New Students’ Orientation, 23–27 February

Introduction

Welcome to Victoria University . University study and life will bring new opportunities and some challenges . To help you prepare, our New Students’ Orientation programme (NSO) will:

→ help you find your bearings

→ teach you some academic preparation skills → show you what Victoria has to offer

→ help you meet new people and have some fun—all before you get into serious study .

Most orientation events are held at the Kelburn campus . We recommend you attend as many as you can, but especially: → the Welcome to Victoria in Kelburn Park (page 3) → the Campus Coaches kick-off (page 3)

→ for non-halls students, the WGTN Hall events on Monday (page 3) → for halls students: Halls Head Start and VIC101 on Tuesday or

Wednesday—your hall will advise you when and where to go → academic preparation events (page 4)

→ a myVictoria IT session (page 6)

→ your faculty orientation session/s (pages 4–5) → a Library tour (page 9)

→ a campus tour, if you aren’t joining the Campus Coaches programme (page 9) .

ASK ME helpers

Senior students dressed in red t-shirts, holding an ASK ME sign, will be dotted around campus all week, so ask them your questions . If you are lost they will also be able to get you to where you need to be .

The big ‘kick-off’ is on Monday 23 February at 2 .30pm at the following venues—depending on what degree you are studying:

Welcome to Victoria in Kelburn Park

This is the official and fun welcome for all new students to Victoria at 12 .30pm on Monday 23 February . It will be held at Kelburn Park (near the cable car), Salamanca Road, Kelburn .

If you are living in a hall of residence, your hall will arrange for you to be in Kelburn Park at 12 .30pm . If you are not living in a Hall of Residence, see WGTN Hall (below) .

If it is wet, the Welcome will be cancelled early in the morning . Notices will be put on www .victoria .ac .nz and

www .facebook .com/victoriauniversityofwellington or you can

phone 04-472 1000 to check .

WGTN Hall (for non-halls students)

All students who are not living in a hall of residence are welcome at WGTN Hall events . We will have a big presence at the Welcome to Victoria in Kelburn Park . To prepare for this, come to the Hunter Lounge, Student Union building, at 9am on Monday 23 February, and you’ll get a t-shirt, learn a chant and enjoy the information sessions . You’ll then walk to the Welcome as a group .

The following activities are great opportunities to meet other new non-halls students at Victoria:

→ prepare for the Welcome to Victoria at 9am on Monday 23 February, in the Hunter Lounge, Student Union building (this will not be cancelled in the event of wet weather) → WGTN Hall Head Start and VIC101, at 10am on Monday

23 February—we will advise you of the venue during the 9am event in the Hunter Lounge .

Smart Start

Smart Start is a half-day session to learn about academic skills . Topics include tips for successful study, academic expectations, essay writing, reading and note-taking skills . This interactive session is designed to build your confidence, help you meet new people and give you a head start with your studies . It is necessary to attend the whole session: Thursday 26 February, 9 .30am to 1pm, in Lecture Theatre 103, Maclaurin building .

A welcome to students studying the Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS), the Bachelor of Building Science (BBSc) and the Bachelor of Design Innovation (BDI) . It includes an introduction to the first-year programmes and a tour .

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

The orientation for all Bachelor of Arts (BA) students (including those combining it with another degree—for example, BA/LLB, BA/BTeach)— will give you an introduction to how the Faculty’s Student and Academic Services Office can support you throughout your studies . You’ll learn about the BA and the opportunities to study abroad, go on exchange and/or undertake an internship . You will also hear first-hand experiences from current students .

Meet staff who teach the first-year courses and find out how to get the most out of lectures, tutorials and labs .

Get Involved workshop

Want to find out about getting involved and meeting new people? This 30–45-minute interactive session gives you the chance to ask current students about university life—including clubs, physical exercise/team opportunities, volunteering, leadership programmes, overseas exchange, mentoring and spiritual facilities .

These workshops will be held in Lecture Theatre 119, Hunter building: → Tuesday 24 February, 12 noon and 3 .30pm

→ Wednesday 25 February, 10 .30am and 1pm → Thursday 26 February, 11 .30am, 12 .30pm and 3pm .

Halls Head Start programme

This programme for new students in first-year halls of residence runs all week at Boulcott Hall, Cumberland House, Helen Lowry Hall, Joan Stevens Hall, Katharine Jermyn Hall, Stafford House, Te Puni Village, Victoria House and Weir House . It gives you the opportunity to fully participate in New Students’ Orientation week activities, helps you to get to know your hall, your new hall mates, the campuses and Wellington city . Your hall will advise you which day to arrive .

VIC101

This is an interactive session which will introduce you, in a very fun way, to what it’s like to be a student here at Victoria .

myVictoria IT session

This 60-minute session gives a general overview of myVictoria (the student portal) and Blackboard (an online system used to support learning and teaching) and includes a practical session in the CyberCommons that will cover how to get set up for email, internet, storing files and printing . Bring your student ID card or Confirmation of Study so you can log in . All sessions cover the same material .

