Zone 34 Rotarians Celebrate and Contemplate Peace

To celebrate Rotary International’s 108th birthday, about 200 Rotarians from Zone 34 - from as far away as the Caribbean and as close as the Atlanta West End Rotary Club gathered near the Atlanta, Georgia airport on Saturday, February, for Zone 34’s Peace Symposium. Director Anne Matthews encouraged us all to think about what peace meant to us - and our speakers

challenged us to think big about how partnerships could increase our impact on the world, to think about the world we want to leave our grandchildren, and to instill the concepts of peace and understanding in our communities. And, Abidemi Fasanmi of Nigeria, a Hubert Humphrey Fellow at the Rollins University of Public Health, Emory University - spoke of what peace meant to the women and children of her country - in terms of health, education, freedom and opportunity.

We all sang Happy Birthday to Rotary and closed by singing Let There Be Peace on Earth. A Peace Pole will be planted on the Clayton State University campus near Atlanta to signify our day of celebration - and our belief that peace is possible. The picture above is from a You Tube video you can view as a friend of Rotary Zone 34 on Facebook - and don’t miss the poems on page 4.

Dear Friends,

My wife Naomi and I had the privilege to serve as members of the RI Training Team at International Assembly in San Diego last month; I was a Training Leader working with the DGEs from around the world and Naomi was a DGE Spouse Training Facilitator. This was the second consecutive year that we had the honor to serve RI as trainers at International Assembly, and it was a phenomenal experience each year. It was so exciting to witness the universal excitement and enthusiasm of the DGEs when RIPE Ron Burton revealed for the first time the RI theme for 2013-2014: Engage Rotary, Change Lives. All of the DGEs that I had an opportunity to interact with – and it was a very large number – feel positive about this theme, and are already envisioning ways that it can help them to motivate Rotarians in their respective districts to be more actively involved in Rotary and The Rotary Foundation.

At this time of the Rotary Year, most districts are gearing up for Leadership Team Training meetings, PETS, District Assemblies and other Rotary gatherings. It is an exciting time of the year, when current DGs are working toward the completion of the goals they set for their year as governor, and DGEs and the incoming district leadership teams are actively preparing for the challenges and opportunities of the upcoming Rotary Year. I encourage all Rotary Leaders throughout Zone 34 to keep The Rotary Foundation among the top of lists for goals and activities – both in finalizing achievements of the Peace Through Service year and in setting plans in motion for the Engage Rotary, Change Lives year.

Incoming RRFC Kenan Kern is working with RC Marcy Ullom and RPIC Carlos Giraldo to establish plans and the agenda for the 2012 Zone 34 Seminar in June. As you know, we have held the Zone 34 Rotary Foundation Seminar in Evanston, IL for the past nine years, and it has been held in late May or early June for the past several years. Last year there was a “Strengthening Clubs” seminar that followed the Foundation Seminar in the same location. The event will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Evanston again this year – beginning Monday, June 3 and concluding on Wednesday, June 5. Kenan, Marcy and Carlos are still working on plans, agendas and a name for the gathering at this time. One thing is certain – the seminar will be filled with great information to help district leaders be completely engaged in the work of Rotary and The Rotary Foundation, and provide them with more tools to help change lives through service to others. Make plans now for representatives from your district to travel to Evanston to participate in the seminar. Kenan will be sending information to district leaders soon, and we will have more information about the event in the next issue of

Foundation Horizons.

Keep on Doing Good in the World.

Zone 34 Hosts Rotary

International Peace Symposium

There have been recent changes in two of the Assistant Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator (ARRFC) positions in Zone 34.

PDG Russ Miller, who was serving his second year as ARRFC, has been appointed by RI Director Anne Matthews to serve as Treasurer for Zones 33-34, effective immediately. This is a three-year appointment, and Russ will serve under the direction of RID Anne for the remainder of her

term as director, and under the direction of RIDN Robert Hall during his term as director. Russ, who served as District 6950 Governor in 2008-2009, has provided outstanding service as ARRFC for the past year. The demands of his

responsibilities as zone treasurer require him to relinquish his position on the Zone Foundation Leadership Team.

Incoming Chair of The Rotary Foundation D.K.

Lee has appointed D6930 PDG Larry Labadie (Florida USA) to fill the ARRFC position that was held by Russ for the remainder of this Rotary Year, and to serve as ARRFC in 2013-2014. Larry served as DG in 2006-2007 and as District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair 2009-2012.

D6910 PDG Gary Moore (Georgia USA) has been appointed by Incoming TRF Chair D.K. Lee to serve as Assistant Regional Rotary

Foundation Coordinator in 2013-2014. Gary, who served as DG in 2008-2009, will succeed Kenan Kern, who is in his third and final year as ARRFC. Kenan will succeed Brent Williams as RRFC in 2013-2014, and will take over the leadership responsibilities of the Zone 34 Rotary Foundation Leadership Team.

