 Definition

“Voice” is a characteristic of verbs which indicates the relation of the verb’s action to its subject. In other word, voice is the form a verb takes to indicate whether the subject of the verb performs or receives the action. The voice of verb shows whether the sentence is active or passive.

 Active and Passive ACTIVE VOICES:

Active voice verbs are used when an action is performed by the subject. The active voice is used in making a straight forward statement about an action, i.e. the “doer” of the action is the subject of the sentence.

PASSIVE VOICES:

Passive voice verbs are used in a sentence if an action was performed on the subject. In the passive voice, the “doer” of the action is not important, therefore, in a passive sentence the subject is often omitted.

The example of the passive voice

o Passive: The sulphuric acid was poured into a beaker o Active: I poured the sulphuric acid into a beaker

o Passive: The organic of chemistry journal was posted by Friska on blogger yesterday o Active: Friska posted the organic of chemistry journal on blogger yesterday

o Passive: The book won’t have been covered by Annisa o Active: Annisa will not have been cover the book

 When to use the passive voice

1. what happened is more important than who did it:

The sulphuric acid was poured into a beaker. The action is vital, not who did it, so the subject is missing.

2. the writer wants to create some suspense:

The Reverend Green was killed in the library with a gun by Miss Plum. Readers want to know the name of the murderer, but using the passive voice makes them wait longer…

3. To write something in a scientific genre. Passive Voice is often preferred in lab reports and

scientific research papers.

The sodium hydroxide was dissloved in water. This solution was then titrated with hydrochloric acid.
