Randall Clayton 5th-8th grade

Numerous studies have shown positive links between board games and their ability to enhance learning. The development of the first kindergarten in Germany by Friedrich Froebel was based on the concept of integrating learning with play and games. The game of chess was used during the Middle Ages to teach noblemen how to strategize for battle. The hobby board game industry has seen an enormous rise in popularity in the last decade. As a result, the board games most people have associated with the hobby for many years, i.e. Monopoly, Risk, Trivial Pursuit, etc. are being replaced by a selection of games with a wider variety of themes, game mechanics, and most importantly fun factor. This class will use modern board games (and some classic board games) to enhance learning for the student. Board games will be used to develop and enhance a variety of skills, including collaboration and teamwork, creative development (in thinking and writing), logic and deduction, communication and social interaction, and strategic thinking. Each week, brief in-class discussions and activities will supplement playing board games. While most of the student’s formal class work will take place during class time, there will be a minimal amount of homework required (primarily reading and writing assignments). Game-related ac-tivities (both at-home and in-class) may include, for example, writing reviews of games played, learning a new game and teaching it to the rest of the class, working together as a team in a cooperative game setting, and certain elements of board game design. While the emphasis of the class will be on learning, the students won’t even realize they’re learning because they’ll be having so much fun. No fee will be required for the class. All games used during the class will be provided by the instructor.
