Residence permit application
Foreign researchers who plan to stay in France for longer than three months must apply for a residence
permit. Those who are nationals of either the 15 older European Union countries, the 8 newer member
countries that joined the EU on May 1, 2004 or the European Economic Area, Monaco, Andorra and
Switzerland are not required to do so. Important: Nationals of Romania and Bulgaria (newest EU
countries) are still required to apply for a residence permit.
The
residence permit application
must be made at the prefecture
within two months of arrival
.
However, we strongly recommend that you start the procedure as soon as you arrive. You may be
asked to present proof that you have applied for a residence permit in order to successfully complete
the numerous other formalities that you will be faced with when settling in France.
If you live in Paris:
Your request for a residence permit will be filed by the representative
(
correspondant chercheur étranger
) from your host institution (the person at the host institution in
charge of relations with the Paris prefecture). You must give the representative all the papers required
for the residence permit application and complete the forms that the representative will give you.
If you live in the Ile-de-France region but outside of Paris:
You must go in person to your local
prefecture (see list below) with all the documents required, and complete the forms at the prefecture:
Documents required for a first residence permit application:
Passport
(photocopy of the pages bearing your personal details, the entry stamps and Scientist visa,
the expiration date and the original passport if you go to the prefecture in person)
3 passport photographs
(recent, full face, head uncovered, of good quality, in black and white or
colour, 3,5 cm x 4,5 cm)
If you are single: your
birth certificate
translated into French by an approved translator
If you are married: a French translation by an approved translator of the
livret de famille
(an official
family record book) or of the marriage certificate. If your spouse is already in France, a photocopy of
his/her residence permit.
a
proof of your residence
in Paris (such as a lease, an electricity or gas bill, a landter from the
person providing your accommodation and a photocopy of his/her identity card)
the original of the
convention
d’accueil
(make sure you keep a copy) stamped by the director of the
accredited research institution and the French consulate in your home country.
At the prefecture or with the correspondant-chercheur of your institution, you must complete the
following documents:
a form to request a medical examination
a
residency permit application
which you should sign on both sides
a
feuille de renseignements
(information sheet) which you must fill-out yourself and have
stamped by the host institution
