Marshall University Application for International Undergraduate Admission

STEPS TO APPLY

Marshall University is authorized by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to enroll non-immigrant visa students with F-1 or J-1 status. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT ALL OF THE FOLLOWING TO BE CONSIDERED FOR ADMISSION 1. APPLICATION FORM

Complete the International Student Undergraduate Application for Admission form.

2. INTERNATIONAL UNDERGRADUATE APPLICATION FEES • A $65 USD non-refundable application fee. Check or money

order made payable to Marshall University. To be accepted, all checks must have a 9-digit routing number. You can also pay the $65 fee with a Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover card. Contact the Marshall University Office of International Student Services for details.

• A $50 USD non-refundable transfer evaluation fee. If you have ever enrolled at any college or university and have attempted coursework, you must apply as a transfer student and pay this additional fee. You can also pay the $50 fee with a Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover card. Contact the Marshall

University Undergraduate Admissions Office for details. 3. OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS

Transcripts must be in the original language and accompanied by a certified English translation. They must contain ALL secondary school, college or university academic credits and grades. The transcripts must be sent directly to Marshall University Office of International Student Services by the designated official at the institution that you attended.

4. PROOF OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

Proof of your proficiency in English may be certified by submitting one of the following:

a. Internet-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 61 or higher.

b. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.0 or higher.

c. Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) - minimum score of 79%.

d. SAT – minimum Verbal score of 450 prior to March 2016; minimum Evidence-based Reading and Writing section score of 480 March 2016 and later.

e. ACT – minimum subscores of 18 in English and in Reading. f. Completion of Level 6 of INTO-Marshall’s Academic English

program, with minimum C’s in all courses.

g. Completion of INTO-Marshall Pathway course ENG 160 or ENG 101A with minimum C grade.

h. Successful completion of an English as a Second Language (ESL) program approved by Marshall University’s Admissions Office.

i. Person Test of English-Academic Score of 50 on PTEA. PTEA results to be sent by and from Pearson.

* English test results that were taken more than two (2) years prior to the date of application submission cannot be accepted. Some programs may require higher scores or GPA’s for admission. For more information visit the international admission website.

5. PROOF OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT (Applies to F1 and J1 Students)

Marshall University currently requires that international students demonstrate proof of financial support to cover the tuition and living expenses for one (1) academic (12 months). We estimate this amount to be $37,163 USD (subject to change). In some cases, a 50% deposit will be required in order to issue the I-20 form. Proof of financial support cannot be more than six (6) months old and may be demonstrated in several ways:

a. An affidavit of financial support from a personal sponsor (parent, relative, friend, etc.) that has been certified by a U.S. bank or financial institution.

b. A scholarship agency (government, corporation, etc.) stating the availability of funds and the intention to support your educational and living expenses for the entire duration of study at Marshall University. c. Personal funds, provided you submit documented evidence of a bank

statement from a U.S. bank or financial institution or its affiliate in U.S. dollars (USD). A statement from your employer certifying that you have been granted study leave and salary support arrangements may also be acceptable.

6. PROOF OF MEASLES AND RUBELLA IMMUNIZATION A valid immunization record including measles and rubella (or MMR)

vaccinations and all other required vaccinations or screenings. Students born prior to January 1, 1957 are exempt from the measles and rubella (or MMR) immunization requirement.

International students pursuing a degree at Marshall University are required to pay a $2,000 enrollment deposit prior to enrolling/registering for classes or applying for on-campus housing.

DISTANCE LEARNING

Marshall University offers undergraduate programs which are conducted entirely online. Distance-Only students are not expected to have a campus or classroom presence during their academic careers and are eligible for a distance tuition rate in lieu of regular tuition and fees. International Distance Learning students will not be issued an I-20, and, therefore, proof of financial support is not required. For more information, please visit

APPLICATION DEADLINES

• June 15 - for students applying to the fall semester beginning in August • October 15 - for students applying to the spring semester beginning in January • March 15 - for students applying to the summer terms

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Airport Shuttle Service

The Office of International Student Services at Marshall University provides a reliable airport pick-up service the week before every semester begins. If you wish to use this service, please complete and submit the Airport Pick-up Arrival Survey at www.marshall.edu/iss/arrival-form. Marshall University has two airports nearby where the Office of International Student Services staff can perform pick-ups: Huntington Tri-State Aiport (HTS) and Charleston Yeager Airport (CRW). Huntington Tri-State Airport is about 15 minutes from Marshall’s campus, and Charleston Yeager Airport is about 50 minutes from campus. There is an airport pick-up fee of $50 for all pick-ups at Huntington Tri-State Airport and a $150 fee for all pick-ups made at Charleston Yeager Airport.

Health Insurance

All international students are required to provide proof of health insurance prior to registration for each term at Marshall University. Please visit www.marshall.edu/iss/healthinsurance for more information.

Housing & Residence Life

All freshmen and sophomores must reside on campus unless a waiver is granted. International students will receive information about applying for on-campus housing after their enrollment deposit has been paid. Please visit www.marshall.edu/housing for more information.

Orientation

The Office of International Student Services holds a mandatory international student orientation the week before regular classes begin each Fall and Spring semester. It is a requirement that new international students attend this meeting. International students will receive additional information about orientation after their enrollment deposit has been paid. Topics discussed in the orientation include:

•Immigration policies and regulations for international students •Academic advising and course registration

•Paying tuition and fees (Marshall University Office of the Bursar in Old Main 101)

•Getting a Marshall University ID card (Campus ID Office on the first floor of Drinko Library)

•Activating your Marshall University computer and email account (IT Service Desk on the first floor of Drinko Library) •Services, resources and benefits available to all Marshall University students
