Distribution on the region
Located in the Pisa province (Tuscany region, Italy). The district belong to an area of 330 Km2.

About 10,000 employees, with main skills concerning the traditional tannery-related activities.

The total production of the District covers the 35% of the Italian production of tanned skins and the 98% of the Italian production leather for soles.

Division of labour among firms
Vertical division with 3 macro production stages: preparation of hides and skins, tanning (about 400 firms), post-tanning activities. Most of non-tanning activities are executed by third-party companies (ancillary firms).

The logistic service is organized by external companies and local providers. Recently Associazione Conciatori (Tanners Association) has signed an agreement with UPS.

Usual PC-based (main administrative functions and production control). Adoption of standard procedures of communication between the firms (same protocols, format, etc...). Creation of an ICT network between the firms of the ID and the Public Administration.

Agreements and control mechanisms among partnersCreation of 2 associations (Associazione Conciatori di S.Croce and Consorzio Conciatori di Ponte a Egola) in order to solve common problems concerning different objectives: industrial development, ambient protection, research, work force teaching, contracts, marketing and export.
Responsibilities in the network
The 2 associations are the District coordinators, and act as representatives before all levels of public administration, labour unions, and economic authorities and councils.
Existence of collective agreement with external bodies
Agreement with the local public administrations (Pisa province, municipalities) to create a society for education and research (POTECO Polo Tecnologico Conciario).
Agreement with the University of Pisa.
Creation of the trademark “Pelle di Toscana”.
