About the Conference
To register for the 2012 Georgia ACC Cardiac Care
Conference, complete the enclosed registration form
and mail it along with the appropriate payment to the
GA/ACC office 4850 Golden Parkway, Suite B 418,
Buford, GA 30518. The conference registration desk
will be open from 12:00 noon - 6:30pm. Friday. The
program will begin promptly at 12:45pm until 6:30pm
followed by the welcome reception and dinner. On
Saturday, the registration desk will reopen at 7:00am
with breakfast and exhibits followed by the program
from 8:00 – 1:30pm.
All registrants will need to provide their member or
non member ID# and their email address to receive
their online evaluation and to claim their CNE credits.
*Non Members will be assigned an ID# in order to
access the online evaluation. **Members will use their
existing ID# at ACC to access the online evaluation.
You will provide this information to us on the
registration form.

About the Conference
Welcome
The Georgia Chapter of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) would like to welcome you to the first annual
Georgia conference for Cardiac Care Associates (CCA). Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of
death and is a major cause of disability in the United States. This meeting reflects our dedication to reducing
cardiovascular risk and improving patient outcomes. Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse
Specialists, Physician Assistants, and Clinical Pharmacists should attend this conference in order enhance their
knowledge, fine tune assessment skills, and network with colleagues at the reception and dinner. At this meeting,
you will have the opportunity to learn more about the latest research and clinical guideline updates in cardiovascular
medicine and apply this information to your own clinical practice. If you are not yet a member of the ACC, this

Carolyn Brown, RN, MN, CCRN, CNS
Ms. Brown is a clinical specialist in cardiology at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, where she acts as an expert resource for clinical, educational and quality care issues. Carolyn has been a practicing nurse since 1978 and has extensive experience working in the ICU/CCU, Oncology, and Cardiovascular units. Carolyn has many years of clinical teaching experience, including as an instructor at the LSUMC School of Nursing, where she focused on care of the adult in the critical care setting. She is certified by the American Association of Critical Care Nursing as a Critical Care Registered Nurse.
Carolyn is an adjunct faculty at the Nell Hodgson School of Nursing at Emory University and lectures on topics of pharmacology, coronary artery disease, pathophysiology of heart disease, 12 Lead, women and heart disease and heart failure. She teaches IV and central line care for nursing orientation at Emory healthcare and is on the CLABI prevention team at Emory Healthcare.
Carolyn is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Heart Association, National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, and is the current president of Atlanta Chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. She is the entity leader for falls prevention at Emory University Hospital and also serves as a member of many committees including the Emory Health Care Education, Code MET and Resuscitation Medication Reconciliation, Weight-Based Heparin and Anticoagulation Team and Basic Dysrhythmia Course Planning Committee, among others. Carolyn has been an invited speaker at more than 50 presentations and seminars. She has published in the areas of nursing pharmacology, heart failure, elder care, cardiac issues and is a writer/reviewer for Pritchett & Hull and Staywell Publishing.

Ms. Brown earned a Master of Nursing degree, with a focus on adult health, curriculum and instruction, from Louisiana State University Medical Center School of Nursing in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Allen Dollar, MD, FACC, FACP
Dr. Dollar is assistant professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at Emory University School of Medicine and chief of Cardiology and medical director Cardiovascular Services at Grady Memorial Hospital. He received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University, his medical degree from University of Maryland. He interned at University of Maryland Hospital, conducted his residency at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. He was a senior staff fellow in Cardiac Pathology at the National Institute of Health and conducted his cardiology fellowship in Washington at Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Brown has received two Excellence in Teaching awards from Emory University Hospital, the
Nanette K. Wenger Distinguished Service Award, Atlanta Business Chronicle Health Care Hero Award, Channel 11 WXIA Community Service Award, Piedmont Hospital Nicholas E. Davies Community Service Award and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

Leslie Dotson Jaggers, Pharm.D., BCPS
Dr. Jaggers is the cardiovascular clinical pharmacist at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, GA where she has practiced for the last 13 years. Prior to joining Piedmont, she was with The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists where her responsibilities included coordinating development of evidence-based guidelines in various therapeutic areas. She also practiced for 5 years as clinical supervisor for Adult Medicine at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida where she was also adjunct clinical associate professor with the UF College of Pharmacy. Leslie obtained her BS and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Georgia and completed a two-year clinical pharmacy residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. She obtained board certification as a pharmacotherapy specialist in 1996.
In her current role, Dr. Jaggers is extensively involved in evidence-based drug policy and protocol development for cardiovascular services with a significant focus on the clinical use of antithrombotic therapy. Other experiences include implementation and management of an outpatient anticoagulation management service. She is the pharmacist team member of a comprehensive heart failure disease management program and is currently involved in preparations to initiate Piedmont’s heart transplant program.

