Frequently Asked Questions for 8

th

Grade Students

Question: Do I need a world (foreign) language to graduate from high school? When should I take a world language?

Answer: You do not need a world language to graduate form high school. However, if you wish to attend a 4 year university you need at least two consecutive years of the same language. Some colleges may require more.

We generally recommend most students begin world language study in 10th grade. However, you may begin in 9th. Students who are successful in 8th grade English can be successful in world language in 9th grade. Remember, taking a world language as an elective is adding another class that requires considerable studying.

Question: May I take ceramics as a freshman?

Answer: Ceramics is a popular class that is usually filled with upper classmen. It is generally not available to freshmen.

Question: Can I be a teacher's (clerical) assistant.

Answer: No, clerical assistant positions are reserved for upperclassmen.

Question: What is work experience? Can I get credit?

Answer: Our district no longer offers or gives work experience credit.

Question: Can I have a late arrival or early release?

Answer: No, only seniors in good standing for graduation are allowed to have either a late arrival or early release.

Question: I want to take choir. Which one should I sign up for?

Answer: Symphonic choir.

Question: I want to be in band. Which one should I sign up for?

Answer: Concert band.

Question: I want to be in honor's classes. How do I get in?

Answer: Honor's placements are determined by test scores and teacher recommendation. Your 8th grade teachers should have told you if you are recommended. Generally, if you are in the honors Math class you are in the honors Physical Science class in high school. If you are unsure, sign up for the regular class, ask your 8th grade teacher and get back to the school with the change.

Question: Should I take physical science or principles of technology?

Answer: Both count for your 9th grade science requirement. If your career pathway is engineering or applied science, principles of technology may be of interest to you. You may take both Physical Science and Principle of Technology if you are interested in both.

Question: Can I waive PE?

Answer: Yes. The two most used reasons are you turn out and finish a sport or have a doctor’s excuse. For example, if you turn out for football, basketball and baseball your freshman year you could waive three semesters of PE (four are required) You receive NO CREDIT for playing a sport.

(13)

Answer: Running start is a program where you can take college classes at LCC during your Junior and Senior years and receive both high school and college credit. The state pays your tuition at LCC while you pay for any books and transportation. Another thing to consider, you cannot get a Quality Work from LCC. See your counselor for further questions.

Question: If I sign up for a class at R.A Long how do I get there?

Answer: A shuttle bus picks you up in front of our school approximately 7 minutes before the next period starts. You should inform your teacher that you have a class at R.A. Long and they will let you out early to catch the bus.
