Our Mission:
Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and Dear Friends,
“And no one had the courage to ask him anymore questions.” Do you ever wonder why no one had the courage to ask any more questions? The scribe was clear and bold in his questioning of Jesus and was enthusiastic as he heard Jesus’ response. Jesus affirmed the scribe as he agreed with him and told him, as he answered with understanding, “You are not far from the reign of God.”
Perhaps the fact that Jesus answered a question asking for THE greatest commandment with TWO commandments threw the listeners off. Maybe it shook them up. I hope it shakes us up a bit. The two commandments, given as they were by Jesus, cannot be separated. When we say we love God and treat others with unkindness or disrespect, we completely disregard Jesus’ twofold command. Today more than ever, with the polarization that exists in our society, we need to love our neighbor, even the neighbor with whom we disagree, even the neighbor who speaks a different language, even the neighbor who is a different color, or sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background. The love of neighbor as oneself cannot be a conditional love.
Many young people turn away from the church because of what they see as hypocrisy. They ask me how a Church founded on the law of love can be filled with so many people who judge others harshly and exclude them for one reason or another. Jesus, in his earthly ministry showed profound love for everyone, especially the marginalized. When members of his Church criticize, disrespect and disregard the marginalized, we separate the two laws that Jesus joined. At the recently completed Synod on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment, the bishops heard that message loud and clear from the young delegates from all over the globe. At the end of the Synod, the bishops penned a letter to all the young people of the world. It bears reading.
Dear Young People,
We the Synod Fathers now address you, young people of the
world, with a word of hope, trust and consolation. In these days, we have gathered together to hear the voice of Jesus, “the eternally young Christ”, and to recognize in Him your many voices, your shouts of exultation, your cries, and your moments of silence.
We are familiar with your inner searching, the joys and hopes, the pain and anguish that make up your longings. Now we want you to hear a word from us: we wish to be sharers in your joy, so that your expectations may come to life. We are certain that with your enthusiasm for life, you will be ready to get involved so that your dreams may be realized and take shape in your history.
Our weaknesses should not deter you; our frailties and sins must not be an obstacle for your trust. The Church is your mother; she does not abandon you; she is ready to accompany you on new roads, on higher paths where the winds of the Spirit blow stronger – sweeping away the mists of indifference, superficiality and discouragement.
When the world that God so loved, that he gave us his only Son, Jesus, is focused on material things, on short-term successes, on pleasures, and when the world crushes the weakest, you must help it to rise up again and to turn its gaze towards love, beauty, truth and justice once more.
For a month, we have walked together with some of you and with many others who have been united to us through prayer and affection. We wish to continue the journey now in every part of the earth where the Lord Jesus sends us as missionary disciples.
The Church and the world urgently need your enthusiasm. Be sure to make the most fragile people, the poor and those wounded by life your traveling companions.
You are the present; be a brighter future.
We are the present and we need to be a brighter future. Living the twofold great commandment will certainly help us to brighten our darkened world. Let’s do it!
Peace,

Paz,
