It can be said, with a great deal of certainty, that these simple pieces of paper are, indeed, the greatest assets a company can own. With this in mind, the role of the oil and gas personnel who oversee and manage these simple pieces of paper becomes paramount for the success of the oil and gas company. These people have been hired not as data input personnel but rather as the guardians of the company assets. Their responsibility goes far beyond shuffling paper and capturing information into a computer system. Their job is as an analyst, overseer, maintainer, and guardian of these assets. For the company to realize its maximum success those who oversee the leases must also succeed.

Before a company can begin drilling for oil or gas, they need to own the rights to the oil and/or minerals owned by the mineral owners. Field landmen are the ones who bridge the gap between the oil companies and the landowners. While landmen are sometimes hired by energy companies, they more commonly work as independent contractors for brokers, who hire them to perform the services required before any drilling can commence. These services might include a determination of land and mineral ownership, the procurement and negotiations of land and mineral leases, curing land titles, an examination of surface issues, due diligence projects, and/or contract negotiations.

Introduction to Retail Management: This lesson
provides an overview of all the ways this dynamic field contributes to a healthy economy and provides consumer access to products. The environmental factors that shape retailing and cause it to constantly evolve are also covered.
Building Customer Relations: Retailers are the bridge
between producers and consumers, and retail managers are responsible for building strong customer relationships. With a foundation in understanding consumer behavior, you learn key steps to building and maintaining customer loyalty.
Serving the Customer: A retail manager must be able to
address customer needs in order to provide stellar customer service, and this involves more than just stocking the shelf with merchandise. Special attention is given to handling customer requests and complaints in ways that will build loyalty to the store.
Hiring and Evaluating Employees: This lesson gives the
retail manager an insight into two very important human resources topics: 1) how to hire the best people, and 2) how to evaluate their performance.
Understanding Performance Metrics: Financial
statements and performance metrics are important management tools. When correctly prepared and properly interpreted, they contribute to an understanding of the current financial condition, problems and possibilities of a company. This lesson will take you through the basics of finance for non-financial managers, to help you become familiar with the terminology and what it means.

Budgeting, Forecasting, and Trends: Every business
must have a business plan in order to be successful. Budgeting, forecasting, and past and current trends are a very important part of the business plan. This lesson will explain how to interpret information and determine needs in order to develop a good business plan.
Merchandising: Retail merchandise planning is the process
involved in developing the proper assortment of goods and services for the retail store in order to fulfill the needs of the target market. Topics include the elements of merchandising planning, the essentials for building good displays, impulse merchandising and pricing.
Risk Management: One of the most important aspects in
any retail business is risk management. Risk management is an umbrella term covering all types of risks (e.g., theft, property damage, interruption of business and those risks associated with employees on the job) and how they can be mitigated or avoided.
Suppliers and Distribution Centers: Maintaining proper
levels of inventory are essential for retail business, and both suppliers and distribution centers are critical elements of this process. This lesson focuses on how to work with suppliers and distribution centers, including common problems and how to minimize them.
Employment Laws: This lesson examines methods for
motivating employees such as goal setting, compensation and training. It also explains important employment laws that are essential for every manager to know and understand, including the Civil Rights Act, Equal Pay Act, Age Discrimination Act, OSHA and more.
Leadership: A manager's primary job is to accomplish tasks
through employees. To drive employees to perform to the best of their abilities, the manager must understand human motivation. This lesson covers the basics of what a leader is and compares different leadership styles. Communication skills are covered, as well as decision making and team building - all of which prepare the manager to lead.
Ethics and Social Responsibility: In this lesson, students
are prompted to consider the role of ethics in retailing. Topics include an overview of business ethics, how a retail organization's culture impacts ethics and the law, the responsibility of retail business to employees, environment, community, customers and stakeholders, and why good people sometimes display unethical behavior and who is at risk.
