For 30 years the Business School has been working to recognise and satisfy the training, development and opportunity needs of both individuals and organisations alike.

Committed to the development of a partnership through which the aspirations of delegates and the needs of businesses are successfully matched, our Corporate

Management Development Programme is the direct result of our work and expertise in management development.

What is the Corporate

Management Development

Programme?

Nottingham Business School’s Corporate Management Development Programme (CMDP) is a suite of accredited postgraduate programmes that blend theory with practice, in order to develop a real understanding of management issues and achieve

organisational transformation and

improvement through individual improvement. These action oriented programmes aim to develop managers who are reflective practitioners and provide opportunities for organisational, personal and academic development.

The CMDP is a flexible framework that includes three stages, and allows progressive learning and development up to master’s level and incorporates the following awards: • Postgraduate Certificate in Management

(PGCM)

• Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)

• Masters in Applied Management (MSc) Each stage stands alone and progression to the next stage is not compulsory. Delivery is flexible in terms of location and timing and can be tailored to suit your organisation’s requirements.

How does it work and what

are the benefits?

The CMDP award framework offers your organisation flexibility to develop managers operating at all levels. It allows organisations and individuals to match their learning needs and individual’s own level e.g. early junior managers (PGCM), experienced managers (PGDM) and senior / potential senior managers (MSc).

The programmes cover a wide range of essential contemporary management topics. There is the added benefit of being able to tailor the programme to meet specific business requirements and / or include electives that are particularly relevant to your organisation or sector.

Each stage is designed to have a strong experiential workplace orientation, offering managers the opportunity to take their learning into the workplace through work-based assignments and projects. This makes it easier for organisations to evaluate the return on investment.

The programmes are designed to give delegates greater self and executive

mindfulness, a strategic understanding of their organisation and the wider context, enhanced skills to be more effective in day-to-day business life and meet today’s national and global business challenges.

Ultimately our goal is to integrate three perspectives: the company, it’s employees and the academic knowledge of the Business School. As Drucker said “creativity and innovation do not happen in isolation”.

Established in 1979, Nottingham Business School was

one of the first full service business schools in the UK and

today is one of the strongest. We’re the country’s

number one for value-added undergraduate education

and are in the top 3 for the number of students studying

world class business professionals, offering an

international pipeline to business and industry.

Through a combination of rigorous research, specialist

education and world-class consultancy and intervention,

we’re transforming the performances of businesses

programmes in order to improve and underpin

organisational and industrial performance – from short

Corporate Management Development Programme (CMDP)

Postgraduate Certificate in Management (PGCM)

The aim of Stage 1 of the Corporate Management Development Programme (CMPD) is to

assist in the development of competent managers and provide a sound structure for the

continuing improvement of managerial practices

Objectives of the Corporate Management Development

Programme

PGCM programme objectives

On successful completion of the programme, participants should be able to:

• demonstrate a critical understanding of their organisation along with its external and internal contexts and how they are managed;

• apply relevant knowledge to a range of complex situations, taking into account the interactions within areas of their business or organisation;

• identify and justify appropriate tools and techniques to allow detailed investigation into relevant business and management issues;

• undertake independent critical research applied to a business and management topic;

• recognise the importance of reflective analysis in evaluating and extending their own learning and development and enhancing their performance at managerial level.

PGCM programme structure

and content

The PGCM stage comprises six distinct modules, five of which are undertaken as a group, and one of which the delegates must time-manage themselves.

The modules are:

Business Strategy

Module content focuses on your

understanding of the external environment and the techniques used to manage external influences on your organisation.

Managing People and Organisations

This module seeks to develop a broad understanding of the key human resourcing issues within organisations.

Finance

This module highlights financial techniques and helps you to develop an understanding of the general financial environment.

Managing Operations

This module seeks to develop an

understanding of the concepts, models and frameworks that contribute to the

management of operations and projects.

Marketing

The focus of this module is to develop marketing skills and an understanding of operations management by adopting a customer-focused approach.

Research Project or Elective

This module is a little different from the others in that it allows you to research specific individual concepts, models or journals and to consider their potential impact within your organisation, or it’s supply chain.

Personal Development and Career Advancement

Skills and competencies are developed in this module to enable you to become more

effective as a manager in the workplace and to facilitate career progression. Individual learning skills are also improved.

