Overall Purpose of Role :

The BI & Data Manager is responsible for all activity (project and non-project) involved in the development and support of CUK Business Intelligence (BI) solutions (both data warehouse and end user access tools) as well as the underpinning Enterprise Data Platform.

The BI & Data Manager will be working with the BI Architect, BI Project Manager(s), other Project Managers where there are BI requirements, BI & Data team members and other stakeholders, in the discovery, development and implementation of BI solutions to meet identified business needs. The role also involves leading, acquiring and utilising the appropriate resources necessary to conduct the development and support to agreed timescalse and service levels.

The BI & Data Manager will be responsible for:

day-to-day operational aspects of the existing BI and Data Platform landscape projects to add more BI capability

delivery of BI capabilities in support of other IT projects

The BI and Data Manager will apply CUK Project Development methodology and enforce defined project standards. They will ensure project plans and project documentation is complete, up-to-date, and provide regular project status updates to management, the project team and project stakeholders throughout the life of projects. They will ensure that the BI standards, definitions and quality requirements defined by BI Governance are met by all BI solutions. They must have excellent knowledge and understanding of

RDBMS/normalised data, Data Warehousing/denormalised data, tools and techniques for BI development and BI end user tools.

The BI & Data Manager will: conduct regular reviews of project and non-project work to minimise exposure to risk and ensure quality objectives are achieved; manage project budgets, tracking time spent by individuals against project plan, ensuring optimum cost and maximum staff utilisation to deliver assigned projects on time, quality and budget;

balance project demands against supporting the existing BI solutions; use tools and structured techniques to deliver project plans, showing all project activities, dependencies, resources, and risks; implement project management methodologies covering the project life cycle, project objectives, critical success factors and support of the Business Case.

Main Activities and Responsibilities The BI & Data Manager is directly responsible for: Management

Ensuring a BI & Data team with appropriate skills/experience is developed and grown. Providing effective leadership to the BI & Data team ensuring that team members are motivated and stretched. Managing the allocation of BI & Data resources effectively. Providing leadership and direction to Project Managers involved in delivering major BI Initiatives, as well as undertaking Project Management of some of the BI Initiatives. Representing the BI & Data team, including at BI Governance / Steering groups, ensuring that effective relationships are built with the Business and around IT.

Working with the BI Architect, BI Project Managers, and other senior members of IT to articulate and follow a BI vision/roadmap, demonstrating how and in what order major Business demands can/should be accommodated (including what should not be

accommodated, and why).

Publishing, managing and driving the operational plan for the BI & Data team.

Participating in Vendor/Product evaluation/selection for tools and technologies related to BI / Data

Challenging Business BI demand for value and benefit and contribute to the creation of robust Business Cases

Supporting the definition of end to end Data & BI project scope, goals, deliverables, timescales, resource requirements

Providing estimated development costs and timescales for input to business cases and plans

Ensuring appropriate resources are available to support the project

Ensuring project and operational plans are communicated to all project stakeholders together with their individual responsibilities, and progress appropriately reported. Project

Managing project budgets, resource allocation and utilisation. Providing direction and support to project teams

Providing technical resources to projects to produce functional specifications and solutions design/ development

Reviewing project documentation and ensuring appropriate sign-off

Ensuring project plans are maintained that support the end-to-end project delivery. Tracking project deliverables against timeline and quality objectives. Monitoring and reporting on progress of the project to Project Boards and all stakeholders, highlighting project risks

Managing project risks and change control, communicating any impact to the project Ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget and to quality standards using agreed methodology. Supporting the project quality and testing strategy. Resolution of project issues and scope management

Ensuring effective transition from Project Delivery to Service Delivery.

Following CUK ITIL-based processes for 2nd and 3rd line Incident Management and Problem Management

Ensuring high quality BI Service Delivery to existing customers/users. Providing support to resolve technical issues with live BI services Prioritisation and development of assigned Development Requests Recommending changes to improve system performance and reliability Ensuring projects are formally closed off

Conducting post implementation reviews and identifying any lessons learned General Responsibilities

Adheres to corporate policies and procedures, including code of conduct, security and audit procedures and any control related responsibility for financial and personal data entered, stored, or reported via business systems within employees control (list not exhaustive).

Undertake ad hoc duties as required

Other Features of Job (travel, hours of work, working conditions etc): Main place of work will be CUK Southampton Office

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Training

Preferably Degree qualified in appropriate discipline Experience

Extensive experience managing Business Intelligence / Data Warehousing AND extensive experience managing RDBMS platform(s)

Extensive experience in managing projects and outsourced contracts, working in a structured Project Management framework

Good understanding of all stages of Data Warehouse project lifecycle and development methodologies

Good understanding of the capabilities of OLAP Cubes, BI access tools (in particular BOXi), ETL tools (in particular SSIS)

Development of IT or BI strategies to support changing needs of the business People management and team leadership
