How to Use This Competency-Based Learning Materials Welcome!

The unit of competency, “Install and Configure Computer System”, is one of the competencies of COMPUTER SYSTEM SERVICING NC II (CSS NC II),a course which compromise the knowledge, skills and attitude required for trainer to possess.

The module, Install and Configure Competency, contains training materials and activities directly related to

a. Assemble Computer b. Prepare Installer

c. Install operating system and device driver d. Install application software

e. Conduct testing and documentation

In this module, you are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete each learnung outcome. In each learning outcomes are Information Sheet, Self Check, Task Sheets, and Job Sheets. Follow and perform activities on your own. If you have question do not hesitate to ask for assistance from your trainer.

Remember to:

 Read information sheets and complete the self-check. Suggested references are included to supplement the materials provided in this module.

 Perform the Task Sheets and Job Sheets until you are confident that your output conform to the Performance Criteria Checklist that follows the sheets.

 Submit outputs of the Task Sheets and Job Sheets to your facilitator for evaluation and recording in the Achievement Chart. Outputs shall serve as your portfolio during the Institutional Competency Evaluation. When you feel confident that you are has sufficent practice, aske your trainer to evaluate you. The result of your assessment will be recorded in your Progress Chart and Achievement Chart.

You must pass the Institutional Competency Evaluation for this competency before moving to another compentency. A Certifcate of Achievement will be awarded to you after passsing the evaluation.

You need to complete the this module before you can perform the module on Set-up Computer Networks.

MODULE DESCRIPTOR: This unit covers the outcomes required in installing and configuring desktop and workstation computers systems. It consists of competencies to assemble computer hardware, install operating system and drivers for peripherals/devices, and install application software as well as to conduct testing and documentation.

ASESSMENT CRITERIA

 Unit assembly is planned and prepared to ensure OH&S policies and procedures are followed in accordance with systems requirements

 Materials necessary to complete the work are identified and obtained in accordance with established procedures and checked against systems requirements

 Tools, equipment and testing devices needed to carry out the installation work are obtained in accordance with established procedures and checked for correct operation and safety

 Computer hardware is assembled in accordance with established procedures and systems requirements

 Basic-input-output-system (BIOS) configuration is performed in accordance with hardware requirements.

 Portable bootable devices are created in accordance with software manufacturer instruction

 Customized installers are prepared in accordance with software utilization guide and end user agreement.

 Installation of portable applications are carried out in accordance with software user guide and software license

 Operating system (OS) is installed in accordance with established installation procedures and to comply with end-user requirements

 Peripherals/devices drivers are installed and configured in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and/or OS installation procedures.  OS and drivers updates/patches are accessed and installed in accordance

with manufacturer’s recommendations and requirements

 On-going checks of the quality of the work are undertaken in accordance with established procedures