Optional residential weekend

In the early stages of the programme, delegates may spend a weekend at Lakeside. This is a national training centre on the shore of Lake Windermere in the Lake District. A wide range of activities provide members with an insight into different behaviours, roles and business-related skills in a supportive environment. This event also provides the opportunity for members to consider their own personal effectiveness.

Assessment

Assessment at the PGCM stage focuses on work-based assignments rather than

examinations. Individuals apply their learning and understanding from each module back to their own organisation. In addition, a personal development record is completed.

Flexible delivery

The programme is designed to be delivered in blocks over a period of approximately one year.

Postgraduate Diploma in Management

Stage 2 of the Corporate Management Development Programme (CMPD) is the Postgraduate

Diploma in Management (PGDM). The PGDM builds upon the foundations laid by the

Postgraduate Certificate in Management (PGCM) by continuing to strengthen the capacity of

individuals to manage their own learning and development.

An integrated approach is taken to management activities and delegates develop their

understanding of corporate-level decision-making and its impact on day-to-day management.

Masters in Applied Management (MSc)

The aim of the Masters is to encourage delegates to learn experientially and challenge

perceptions and interpretations of business management. By demonstrating innovation,

initiative and insight into attitudes of responsibility, ethics and leadership you will be able to

acquire and apply knowledge to enhance your independent research and critical skills, thus

improving your strategic management capabilities.

PGDM learning outcomes

On successfully completing the PGDM programme, delegates should be able to: • demonstrate knowledge and critical

understanding of the established theories and current issues of business and management and their application within organisations;

• conduct research into business and management situations in order to critically evaluate existing and new approaches to practice;

• acquire and analyse data and information, evaluate the relevance and validity of data and synthesize information in the context of new situations;

• demonstrate creativity in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to develop and interpret knowledge in business and management;

• exhibit qualities and transferable skills relating to communications, organisation, management and working with others.

PGDM programme structure

and content

The PGDM comprises six distinct modules. The modules are:

Managing Information and Knowledge

This area of study helps you to develop an understanding of the role that information plays in the management of an organisation.

Managing Change

This module seeks to develop an understanding of the need for change in organisations, the nature and complexity of organisational change and the implications for all those involved.

Strategy Management

This module focuses on the study of the knowledge, skills and attitudes that inform and structure the strategic direction of the organisation.

Elective

A variety of electives are available, designed to meet business and delegate needs.

Management Project

This module demands the examination of an organisational issue in the light of the theories and modules that have been developed throughout the programme.

Consultancy Project

(one week full-time)

This Live Business Consultancy project enables companies and delegates to investigate real business issues, by developing consulting skills and applying learning from the course to a real business situation.

Clients are directors of local businesses who have highlighted areas where consultancy is required. For the PGDM participant the Consultancy Project offers the most

challenging opportunity to extend and stretch their knowledge and skills developed

throughout the whole course.

Masters learning outcomes

On successfully completing the Masters programme, participants should be able to: • demonstrate critical understanding of the

theories and current issues of leadership through strategic management and the development of conceptual frameworks to guide their application within

organisations;

• demonstrate creativity in the application of knowledge;

• demonstrate and apply independent research and critical skills enabling the investigation and evaluation of valid and relevant strategic management issues; • exhibit qualities and transferable skills

relating to communication, organisation, strategic management and working with others.

MSc Masters programme

structure and content

The Masters stage comprises three distinct modules:

International Business Management

To respond to global challenges this module addresses many of the contemporary, historical, and cultural issues facing companies and individuals.

International Consultancy Project

This module enables application of your knowledge and management skills in the international arena. Building on the PGDM Stage 2 Consultancy Project, you will be invited to undertake an international consultancy project of your own choosing. The timing of this project at the end of the programme gives maximum benefit to the delegate and client organisation alike.

Management Research Project

This module will develop your analytical abilities as needed by leaders who are expected to make future strategic actions and decisions. It will also encourage you to develop effective ideas for building organisational capacity for strategic action, learning and innovation.

Assessment

Assessment of Stage 3 of the Masters continues with work-based assignment reports but also includes group work assessment as well as an extended research project. There will also be an examination to assess your knowledge and learning gathered over the duration of the programme. A Personal Development Record is also required to be completed for Stage 3.

Over 400 projects have been completed, providing organisations with practical

and relevant advice.

Live Business Consultancy Projects – putting theory into

practice

A unique feature of the Business School’s CMDP is the opportunity for delegates to put theory

into practice, through a range of experiential elements.

