The Shawsheen Tech Adult Education Program offers apprenticeship, licensing, and hobby-shop
type courses. Our goal is to optimize student aptitude, achievement, skills, and self-improvement.
We are providing a service to the community by educating people for new and emerging
occupations. We have a course for everybody, whether it is for career advancement or for personal
enrichment. Shawsheen Tech is devoted to offering skills for life beyond school.
Shawsheen Valley Technical High School admits students and makes available to them its advantages,
privileges and courses of study without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, sexual
orientation or disability.
Courses run on a semester schedule. Fall semester runs September – December and Winter semester
January – May.
Courses offered at the Shawsheen Tech site also include college credit programs through Northern
Essex Community College for health related courses and Middlesex Community College for culinary
arts programs. Shawsheen does not register for either college. Please contact these colleges directly
for more information.

Registration:
Mail in registration/pre-registration will begin Monday, August 29, 2011 and walk-in registration will begin Tuesday,
August 30. Registrations will be accepted through the first day of class or based on availability.
Shawsheen Tech will be closed from August 9 to August 21.

Administrative Medical Assistant – For Beginners Only
Instructor: Dorothy O’Rourke
Course is designed for the student who plans to work as a front office administrative as a medical assistant in a private physician’s office or who seeks employment in a clinic or hospital setting. This course will cover the functions of working as a receptionist, office communications, office maintenance and management. Textbook additional cost. Limit 20. Course # 801

Medical Assistant

This course covers the theory/lab skills necessary to become a Medical
Assistant including vital signs, special examinations, sterile techniques, patient interviews/history taking, electrocardiography, phlebotomy and basic medical terminology. Medical/legal considerations are applied throughout the course. Textbook additional cost. Limit 20.

Decadence in Chocolate

Calling all chocolate lovers! Learn how to make delicious truffles, mousses and fudge, as well as, filled chocolates. There is a $10 food fee payable to the instructor each night of class. Limit 9.

Soups & Stews
Instructor: Chef Campanale
This will be an introduction into learning how to make homemade stocks and soups. The benefits will be discussed and the actual money savings will be realized through purchasing controls. You will be taught how to freeze them for the future as some do not freeze well. During the class we will make homemade clam chowder, corn chowder, shrimp bisque, turkey pot pie, turkey barley soup, and beef stew. Please bring containers to take about 2 quarts of soup home each night. There will be a $10 food fee per class. Limit 10.

Culinary Arts ServSafe Testing for Certificate
Instructor: Bob Roach
All restaurants require this certificate by state law. This course is an up-to-date, extensive food safety training and certification program. Materials include the 2006 FDA Food Code, the latest updates in the science of food safety and best practices used in the industry. The new edition also includes tools to help managers and operators implement critical food safety practices in their operation. Upon completion and successful test scoring, you will be issued a ServSafe certificate valid for 5 years in any state. Textbook additional cost. Limit 20.

Easy Menus
Instructor: Paula Blois
We will learn shortcuts to providing tasty, healthy meals that take less than an hour to prepare. We will also learn make ahead meals. Parents who work long hours will be able to put together easy menus, prepared ahead and ready to serve during the week. Material list provided upon registration.

600 Hour Journeyman Licensure Course
Course offered to provide electrical apprentices with electrical theory and course work required by the Commonwealth to qualify for taking the Journeyman Electrician License Exam. Entire course approximately 80 weeks (600 hours). Limit 25.

Basic Welding
Instructor: Steve Leahy
This course will develop skills in shielded metal arc welding, oxyacetylene welding, gas metal arc welding and M.I.G. gas tungsten arc welding. Cutting and fabrication will be introduced if possible. Focus will be on safety and set-up procedures. Lab fee included. Limit 12.

Advanced Welding

This course is for experienced welders. This is a loosely structured class where students can work independently on their own projects and at their own pace. OSHA 10-Hour Construction
This OSHA 10-hour outreach health and safety program is taught by an authorized OSHA trainer and results in the issuance of a 10-hour OSHA credential that is required by Massachusetts state law for anyone working on a prevailing wage job site. Ten different topics will be covered such as
Introduction to OSHA, Electrical, Fall Protection, Scaffolding, etc. A second class session may be offered pending student interest.

Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint

Students will learn the fundamentals needed to create and modify
presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint. Students should be familiar with using personal computers, mouse and keyboard. Textbook additional cost. Limit 15.

Microsoft Excel 2007
Students will learn terminology related to the computer and the Microsoft Excel application. Specific topics include: working with tabs and ribbons, create and maintain spreadsheets, creation of functions and formulas, creating charts, manipulate data and figures, create professional-looking graphics, shortcuts and toolbar commands. Introduction to Personal Computers and Office Applications
This course will include learning the mouse and keyboard. Students will gain an understanding of storage media and maintaining file folders. Students will learn terminology related to the computer. The course will be broken down into Microsoft Word 2007, Microsoft Excel 2007, Microsoft PowerPoint 2007, Microsoft Outlook and safe surfing the Internet. Limit 15.

Introduction to AutoCAD
Instructor: Daniel Bendel
This course is designed to introduce the student to the world of computer-aided drafting and design (CAD) using AutoCAD. Individual workstations are provided for each student in a computer lab setting. This course will cover: navigating the AutoCAD work environment, drawing setup, drawing objects, placing text and dimensions, editing text and objects and managing object properties. Limit 13.