These sessions will be held in Lecture Theatre 301, Kirk building: → Tuesday 24 February, 9am, 11 .30am, 1pm and 2pm

→ Wednesday 25 February, 11am, 12 .30pm, 2pm and 3 .30pm → Thursday 26 February, 11am and 3pm

→ Friday 27 February, 10am .

Māori students

We welcome all Māori students and whānau to Victoria University, starting with a pōwhiri . Events include:

Mature students

A mature student at Victoria is anyone over 20 years who may not have been involved in study for a few years . Come along to hear from current mature students, pick up study tips, network with other students and learn about support services . This orientation will also include some optional components: a campus tour, a library tour and a myVictoria IT session, which will give you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the Kelburn campus and prepare yourself for university study . The orientation will be on Monday 23 February . Events include: → 9am–11am formal session, starting in Lecture Theatre 323,

Hunter building

→ 11am–2 .30pm approximately, optional sessions (myVictoria IT session, campus tour, Library tour) . Note that some of these optional sessions clash with the Welcome in Kelburn Park . To register for the Mature Students’ Orientation, email course-advice@vuw .ac .nz

Pasifika students

The Pasifika orientation welcomes all Pasifika students and their families to Victoria University to prepare for a successful journey . This programme will give you opportunities to meet key people with whom you can network, as well as faculty staff, and offers a range of workshops designed to prepare you for study at Victoria University . The programme begins with a welcome evening on Monday 23 February, from 5 .30 until 8pm . Meet in Lecture Theatre 103, Maclaurin building . This will be followed by refreshments in the Alan MacDiarmid building .

The Pasifika Students’ Base runs from Tuesday 24 to Thursday 26 February in Rooms 102 and 104, Alan MacDiarmid building . Each day you can:

→ meet up between 8 .30 and 9 .30am for breakfast and a briefing on activities planned for the day

→ drop in to regroup anytime between 9 .30am and 3 .30pm . Meet for breakfast and wrap-up on Friday 27 February from 8 .30 to 11am, in Rooms 102 and 104, Alan MacDiarmid building .

Postgraduate students

If you are starting Honours, a postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma or a Master’s, come to the Postgraduate Orientation session on Tuesday 24 February between 3 and 5pm, in the Memorial Theatre, Student Union building . You will meet other postgraduate students and hear about the Postgraduate Students’ Association (PGSA) and the support services available at Victoria . The event will be followed by refreshments .

Refugee-background students

All new and past refugee-background students and their families are invited to a special event welcoming new refugee-background students to Victoria . Come along on Tuesday 24 February, between 12 noon and 1 .30pm to share food and meet staff and students who are part of a network to support your learning and life . This event will be in Room 632, Murphy building .

Social and sports events

OWeek, 23 February–8 March

Orientation Week (OWeek) is spread over a fortnight in which the Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association (VUWSA) teams up with the University to put on a huge range of events, from the annual Toga Party and Campus Carnivals to international music shows and comedy nights . This year, a number of local festivals are also part of OWeek .

Visit Victoria Recreation—on the city side of the Cotton Building— for sport, fitness and recreation on campus . Check out the popular fitness facilities, group exercise classes, sports leagues and activity programmes that are available for students .

At the Pipitea campus, check out Pipitea Fitness, Room 222 in the Railway West Wing .

The Big Play Out

Relax and unwind at the end of a jam-packed week . Join the fun at The Big Play Out—a day of live music, free food, sports, giveaways and more . Come along on Friday 27 February, between 11am and 2pm, at Kelburn Park (near the cable car), on Salamanca Road, Kelburn .

Toga Party

Delve back to Roman times at VUWSA’s Toga Party on Tuesday 24 February at 7pm .

The annual Toga Party is an R17* event . Dress up in your best toga and sample live music in the Hunter Lounge . Past years have included neon and whiteout themes, and tickets always sell out, so get in quick . For more information on tickets, on sale from 30 January, go to

VUWSA stall

Visit the VUWSA stall in the Tim Beaglehole Courtyard for a free wall planner, diary, the special Orientation edition of Salient and other goodies when you become a VUWSA member . The stall will operate Monday to Friday between 11am and 2pm, from 23 February until 6 March .

Tours

Adam Art Gallery

There will be a guided tour at 3pm on Thursday 26 February at the Adam Art Gallery, Kelburn campus, Gate 3 . Visit the exhibition

Something Old Something New: The VUW Art Collection in Context.

Four mini-exhibitions will showcase recent acquisitions, old favourites and some seldom-seen treasures from Victoria’s art collection, together with several loans brought in especially for the occasion . For more information, go to www .adamartgallery .org .nz

Campus tours

Kelburn campus tours (up to 60 minutes) depart from

Victoria Info Ihonui, Level 1 Kelburn Library entrance, the Hub . See daily times on pages 12–15 . Note that a campus tour is included in the Campus Coaches programme .

Library tours

Twenty-minute tours of the Kelburn Library, Rankine Brown building, will be held daily during New Students’ Orientation week and week one of Trimester One . Tours depart from Victoria Info Ihonui, Level 2 Library entrance, the Hub at 10 .30am, 11 .30am, 12 .30pm, 1 .30pm and 2 .30pm . There is no need to book .