Benefits to individuals and organisations alike

The CDMP is the result of 20 years working with top companies, learning with them what their

needs are and always seeking to meet and respond to those needs. Our thanks continue to

go to those companies who can see the value of extending their relationships, both in terms

of the future development of their company, and on the means of achieving their strategic

objectives.

The Research Project, the Live Consultancy Project and the International Consultancy Project are essential elements of the CMDP.

Research Projects

Delegates are encouraged to build upon their learning outcomes at every stage of the CMDP, which benefit them and the client company. The Research Project in the PGCM allows project companies to identify issues and or key concepts for initial investigation. The PGDM Management Project enables these investigations to be developed up to the discussion stage. This culminates with the extended project work at the Masters level, where delegates implement recommendations within the client company.

Live and International Consultancy Projects

Through the Consultancy and International Consultancy Projects, groups of up to four delegates undertake a real live consultancy project within a company who have approached the Business School with a request for help in relation to a specific issue. The course delegates, as acting consultants, will attempt to respond to the specific issue, reporting back to both the company and the Business School on appropriate solutions. For over 20 years, delegates have worked with a variety of local, national and international businesses, offering practical and beneficial advice that has brought real business improvements. People become better managers in a variety of ways. The CMDP builds upon the practical ways in which people develop their managerial understanding, sensitivity to organisational events and ability to make informed business choices and decisions. Enhanced awareness and competence in all of these will benefit programme participants in their personal lives as well as in their professional and managerial careers.

Nottingham Business School provides an integrated and innovative approach to management development. It has earned an international reputation for its teaching, research and consultancy and has been ranked amongst the top business schools within the UK reaffirming the investment in development of its services.

As part of Nottingham Trent University, the Business School recognises and satisfies the training and development needs of both individuals and organisations alike. It is committed to the development of a partnership through which the aspirations of students and the needs of businesses are successfully matched.

“...one of the companies represented on the course is working with NBS and a key supplier on

an initiative aimed at driving waste out of one of their procurement routes... there is every

likelihood that this will lead to reduced costs for STW and an improved market share for the

supplier.”

Resources, facilities and support

New technology is changing the way people work all over the world and at Nottingham

Business School it’s no different. We are continually investing in our facilities and

transforming our learning and teaching environment to create an inspiring and innovative

culture well into the 21st Century.

Resources and facilities

Library resources

The learning resources available to delegates at Nottingham Business School are provided primarily by the University’s Library and Learning Resources (LLR), who work proactively to support the teaching, learning and research needs of all academic departments.

The library facilities for Management courses are excellent. They include over 400,000 books and 28,000 journals (both reference and loan), plus audio-visual materials and special collections (e.g. the statistical series). Online database searches are available to support the work of participants, with full support being given by members of LLR. LLR holds licences for the use of more than 100 electronic databases, many of which are networked across the campus. External use of Internet-based materials and electronic journals is supported by the Electronic Library gateway that participants can access from anywhere in the world

IT resources

Participants will be able to use University and Business School computing facilities (which include some 24-hour access provision). Within the Management Centre there are class, as well as individual, computer facilities, all of which are Internet-linked, at the disposal of participants. There is also a dedicated IT resource centre for postgraduate participants in the Management Centre. The Harvard Lecture Theatre is linked so that laptops can be used for participants’ presentations.

NOW – the virtual learning

environment

e-learning within NBS is well supported, with several initiatives linking the Business School to wider University networks. NTU has installed a cutting-edge virtual learning environment (NOW – the NTU Online Workspace) which offers considerable capabilities and resources for e-supported learning, teaching and research.

The system encompasses some of the latest innovations in learning, and not only extends the range of learning activities that

participants can access online, but also provides a more integrated and structured set of tools for developing learning pathways through the materials.

Support

There are many reasons why people come and study at Nottingham Business School -advancing a career in business, developing their academic or research capabilities, taking the next step by retraining, or preparing to change jobs. Whatever the reason, we work hard to support each of our students, providing stimulating teaching, suitable learning environments and support according to their personal, pastoral and academic needs.

Our range of support services includes: careers, finance, counselling, disability support, international support, progression guidance, access to affiliated health centres and personal advice to students of all ages and from anywhere in the world.

Participants who require academic support are invited to discuss problems or issues with module leaders. Email addresses and contact phone numbers are provided in the Participant Handbook and details can be found on NOW, which will provide further academic support. Participants will be allocated a personal tutor / mentor at the start of the programme and will be able to contact them about any aspect of the course of study and problems they may be experiencing with it.
