going gets rough. — Catholic Climate Covenant DONUT HELPERS: Families and individuals are needed to help serve donuts and coffee after Sunday morning Masses.