• Discuss the pharmacology of antiplatelet agents.
Narendra Kanuru, MD
Dr. Kanuru attended both college and medical school at the University of Miami and graduated from the six-year combined bachelor's/medical degree program in 1994. During that period, he spent one year at the University of Tuebingen in Germany as a Foreign Studies Scholar. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory University. Following a cardiology fellowship at the University of Tennessee, he returned to Atlanta and completed a two-year cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at Emory University in 2002.
Dr. Kanuru is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. He is a member of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (NASPE). He joined Cardiovascular Medicine in July 2002, and is fully trained in all aspects of invasive electrophysiology, including biventricular pacemakers/ICDs, complex arrhythmia management and ablation, transseptal catheterization, and transvenous lead extraction. He is currently on staff at WellStar Cobb, Douglas, Kennestone, and Paulding hospitals.
Atrial Arrhythmias: Medical Management, Intervention, and Anti-coagulation
• Review atrial arrhythmias and discuss various treatment options available, including rate control, rhythm management, and anti-coagulation.
Michael E. McConnell, MD, FACC, FAAP
Dr. McConnell is a graduate of Duke University, where he studied biomedical engineering. He then attended the University of Alabama Birmingham for medical school, and did his residency at the Children's Hospital of Alabama. He did his cardiology fellowship in Cincinnati Ohio, and has been on the faculty of UAB, East Carolina University and Emory University School of Medicine. He started using telemedicine in the 1990's, while working at ECU, and has done research and published articles concerning the efficacy of pediatric cardiology evaluations via telemedicine. He is also the recipient of several medical school teaching awards and is a member of AOA, the medical honor society. He is currently the medical director of telemedicine for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
Murmur Assessment
• Compare and contrast various heart sounds in both the pediatric and adult patient population and practice appropriately identifying sound, as well as describing quality and character of murmur.
Adult Congenital Heart Disease
• Establish current ACC/AHA guidelines for management of ACHD.
Nirav Raval, MD, FACC
Dr. Raval is Medical Director of Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Director of Critical Care, Piedmont Heart Institute and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, Georgia Health Science University. Dr. Nirav Raval, a cardiovascular specialist in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation. His expertise includes post-operative and medical management of cardiac transplantation and left ventricular assist device implantation. Optimal medical therapy of heart failure, as well as, device therapy such as cardiac resynchronization (biventricular pacemakers and defibrillators) is also a specialty of Dr. Raval.
Dr. Raval graduated from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in the top 10 percent of his graduating class. Additionally, he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, a prestigious medical honor society. A native of Ohio, Dr. Raval is a summa cum laude graduate of Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. He completed his Internal Medicine and Residency programs at Barnes Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis, MO. At Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, he completed two fellowships: Cardiovascular Disease and Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation. Additionally, as a fellow, he initiated several research projects in the field of congestive heart failure and gained clinical and work experience in nuclear cardiology. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and Nuclear Cardiology by the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC). Dr. Raval has also been inducted into the American College of Cardiology as a Fellow.
Dr. Raval has a driving interest in cardiovascular research and has participated in trials ranging from pharmaceutical trials to "first-in-man" device trials. His seamless integration of clinical research into clinical practice offers his patients options beyond the current guidelines.
Role of Mechanical Devices in Heart Failure Management
• Identify selection criteria for patients for whom device-based therapy for heart failure and primary prevention of sudden cardiac death would be beneficial, taking into consideration their needs when surgery is involved.
Arthur Reitman, MD, FACC
A native of New Orleans, Dr. Reitman is a board certified cardiologist who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Washington University in St. Louis in 1991. He earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University, New Orleans, in 1995. After completing his internal medicine internship and residency at Tufts Affiliated Hospitals, he went on to a Cardiovascular Disease fellowship at Brown University, Providence, R.I.
Dr. Reitman completed an Interventional Fellowship at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City in 2002 and is board certified in Interventional cardiology.
Special interests include complex coronary atherosclerotic disease, including atherectomy devices, novel antiplatelet therapeutics, and nuclear cardiology. Dr. Reitman is currently on staff at WellStar Cobb, Douglas, Kennestone and Paulding Hospitals. He currently serves as the medical director of the Catheterization Labs at WellStar Kennestone and Cobb Hospitals.
Valvular Lesions: Indications, Imaging, and Catheter Interventions
• Discuss the latest available therapies for aortic valve disease and appropriately refer patients for these treatments.
Need Statement:
The practice of clinical cardiology is evolving rapidly. Managing the needs of the cardiovascular patient has
become increasingly complex. Utilizing the guidelines for the management and treatment of the CV patient
is prominent in maintaining the highest quality of patient care.
Goal Statement:
The overall goal of the activity is to improve patient care by increasing learner competence in the promotion
of quality cardiovascular care, as well as improving performance in using appropriate guidelines-based
treatment and management options including adult congenital heart disease, percutaneous coronary
interven-tion, mechanical devices and heart failure management, and atrial arrythmias.
Educational Design
CCA members will participate in didactic lectures as well as interactive workshops to enhance their scientific
knowledge and assessment skills.
Target Audience:
The target audience for this course is Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists,
Physician Assistants and Pharmacists that are based in a hospital or private practice. It is for the beginner,
intermediate or advanced individual.
Credit Statement:
The American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing
education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
The ACCF designates this educational activity for a maximum of 10.25 continuing education hours.
Requirements for successful completion are attendance in a session in its entirety and completing the
evaluation tool.
While offering credits noted above, this program is not intended to provide extensive training or certification
in the field.
