Introduction

The Tracking Generator replacement is now a kit due to design changes that were made to the T.G. assembly. This kit contains the parts and instructions to install the replacement T.G. Module in the ESA or EMC Analyzer. Analyzers built between March, 1999 to May, 2005 used a 3-port design (See Figure 1). Analyzers built after June, 2005 use a newer 2-port design (See Figure 2). The new 2-port T.G. Module and replacement semi-rigid cables supplied in this kit will function in any ESA or EMC Analyzer.

Procedure

Remove the Rear Frame and Outer Cover

1. Refer to Figure 3 and disconnect the analyzer from ac power (1).

2. Remove any adapters or cables (2) connected to the front frame of the instrument. 3. Carefully place the analyzer on the work surface with the front frame (3) facing down. 4. Position the handle (4) as shown.

5. Remove the four screws (5) that hold the rear frame (6) and outer cover (7) in place. 6. Remove the rear frame (6).

7. Lift the instrument rear frame (6) and the outer cover (7) up and off the instrument and set them aside.

(8)

Remove Chassis Cover

8. Refer to Figure 4 and lay the analyzer flat.

9. Remove the screws (2) and (3) attaching the chassis cover (1) to the chassis. Note that the number of screws attaching the chassis cover may vary depending upon which options are installed.

10. Remove the chassis cover (1) from the chassis.

Remove Front Frame

CAUTION Use ESD precautions when performing this replacement procedure.

The A1 front frame assembly can be extended from the instrument without detaching any connections. 11. Refer to Figure 5. Remove the two screws (1), on the bottom side of the instrument that secure the front

frame to the RF assembly.

12. Place the instrument with the top side facing up and remove the remaining two screws (2) that secure the front frame subpanel to the chassis.

(10)

13. Refer to Figure 6. Slide the front frame forward until it latches. Disengage the latches on each side of the instrument by sliding the front frame back toward the instrument a small amount and then gently pulling out the latch tabs.

14. Slide the front frame forward just far enough to reach the ribbon connector attached to J2 on the front panel keyboard printed circuit board. Disconnect the ribbon cable from J2.

NOTE Instruments with option B7B, TV Picture on Screen will have an additional cable connected to the front panel interface board that will need to be disconnected before the front frame

assembly can be removed.

16. Refer to Figure 7. Disconnect the SMB cable (1) and the SMA cable (2) from the tracking generator assembly.

NOTE The figure refers to a 3.0 GHz analyzer. Other ESA or EMC models will be different, however items (1) & (2) are located in the same location on the T.G. Assembly.

(12)

17. Refer to Figure 8. Remove the five screws (1), (four from the side and one from the back), securing the A2 Tracking Generator Assembly (2) top the chassis.

18. Carefully pull up on the Tracking Generator Assembly to remove it from the motherboard connector.

(14)

20. Refer to Figure 11. Remove and discard the (3) screws that hold the T.G. Module to the bracket using a T-10 TORX.

Figure 11 Tracking Generator Module Screws

21. Install the replacement T.G. Module onto the T.G. bracket.

22. Refer to Figure 11. Install (3) 0515-0374 new screws provided in the kit that attach the T.G. Module to the T.G. bracket.

(15)

23. Refer to Figure 12. Install the E4403-20072 semi rigid cable.

Figure 12 E4403-20072 Semi-Rigid Cable

24. Refer to Figure 13. Install the E4403-20073 semi-rigid cable.

(16)

25. Refer to Figure 14. Install the power control harness.

Figure 14 Power Control Harness

26. Refer to Figure 8. Install the completed T.G. assembly into the analyzer being careful as you plug the assembly into the motherboard. Install the (5) screws that hold the T.G. assembly to the chassis. 27. Refer to Figure 7. Reconnect the SMB cable (1) and the SMA cable (2) to the T.G. module.

Replace Front Frame Assembly

28. Refer to Figure 6. Carefully slide the front frame onto the chassis and attach the ribbon cable to connector J2 on the front panel keyboard printed circuit board. Make sure that the ribbon cable is not pinched between assemblies. If option B7B exists in the analyzer, be sure to reconnect that cable as well. Be sure to use the outermost connector on the B7B cable as the inner connector is used for grounding purposes. Align the Input connector and RF Out connector with their respective openings in the front frame.

29. Refer to Figure 5. Replace the four screws that secure the front frame to the chassis at locations (1) and

Replace Chassis Cover

30. Refer to Figure 4. Carefully position the chassis cover on the instrument as shown.

31. Replace the 15 pan head screws (3) and three flathead screws (2) as shown. Torque these screws to 101 N-cm (9 in-lb.).

Replace Outer Cover and Rear Frame

32. Refer to Figure 3. Carefully place the spectrum analyzer on the work surface with the front frame facing down.

33. Replace the instrument outer cover by matching the grill on the side of the case to the fan on the A5 power supply assembly.

34. Fit the leading edge of the case completely into the slot on the back of the front frame assembly. The rear EMI contact grid that clips onto the rear frame can come loose. When replacing the rear frame, make sure the gasket is in the correct position.

35. Replace the rear frame assembly (6) using the four screws (5) to fasten the rear frame to the instrument. Torque these screws to 236 N-cm (21 in-lb.).
