Abstract - The objective of this study was to investigate the suitability of Developing Model of Idea Generating Process for Graphic Design. Eleven experts from the Research were interviewed as well as related documents and literatures were studied to gather useful data for developing the Model. Moreover, for greater knowledge, the researcher consulted with graphic design experts. Three skills including data Analysis skills, data interpretation skills, and design and communication graphics skills were separated from the Model for evaluation. Then the researcher constructed structural questionnaire with five-rating scales to survey seven graphic experts’ evaluation on the Model for each training stage. The results of experts’ evaluation were found as follows; 1. the mean and standard deviation(SD) of Data Analysis skills were 4.50 and .72, respectively; 2. the mean and SD of Data interpretation skills were 4.57 and .62, respectively, 3. the mean and SD of Design and communication graphics skills were 4.6 and .43, respectively. Overall, the experts rated all of three skills at highest level. The findings would be beneficial to

I. INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, graphic design is present all around us. People’s lives are blended with graphic design. It is hard to see the disconnection between life and graphic design [1] Graphic design is a creative process that combines art and technology to communicate ideas [2]. Ideas are developed in the mind, while also exploiting various external representations [3] Idea is important for graphic design. Good work can be created by a graphic designer who has a skill to create good idea [4] The idea of graphic design for social change is also becoming more popular in recent years [5] The more experienced, senior designers would be the ones developing the creative ideas behind the designs graphic Design [6] Ideas can be generated from the combination of two or more highly professional graphics together with your specific needs and taste [7] which is consistent with David Sherwin’s [8] agreement, stating that Idea generation has become increasingly important to me. and ideas that the design will represent and anything else important that the designer

ideas, it is believed, are the base for creative design processes [10].

As mentioned above, idea development is important step. Therefore, this article will represent the model of ideas development training for graphic design

II. THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH

To synthesize and inspect the appropriateness of the developing model of idea generating process for graphic design

III. METHODOLOGY Population and sample

In this study, the population was graphic design professionals with over 10 years working experiences.

The purposive sampling was used in this study. Seven experts were the questionnaire evaluators. Those experts work in private companies in graphic design service, computer, graphic design training institution and universities.

The methodology consisted of two steps as follows:

1. The process of gaining idea for graphic design in Thailand order to developing model of idea generating process for graphic design.

2. To evaluate the experts’ opinions toward the model of idea generating process for graphic design.

Research instrument

The questionnaire, used to evaluate experts’opinions.

Data collection

The researcher used e-mail and telephone as the communication way to invite experts to participate in completing the structured questionnaire on elements of graphic design training course. The experts were met with the researcher. Any expert who was inconvenient to evaluate the questionnaire can complete it through e-mail.

Methodology

1. The diagram of process of gaining idea for graphic design [4] derived from 11 experts was synthesized and developed into the model of idea generating process for graphic design, as shown in figure 1.

Fig. 1 The process of gaining idea for

graphic design [4]

Based on related documents and consulting with graphic design experts, it was found that the figure 2 could be synthesized into the developing model of idea generating process for graphic design, which consists of three skills including Data analysis skills, Data interpretation skills and Design and communication graphics skills.

Fig. 2 Category of skills

1. Data analysis skills consist of three steps as follows.

1.1 Study of determined problems 1.1.1 Analysis 1.1.1.1 Objective 1.1.1.2 Target Group 1.1.1.3 Keywords 1.1.2 Summary 1.1.3 Evaluation

(3)

2 . Data interpretation skills consist of six steps as follows.

2.1 Study related data

2.2 Study the type of designs 2.3 Study existing works

2.4 Search for desired information 2.5 Interpret data in graphical language 2.6 Evaluation

3. Design and communication graphics skills consist of three steps as follows. Step 1 consists of:

1.1. Idea sketching.

1.2. Evaluation of idea sketching. Step 2 consists of:

2.1. Sketch design

2.2. Evaluation of sketch design Step 3 consists of:

3.1 . Presentation

3.2 Evaluation of presentation

After knowing necessary steps of three skills, the researcher asked for experts’ suggestion. Then, three graphic design experts inspected and made suggestions about proposed diagram. The propose diagram was revised by experts as shown in figure 3.

Research instrument

The questionnaire, used to study experts’ opinions

Based on the developing model of idea generating process for graphic design , the researcher constructed structural questionnaire with five-rating scales to survey graphic experts’ evaluation on the model. Then, the researcher asked for suggestions from graphic design consultants and experts, as shown in figure 5.

IV. CONCLUSIONS

It was found that each step of three skills require training process at highest level, as shown in Table 1.

Table 1

Data Analysis skills

Table 2

Data Interpretation skills

Table 3

(5)

Based on table 1 to 3, it was found that each steps of three skills including 1) Data analysis skills, 2) Data interpretation skills and 3) Design and communication graphics skills were important at highest level. Experts’ suggestions

1. Data analysis skills should emphasize the importance of practicability and objective.

2. Data interpretation steps require sufficient amount of data for obtaining correct data and avoiding misleading.

3. Data interpretation skills can go beyond boundless imagination and are applied as guidelines for design.

4. Sketch is important for test and is used as the link between imagination and real work. Greater accurate sketch provide lower mistake and revision, leading more perfect work.

5. Both simple and difficult design and graphic design require simple communication.

As mentioned above, the researcher developed the Model of Graphic Design Training Course.
