Pastor's Message

As the semester wound to a close and

spring commencement approached, there was

a frequent question heard among staff and

students at York College: “Do you have plans

for summer?”

It is a good question. As temperatures

warm up and nature springs to life the amount

of human activity also increases. Even if our

jobs don’t change for the summer, the season

will bring us opportunities that are not available

or desirable in winter. Many people make

plans for vacations, reunions, and weddings

during the summer. Chances are we are

planning to get some extra things done

outside. Other summer extras may include

local ball games, time on the lake, and maybe

even a few extra days off thrown into the mix.

Summer increases our activity and that’s a

good thing.

When Jesus gave the Great

Commission and sent the Holy Spirit he stirred

His early followers to action and they

responded with tremendous energy and

enthusiasm. Fast forward to 2015 and Jesus is

still in the business of calling us to action. As

we seek to serve Him we need the energy of

summer but too often we have the cold and

dreary attitude of winter.

As we experience the summer season

let us use it as incentive to rededicate

ourselves to the enthusiastic service of our

Lord. How?

1. Come to worship. We worship all year

long. 9:15 a.m. on Sunday morning. Be

there. And bring a friend, too!

2. Read the Bible. Choose a cool spot in

the house or a sunny spot on the lawn

or the beach and read a couple of

chapters a day. Maybe choose a book

you’ve never read, or plan to re-read an

old favorite. Either way, dig in.

3. Renew your prayer life. Whether it be

contemplative meditation, active

intercession for others, or a form you’ve

never tried before, set aside time to

converse with God. And don’t forget to

listen for his response!

4. Get involved. Help with Vacation Bible

School. Make Chrismons for the

Christmas tree with the Recycled

Teenagers. Volunteer at Food Pantry or

Clothing Bank. Find a way to volunteer

your time, in the church or in the

community (or maybe both!). Serve in

Jesus’ name.

These are just a few ways of using the

extra time and energy the summer brings to

rededicate yourself to the Lord and his

service. Give it a try. You’ll be glad you did!

“Serve the Lord with gladness: come before

his presence with singing.” Psalm 100:2

Peace,

Pastor Lisa

Also a big thank you goes out to Karen Drawbaugh and Betty Mitchell for all their hard work in organizing the event. Gary Lehr, who

arranged a significant monetary donation from Thrivent for the event, through the "Thrivent Action Team" program, also deserves a great big thank you.

THRIVENT MEMBERS:

Thrivent Financial has recently initiated a program named “Thrivent Action Teams”,

designed to promote giving, educational and service activities. The program provides “seed” money to help

offset the costs associated with sponsoring events to benefit individuals in need, service groups and the

community. Our recent Kids Penny Fair, thanks to Gary Lehr, used “Thrivent Action Team” funds to help raise

over $200 for our Community Vacation Bible School program. If you are a Thrivent member and are interested

in helping St. Jacob’s offset costs used to sponsor community events, or if you just want to learn more about

the program, please contact Gary Lehr.
