Political Responsibility

We are now in the midst of our national election, and some of us have already voted. It is not my place or that of any member of the clergy to tell people how to vote. It is a matter for each individual to examine the candidates and their policies in light of their conscience to determine how they should vote, But it is the responsibility of the clergy to recall fundamental teachings of our faith in regard to politics. If we were to examine the Catholic tradition from its origins, we can discover a consistent teaching about the purpose and responsibility of the state. Saint Augustine was one of first persons to write expansively on this topic in his great work, The City of God. It speaks of a three-fold duty of the state, that is, to protect its citizens from external and internal threat, to provide for those who are weak and vulnerable, and to provide moral guidance to its citizens. Through the centuries these principles have found expression in various forms of government.

In our time Saint Paul VI articulated a profound summary of Catholic political values in a very diverse and pluralistic

world. He writes as follows: “Political power, which is the natural and necessary link for ensuring the cohesion of the social body, must have as its aim the achievement of the common good. While respecting the legitimate liberties of individuals, families and subsidiary groups, it acts in such a way as to create, effectively and for the well-being of all, the conditions required for attaining man's true and complete good, including his spiritual end. It acts within the limits of its competence, which can vary from people to people and from country to country. It always intervenes with care for justice and with devotion to the common good, for which it holds final responsibility. It does not, for all that, deprive individuals and

intermediary bodies of the field of activity and responsibility which are proper to them and which lead them to collaborate in the attainment of this common good. In fact, "the true aim of all social activity should be to help individual members of the social body, but never to destroy or absorb them" (30). According to the vocation proper to it, the political power must know how to stand aside from particular interests in order to view its responsibility with regard to the good of all men, even going beyond national limits. To take politics seriously at its different levels - local, regional, national, and worldwide - is to affirm the duty of man, of every man, to recognize the concrete reality and the value of the freedom of choice that is offered to him to seek to bring about both the good of the city and of the nation and of mankind. Politics are a demanding manner - but not the only one - of living the Christian commitment to the service of others. Without of course solving every problem, it endeavors to apply solutions to the relationship’s men have with one another. The domain of politics is wide and

comprehensive, but it is not exclusive. An attitude of encroachment which would tend to set up politics as an absolute value would bring serious danger. While recognizing the autonomy of the reality of politics, Christians who are invited to take up political activity should try to make their choices consistent with the Gospel and, in the framework of a legitimate plurality, to give both personal collective witness to the seriousness of their faith by effective and disinterested service of men.”

As we go to the polls, let us think, pray, and act so that each of us can promote the common good of our nation and of our global society.

them in the basket in the back of church marked with a Pregnancy Helpline sign and volunteers will take them to

the Sharing Center!

Make a donation to our Rosary Altar Society Rosary Altar is a parish women’s group devoted to building

church community and defraying the cost of the liturgical needs of the parish. October is the month of the rosary and

is when RA usually asks for financial help. RA covers the costs of sanctuary flowers, wine, hosts, candles, linens, and vestments, and has provided funds for special projects

like the benches outside the church, the playground structure, the gym roof, the church HVAC system, and

others. You can donate to Rosary Altar by using your monthly envelopes or the online donation page on the

parish website. Thank you!

Drive-Thru Oktoberfest!

Sunday, October 18 12:00 to 3:00 pm

Obviously we can’t have our normal Oktoberfest celebration this year, but we knew we had to find a way to have one somehow! So, we’re partnering with Karben4 Brewing to bring you a Drive-Thru Oktoberfest on

October 18. Karben4 and Vintage will have to-go beer (cans/bottles) and Sweet Home Wisconsin and Greenbush

will have food to-go. We even got the Mike Schneider Band to provide some polka music for you to enjoy while

you queue in your cars. Take your food home or, if the weather is nice, meet up with your parish friends to enjoy

your food at a nearby park (with social distancing, of course). We hope to see you there!

THIS WEEK’S STEWARDSHIP RECOMMENDATION:

WHAT YOU EAT MATTERS!

Meat production accounts for about 15% of climate warming greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Most meat comes from factory farms that are heavily polluting. Cutting back or changing the mix of meats you eat can have a big environmental impact, and can improve your health. Here is EWG’s comparison of CO2 emissions/unit of meat to your plate:

x Chicken is rated as the best meat

x Pork, turkey, farmed salmon, and cheese are almost 2x worse than chicken

x Beef is 4x worse than chicken

x Lamb is 5x worse than chicken

x Lentils, dry beans, yogurt, peanut butter, rice, nuts, tofu, milk & potatoes are +2x better than chicken.
