• Shopping Cart: software that runs on your website OR externally-hosted cart (such as 1ShoppingCart or E-Junkie)

• Merchant Account: a commercial bank that allows you to accept credit card payments (over the internet or card-in-hand)

• Payment Gateway: a software service that goes between your shopping cart and merchant account (such as Authorize.net)

• Affiliate Management System: a system in which resellers sign-up for an affiliate link, and then send you traffic via that link. It tracks sales made through that links and calculates commissions

(Commissions have to be paid manually, typically through Paypal mass-payments).

Affiliate systems must be compatible into your shopping cart (which

is where things tend to get complicated)

• Paypal: a payment service that combines a simple merchant account & shopping cart, and is also the easiest and most affordable way to take recurring payments

WordPress Shopping Cart Options

• For selling Physical-ship products, or Services, (ie where you have to ship or deliver something manually) it’s easy to add a Paypal payment button to a site – you don’t need a shopping cart plugin for that (demo later…)

• Alternative to Paypal: Use an externally-hosted cart (ie. E-junkie or 1shoppingcart) linked to an Authorize.net compatible merchant account

• Easiest way to add people to your newsletter when they buy is to use an Externally

Hosted cart solution. This is also usually how affiliates are handled. Downside is

$$$.

• For selling Memberships, (ie. they are paying you for access to content) use a membership plugin linked either to Paypal or to an external cart (ie.

1shoppingcart, Clickbank). Membership plugins allow you to sell your content for either a one-time fee or a monthly subscription cost (easy with Paypal – see demo)

Important: Your membership plugin must integrate with the external cart / merchant account / affiliate system

• For selling Digital Downloads, use a WordPress shopping cart plugin Or externally hosted cart that support digital downloads

• If your site is primarily a shopping site (need order tracking, shipping calculations, discount coupons, upsells, customer reviews, etc.) you may want to use a

specialized shopping cart software, not WordPress (ie. OSCommerce, ZenCart) • For simple stores, there are now very good WordPress Shopping Cart plugins (next
