Master of Social Sciences in Applied Sociology

What is Applied Sociology?

Applied sociologists use a broad range of theoretical principles in sociology and sociological research methods to analyse and recommend solutions to various social problems and difficulties, be it individual or organizational, undergoing social changes. As sociological practitioners, their skills and training can be applied in a number of social settings and issues in the government, non-government and private sectors.

Applied sociologists are often called upon by these organizations to develop research projects and provide information with solutions that can be useful to their development.

Examples would be the conduct of opinion polls on public responses to policies and the tracking of the popularity for various kinds of interest groups; programme evaluations to assess the effectiveness of social service for welfare organizations for quality management and development; impact analysis of policies and plans for the government; consumer studies for business development and other problem-based studies in healthcare and education.

Programme Aims and Objectives

This unique programme provides education to equip students with theories and methods of Applied Sociology, with an emphasis on the application side. The programme aims to train social science practitioners with sound knowledge in the theory and practice of sociology to help people, organizations and communities develop innovative solutions, and to accomplish excellence in undertaking social research.

Programme Features

Six core courses which provide a solid foundation on sociology theories and social research methodologies.

Integrative Project: the programme provides a problem-based "Integrative Project". The purpose of the Project is to provide a practice opportunity to students with supervision to apply sociological theories, methods, skills and professional orientations, and ethics. The Project will focus on an actual problem or issue. Students may be placed in a practice site, such as commercial firms, public sector organizations, social services settings, and civil society organizations.

Students can select any two electives from a list of courses.

All students are admitted to the Master programme. If students are unable to complete the full Master level, they may be considered for the award of Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma, subject to the completion of at least 12 or 24 credits respectively, and the fulfillment of stipulated requirements.

Students can decide on their own study path, schedule and load for each semester in order to complete the programme in 2 to 5 years. Such flexible nature allows students to pace and plan their own study to best suit their personal and career development needs. With special arrangement, students might also be able to complete their studies within 1 year.
