Conference topic and goals

The Conference intends to deal with the topic of innovation inside businesses, convinced that this can be a keystone for vitalizing Italy’s production system.

Innovate, from the etymological standpoint, means altering the established order of things to do new things. In reality innovation is a change in the existing state of things in a move towards a better state.

We learn, from this linguistic analysis, that the term innovation is contained inside a set of synonyms such as change, alteration, mutation, reform, renewal, novelty, overturning, revolution.

It is evident that each of these terms has its own particular nuance to describe a specific situation.

However, it is also clear that innovation calls change directly in question. And change, in its turn, appears to be tied to the risk that arises the moment one confronts that which is new and, as such, little known. This is an aspect which, in more or less conscious state, sometimes hides behind a veil of habits and can generate no small degree of viscosity in the innovation process.

Innovation, thus, may remain on the outskirts of the business, above all if the organization still has performance levels that can confront, at least temporarily, the competition.

Consequently it is evident that the crisis, revealing signs of competitive weakness, offers a powerful stimulation for innovation precisely because it makes businesses face the need to find new paths to achieve desired goals with the resources at their disposal.

But in spite of this innovation is unable to spread when businesses assign all explanations for their market difficulties to a drop in demand.

Indeed recent research by Ipsos reveals and highlights this state of things and underlines the need for innovation in what our industrial system is offering.

From this perspective the 25th Annual Sinergie Conference intends to stimulate reflection and debate on innovative processes and business competitiveness with the goal of helping the Italian production system to overcome the state of crisis.

The Conference will collect theoretical contributions, reflections, empirical analyses and experiences written in Italian or English language.

Organization of Conference Proceedings

The Conference intends to explore the topic by alternating plenary and parallel sessions held on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th October 2013.

Plenary sessions will include the participation of keynote speakers of national and international importance, assisted by discussants.

Parallel sessions will present the selected papers proposed in Italian or English

languageby scholars, managers and professionals.

The parallel sessions will discuss innovation from various standpoints including: 1. the variety of meanings of the term “innovation” in business actions;

2. the factors that restraint or propel the innovation process;

3. the relationship between innovation and business delocalization-relocalization processes;

4. innovators and their relationship with the world of culture-creativity; the organization and territorial context where the business works;

5. Research and Development activities for technological innovation of products, production processes and systems;

6. brand innovation and communication strategies in their impact with evolving consumer models;

7. innovation in industry-distribution relationships; 8. the role of ICT in innovating business management; 9. new strategic alliances and new business models.

Paper submission

In order to submit a paper written in Italian or in English language to the 25th annual Sinergie Conference each author must send two separate files created using the Windows version of Microsoft Word:

- one author identification file entitled “IA” shall include only the title of the paper in both Italian and English, information related to the authors (qualification, scientific disciplinary sector, email) and assignment of paragraphs, acknowledgements and references to research projects that led to drawing up of the paper;

- another file, entitled “FP”, shall include the full paper (maximum length 7,500 words) including a structured abstract in Italian and English, each no longer than 250 words, key words and the bibliography. The layout of the abstract is as follows: goal of the paper, method, results, practical implications, limits to the research, originality of the work. Insertion of figures and tables in image format (.bmp; .jpeg; .jpg; .png; .gif) is not permitted but only in text format. Further files are to be attached in case of tables and figures, in their original format (for example: xls).

Footnotes are to be used only for comments, insights, further reflections and not for simple bibliographical references.

The paper will then undergo editorial inspection and the final result of the evaluation will then be notified.

Each author (at least one in case of several authors) undertakes to present the paper during the parallel sessions of the Conference under penalty of exclusion from insertion of the paper in the Referred Electronic Conference Proceedings.
