EFLECTION“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.” (Mk 1:35)
Jesus Christ was God become man. His human nature was united with the power of his divine person. He was perfect, sinless, without any selfishness, laziness, or pride. His character was flawless, as firm as the mountains and as gentle as a mother’s caress. His mind was beyond brilliant, filled with the radiance of divine light and understanding. No emotional scars from a difficult family upbringing (Mary was without sin too, and Joseph was a saint), no personality disorders or imbalanced self-esteem – no lacks, no wounds, no imperfections at all. And yet, over and over again in the Gospels, we see him go off to be alone in prayer: “In the morning long before dawn, he got up and left the house, and went off to a lonely place and prayed there.”
Christ was perfect, God from God and light from light, and yet he needed to reserve time just to be alone with his Father; he needed to go off and pray. He even had to get up early to make time for it. Sometimes he had to stay up late in order to make time for it. But he always did it.
If he, who was perfect, needed prayer in order to fulfill his life’s mission, what does that imply for us, who are so imperfect, so weak, so vulnerable to every sort of temptation and wounded by every kind of sin? Christ was a man of prayer, and, as he himself put it, “no disciple is greater than his master” (John 15:20).

Ash Wednesday is next week and marks the beginning of the penitential season of Lent – those 40 days of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving that lead to our celebration of Easter. Since the earliest days of the Church, there has been some kind of Lenten preparation which originally varied somewhat between the Eastern and Western Churches. After the legalization of Christianity in 313 AD, early Church councils gradually standardized the practices of Lent so that, by the 4th century, the period of a 40-day fast was well accepted: the number 40 having
special significance in the Scriptures – 40 days of rain for Noah, 40 years of wandering in the desert for the Israelites, 40 days that Moses spent on Mt. Sinai to receive the Commandments and, most significantly, the 40 days that Jesus spent fasting in the desert after being baptized.
The number of days per week and what type of fasting also varied until eventually the universally accepted practice became 6 days a week for 6 weeks plus the few days of Ash Wednesday and following. Initial practices abstained from all meat products, including eggs and dairy, but eventually loosened to allow for fish and then meat on any day except Friday. This meant that in the days prior to refrigeration, the faithful would spend the time period leading up to the Lenten fast eating up their meat, eggs, cheese and butter.
In some cultures this led to the Christian practice of celebrating and feasting before the spiritual rigors of Lent began (basically becoming one big celebration from Christmas to Lent). The word carnival comes from the Latin expression carne levare which means “to remove meat”. The celebration of Carnival spread throughout the Christian countries of the world and is celebrated during the days leading up to Lent – anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks or more. In Venice Italy, the tradition of wearing masks during Carnival began in the 13th century when a caste system still existed. The masks
allowed everyone to celebrate together without concern for social status. Over time, the masks became more elaborate and are an integral part of Carnival celebrations all over the world. In the US, the most famous celebration of Carnival is, arguably, Mardi Gras in New Orleans – a custom that was brought here by that city’s original population of French colonials.
The final day of celebration falls on the day before Ash Wednesday and is called Shrove Tuesday - shrove being a word that means “to confess” as it is customary to go to confession before Lent begins. It is also called Fat Tuesday, from the French term Mardi Gras, referring to the practice of eating up all the fatty foods before Lent begins.

February 10th - Memorial of St. Scholastica, virgin - Scholastica, born in Umbria Italy around 480, was the twin sister of St. Benedict, who is known as the father of Western monasticism. Scholastica founded a religious community of nuns near St. Benedict's great monastery of Monte Cassino. Inspired by her brother's teaching, she devoted her life to seeking and serving God. She died in 547 and tradition holds that her brother learned of her death through a vision of her soul ascending to heaven in the form of a dove. She is the patron saint of nuns.
February 11th, Our Lady of Lourdes - This optional memorial commemorates the first of eighteen appearances of the Blessed Virgin Mary to a poor French girl, Bernadette Soubirous, at the grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, France in 1858. Mary asked Bernadette to do penance, to pray for sinners and to drink of the spring which erupted in the grotto. Today, this site is a pilgrimage destination for more than six million people each year who travel to Lourdes seeking physical and spiritual solace.

ornaments of the earth. Oh, it is true that we must
someday die, but in our present life God has given
us some marvelous gifts that enhance our
pilgrimage through time. Most important of all, we
have the promise from our lovely Lord that if we

we shall receive peace and all the healing grace and

Lent begins next Wednesday, February 17th. Ashes will be distributed at Masses held at 8 AM, 12 PM and 7 PM. Masses will be held in St. Augustine Church and live- streamed at staugustineparish.org/live-stream. In-person attendance is strictly limited per COVID-19 protocols and wearing of masks and social distancing are required.
In addition, ashes will be distributed on a "walk-thru-the-church-and-leave-immediately" basis from 10 -11am and 2-3pm. The blessed ashes will be sprinkled on top of your head; no touching is permitted. This form has long been standard in Italy and other parts of Europe.
