Introduction
The National Ski Patrol -‐ Instructor Development Course is designed for the Patroller to gain the knowledge of the
educational process within the National Ski Patrol System. Successful completion of the Instructor Development
serves two purposes: 1. Prepare potential instructors to teach the various NSP courses. 2. Serve as a Senior Elective
for students working toward completion of the Senior Program.
http://www.nsp.org/EduPrograms/instructor.aspx
The NSP Instructor Development Program
The National Ski Patrol (NSP) doesn’t grow patrollers, it builds them. Each patroller learns his or her skills from a
certified NSP instructor. These hardworking instructors are the backbone of all NSP education programs; without
them, there would be no patrollers. The skills learned in the NSP Instructor Development Program (ID) focus on
principles of adult education that are applicable to any field. The ID course—a series of presentations, activities and
discussion opportunities—is available through a one-‐day class or via a CD-‐based e-‐course. Once completed,
instructor candidates move on to the Mentoring Program, an individually planned program administered under
guidance of a discipline-‐specific advisor, which preps them for certification as an NSP instructor. The NSP is always
seeking talented instructors to deliver its OEC, OET, MTR, Avalanche and ID programs. To learn more about
instructor development opportunities, contact your division ID supervisor or region coordinator.
Instructor Development Course
The ID course covers the various areas of instruction and how instructors can apply them to create a positive
learning experience for their students, and helps build a strong foundation of educational knowledge for use when
planning and delivering lessons. The general information covered in Instructor Development is applicable to all
potential NSP instructors, regardless of instructional specialty.

NATIONAL SKI PATROL SYSTEM EVENT/TRAINING RELEASE FORM
I agree I am voluntarily participating in this EVENT/TRAINING. I understand that the EVENT/TRAINING may involve extensive field work on first aid scenarios, skiing, and toboggan handling along with other activities which ski patrollers encounter in their duties of patrolling a ski area. I realize there are inherent risks in this type of activity including changing weather conditions, changing snow surface conditions, ice, bare spots, rocks, stumps, trees and the possibility of collisions with manmade and natural objects or other skiers and such activity can be dangerous and can result in serious injury or death. I knowingly assume the risk of participation and understand I can withdraw from this EVENT/TRAINING at any time. I understand that by participating in this EVENT/TRAINING I may also encounter additional risks not inherent to a normal participant to the sport of skiing. I agree to personally assume all of these risks. I also agree that I will rely solely on my own judgment regarding my personal safety and ability with regard to the terrain, circumstances and conditions in which I may be placed upon and asked to demonstrate or perform to accomplish the tasks involved in EVENT/TRAINING, and that I will decline to perform any activities if I believe I am placing myself in an unsafe situation or subject to possible injury or death if I proceeded.
As a requirement of this EVENT/TRAINING, I acknowledge that I agree to waive any right I might have to file a lawsuit for any injury or death resulting from my participation in this EVENT/TRAINING and I hereby remise, release, and forever discharge the ski area hosting the event, the National Ski Patrol System, Incorporated and its members, both individually and jointly, and I agree that no one else may file a lawsuit in my name related to my participation in this EVENT/TRAINING. If any part of this Release shall be determined to be unenforceable, all other parts shall be given full force and effect.

Course Paperwork
• NSP Event Training Release Form for each individual
• Course Completion Roster for the ID course – LEGIBLE – need to be able to read the information
• Senior Candidate Application Form -‐ for ID Instructor signature (some students are just taking the course for Senior Credit -‐
not intending to teach)
• Instructor Application Form with each discipline the student is interested in becoming an instructor for (ie, OEC, MTR, S&T,
etc) -‐ THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT one other than course completion sent to NSP.
• Southern Division ID Observation Form – This is completed for each student in the course for each topic they taught and they
are returned to me. -‐ NOTE -‐ some students may require more than two evaluations.
• Course Evaluation Form from each student for the class
• If the student was ONLY taking the course for a Senior Elective – (I need to know that AND the student will need the form
attached for the Senior Program)
• Completed Instructor Activity Report -‐ this records who taught which section -‐ with course schedule attached.
• Once the course is completed and the students are ready to be mentored -‐ I will take the scanned (or mailed to me forms) and
send copies the Division Program Supervisor (DPS) for mentor placement. Once the DPS assigns the mentors and THAT phase is complete -‐ that DPS will recommend that student for Instructor Status.
• I prefer hard copies mailed to me -‐ however they can be scan (provided they are legible to me) ... this way I can forward the
copies needed to the DPS. As soon as I receive the paperwork from you I will forward to the DPS as soon as possible. Keep a copy for your files!
This is not a new paperwork process– I inherited the paperwork and now I am keeping electronic copies.

Program Goals
Senior Program OEC module
The Senior Program OEC module consists of field-relevant exercises to develop skills in the objectives of decision making, problem
management, and leadership. Further information on this module can be found in the OEC Senior Training Coordinators guide which is posted on the Member's website
Senior Alpine (skiing/snowboarding)
The Senior Alpine (skiing/snowboarding) component consists of long-, medium- and short-radius turns, skiing/snowboarding unpacked snow or icy conditions, and equipment carry exercises that require edging, weight transfer, and upper and lower body movements. The objective is to help Patrollers become better alpine skiers/snowboarders and toboggan handlers.
Senior Alpine Toboggan Handing
The Senior Alpine toboggan handling component covers the
mechanics and components of various rescue toboggans as well as the operation of loaded and unloaded toboggans from the front and the tail in a variety of conditions on more difficult and most difficult slopes. Toboggan handling criteria will vary with the multiplicity of equipment used across the country and the differences between alpine and Nordic techniques.
Aid Room Management Module
The aid room management module is a core component for Senior Patroller. As of this printing, this module was under further
development.
Senior Nordic
The Senior Nordic component consists of on-snow exercises to develop leadership abilities while increasing and enhancing skiing proficiency, Nordic toboggan handling, and related Nordic skills.
Continuing Education
Senior Alpine or Nordic
To maintain Senior Alpine or Nordic classification, patrollers must complete national or Division authorized clinics once every three years. Patrollers will be given performance feedback during these clinics. Participation in these clinics fulfills the requirement; participants do not need to meet a performance standard.
Senior Patroller
To maintain the Senior Patroller classification, Senior Patrollers are required to meet the continuing education requirement once every three years by retaking the aid room module or serving as an evaluator,
advocate, or trainer for this module at least once every three years.