Lee Phares (D6990) and Bill Griffin (D6970) will continue to serve as ARRFCs in 2013-2014. Lee will be in her third and final year in that position, and Bill will be in his second year as ARRFC.

Opportunities to Make a Difference

in the World

Rotary clubs in districts from two nations have expressed interest in partnering with clubs or districts within Zone 34 in applying for grants from TRF. One is a club in India seeking an International Partner for a Matching Grant application – hoping to secure one of the final TRF Matching Grants before that grant program ends this Rotary Year. The other is a club in Brazil seeking an International Partner for a Global Grant application for 2013-2014.

The Rotary Club of Vuyyur in D3020 in India wants to apply for a Matching Grant this Rotary Year to purchase a vehicle and retrofit it to serve as a hearse. This hearse would provide transportation of bodies of deceased people from poor families to a burial ground. It is a service for people in great need of this assistance. The club is seeking an International Partner to provide $4000 in DDF to make this grant application possible.

The Rotary Club of Paraiso do Sul in the State of Rio Grande do Sul – D4780 in Brazil – wants to apply for a Global Grant in 2013-2014. It would be to fund a project in the Areas of Focus of Community Development and Water & Sanitation. The project would be to plan and build a water storage system that would minimize the effects of droughts and ensure greater stability to the agricultural and economic sectors in Rio Grande do Sul. The club is seeking an International Partner to provide $5,800 in DDF and $4,600 in cash to make this grant application possible.

Both of these projects provide an excellent opportunity for a club or district that would like to participate in an International Service project. The needs assessment for each of these projects has been completed, and the residents of the communities are committed to helping to sustain the provision of these humanitarian services in the long term.

If you know of any clubs or districts in Zone 34 that might be interested in learning more about either (or both) of these International Partnership grant opportunities, please ask a representative of those clubs or districts to contact RRFC Brent Williams at brentwilliams.rotary@gmail.com – he will be glad to provide more details.

Zone 34 RRFC Named

to TRF’s Fund

Development Committee

Zone 34 RRFC Brent Williams has been appointed by TRF Chair-elect D.K. Lee to serve as a member of the Fund Development

Committee of The Rotary Foundation. This is a two-year appointment, and Brent will serve on the committee July 2013 through June 2015. This is a newly structured committee of TRF, established to provide guidance and advice to the

Trustees of The Rotary Foundation on all aspects of fundraising, including the formulation of strategic direction, policies and guidelines. There will be seven members of the committee, comprised of three Trustees and four Rotarians with extensive experience in Fund Development. Brent served as a Fund Development Officer for the University of Florida for more than three decades prior to his retirement in 2011, and he is completing his three-year term as RRFC in June.

RRFC Brent Williams on his trip to Cambodia District Governor Tom Wade paid tribute to the members of District 6890 for their support of The

Rotary Foundation with their first annual Foundation Gala Event. Approximately 185 Rotarians came to share in fellowship, food and drink during the well received festivities. All new PHFs, Major Donors, Bequest Society members, Benefactors and Paul Harris Society members were recognized

individually for their

generosity. DGE George Robertson Burnett assured all present that he would hold the second annual event next year. Major Gifts Officer, Debra Lowe was a guest speaker and delivered well earned praise for all in attendance. In a very moving speech she expressed gratitude for the increased levels of giving in D6890 and their renewed efforts in getting more involved with The Rotary Foundation. Keynote Speaker, Former ARRFC Russ Miller moved among the crowd as he thanked all of those present for their giving and helping people whom they in all likelihood will never meet. He shared how much 27 cents a day can affect the lives of others not as fortunate as we. He reminded all that we may be just ordinary people but through The Rotary Foundation we are doing “EXTRAORDINARY” things.

FUTURE VISION- IN SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

For the beauty of our land

For, Rotarians gathering here at hand. And for Rotarians far and wide Let peace and service be their guide. For when we gather, we think of needs Of health or social ills, a world to feed. Natural calamities, when folks do bear Lord, guide our minds, so we can share. That from our lives, a light goes forth To, serve our neighbors, here and abroad.

Service above Self that is our drive All nations then for peace can strive. At fellowships when we’re gathered, Lord do bless

Sustain and nourish, our families caress. Failing to serve, we’ll bear the cost Through service rendered, Future Vision is not lost.

Lord let me be a Rotary elf To, serve mankind in Service above Self. In Rotary service, Aulakum- es- Salaam* For Rotarian’s world, eternal Peace and Shalom.

PEACE

Let’s own the peace Because then it’s ours

Or a happenstance Or a turn of good luck But a choice we make Because peace in this world Starts with peace in our hearts

And we need to own it. When we feel hurt Let’s offer forgiveness

When we feel anger Let’s search for understanding

Let’s compete, but not to exclusion of fellowship! And where we see violence

Let’s turn the other cheek Another’s negativity or destructiveness

Need not define how we react Because we own the peace

We choose compassion We choose love We choose altruism

We are Rotarians We are the architects of peace

We own it!
