CAREER SERVICES

University of Pennsylvania

School of Engineering & Applied Science

Undergraduate Career Plans Survey Report 2011-2012

Overview

Each year Career Services surveys the SEAS graduating class to gather information about their post-graduation plans. This

report summarizes the responses from December 2011, May and August 2012 BSE and BAS degree recipients. The school

awarded 361 undergraduate degrees. Career Services received 336 responses, representing a 93% response rate. Of those

students reporting the date they received their offer, 91% were offered employment prior to graduation

.

The top industries in which graduates accepted positions continue to be manufacturing posting a 3% increase and technology

with a 4% increase over last year. Consulting and financial services also continue to be popular industries for our students,

however each saw a decrease in accepted positions: 1% less for consulting and 4% less for financial services.

The overall average salary of the employed respondents rose slightly to $69,234, and more than 100 students reported

receiving a sign-on bonus. As expected, engineers have the highest reported average starting salary of all

Bachelor’s level

students at Penn and a higher average salary than the national average for engineers. The average salary of Penn Engineering

majors (not including computer science related) was $66,229 compared to the national average of $60,639. Graduates in

computer related majors at Penn averaged $80,118 compared to the national average of $60,038 for graduates with computer

related degrees. The national averages are provided by the National Association of Colleges and Employers

, NACE Salary

Survey, September 2012 Executive Summary

.

Full-time employed engineers had an average of two job offers

and 62% accepted positions in the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast

regions, a 2% decrease over last year, reflecting their willingness to relocate for the position. The leading areas of study for

students going to graduate school were 73% in engineering (an 8% increase from last year), 17% in medicine, and 6% in the

sciences.

METHODOLOGY

Engineering students graduating with either a BAS or BSE degree in December 2011, May and August 2012 responded to several

email requests to complete the Career Plans Survey on line between April and November 2012. The SEAS Academic Programs office

sent an email to the graduating students asking them to complete the survey as part of the graduation process. A link was added to

the Engineering section of the Career Services website for any student in the Class of 2012 who was browsing the site. In November a

friendly request (email and phone) was sent to students who had not responded to earlier requests or who had previously indicated

they were still seeking employment or graduate school admission. A search of LinkedIn and the Penn Alumni on line directory was

accessed to search for any updated information from those who had not responded to all requests.
