I. INTRODUCTION
Roll-over behaviour of a tractor with a front mounted roll-over protective structure
A programme is available for testing whether a narrow tractor with a front mounted structure complies with the “OECD standard code for the official testing of front mounted roll-over protective structures on narrow-track wheeled agricultural and forestry tractors (Code 6 – February 2002).
The programme is available online at the following address:
http://www.cfnavarra.es/insl/doc/tractores/Estrema2/IntroduccionTractorEstrecho.doc. The programme was developed by:
Agrarian Mechanization Group in the Navarre State University (Universidad Pública de
Navarra) directed by: Carmen Jarén Ceballos
with the collaboration of: Francisco Javier Otazu Vidart; Pedro Arnal Atarés; José Ignacio Arana Navarro; Silvia Arazuri Garín
in collaboration with the Navarre Occupational Safety Institute (Instituto Navarro de Salud
Laboral): Carmelo Pérez de Larraya Sagüés; Javier Eransus Izquierdo
It is presented in the form of calculation software preceded by brief instructions which must be read first. To load the software, you must right click on your mouse and copy rollover.xls to the hard disk.
Section 3.1.1 of the “OECD standard code for the official testing of front mounted roll-over protective structures on narrow-track wheeled agricultural and forestry tractors (Code 6 – February 2002) states that the protective structure may only be subjected to the strength tests if both the Lateral Stability Test and the Non-Continuous Rolling Test have been satisfactorily completed.
The non-continuous rolling test is intended to check whether a structure fitted to the tractor for the protection of the driver can satisfactorily prevent continuous roll-over of the tractor in the event of its overturning laterally on a slope with a gradient of 1 in 1.5.
Evidence of non-continuous rolling can be provided by one of the following two methods:
− Demonstration of the characteristics that prevent continuous lateral rolling by means of a lateral overturning test,
1. ground clearance of not more than 600 mm beneath the lowest points of the front and rear axles, allowing for the differential;
2. fixed or adjustable minimum track width with one of the axles less than 1 150 mm fitted with tyres of a larger size. It is assumed that the axle mounted with the wider tyres is set at a track width of not more than 1 150 mm. It must be possible to set the track width of the other axle in such a way that the outer edges of the narrower tyres do not go beyond the outer edges of the tyres of the other axle. Where the two axles are fitted with rims and tyres of the same size, the fixed or adjustable track width of the two axles must be less than 1 150 mm;
3. mass greater than 600 but less than 3 000 kg, corresponding to the unladen weight of the tractor, including the roll-over protective structure and tyres of the largest size recommended by the manufacturer;
4. and being fitted with roll-over protective structures of the dual-pillar type mounted in front of the driver’s seat and characterised by a reduced zone of clearance attributable to the tractor silhouette, thus rendering it inadvisable, under any circumstances, to impede access to the driving position but worthwhile retaining these structures (fold-down or not) in view of their undoubted ease of use.
Thus, where a protective structure must be fitted, the tractor data required by the programme and the distance to the centre of gravity, height and width of the protective structure are entered. Based on this data, the tractor will be tested to determine whether it rolls or not. If it rolls, the data for the protective structure will have to be adjusted until the result is negative.
IF YOU INTEND TO USE THE PROGRAMME FOR REAL TESTING, PLEASE CONTACT US AT THE FOLLOWING EMAIL ADDRESS [email protected] TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON ITS SCOPE IN PRACTICE. THANK YOU

II. CONCISE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE PROGRAMME WORKSHEET
(ROLLOVER.XLS)
Programme start-up
Rollover.xls is a Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheet which contains linked executable macros. When the file is opened, depending on the level of macro protection, the following dialogue screen may appear:
Microsoft Excel X
The workbook you are opening contains macros.
Some macros may contain viruses which can harm your computer. If you are sure that the workbook comes from a secure
source, click on “enable macros”. If it is not secure and you do not want to execute macros, click on “Disable macros”
5 Always ask before opening a workbook with macros
Disable macros Enable macros Cancel
To operate the programme, you must click on Enable macros
It is useful to have a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels or more. Otherwise, you will need to use the scroll bars to run the programme, since the workspace will not fit into a screen (you will not see the whole workspace at the same time).

Executing the programme
Once the input data has been entered (dimensions of the tractor and the protective structure to be tested), click Test. The results will be displayed in the bottom right of the workspace.
Then Delete data button allows you to start a new test. However, after a test has been performed, you can change any of the input data, leaving the remainder unchanged. By clicking on Test, new results are obtained (it is not necessary to delete all the input data to perform another test).
Saving the results
After a test has been performed, you can keep the data (input data and results) for the test and consult it later. To do this, you introduce a label which identifies the test (Name of test) and click on the Save test button. To access data saved in subsequent session using the programme, you must execute the command File, Save in Microsoft® Excel® .
To access data in the saved tests, click on the Load test button …. A list of the saved tests will appear. Choose the item that you want to display from the list and press the Enter key (or double click) so that the data for the selected test is loaded into the workspace. By pressing the Del key, you can delete an item from the list. By clicking on the buttons on the right of the list, you can change the order of the items in the list.
