and stay connected tomorrow.
Philosophy
Keep your e
‑
With five GB of storage and a rich set of features, Windows Live Hotmail is an e-mail account students and alumni can use for life. The user interface is similar to Microsoft® Office Outlook® and it works on virtually any operating system, including Linux and Mac.
And, beginning in Spring 2008, schools can choose to use Exchange Labs as their Live@edu e-mail solution.
Store, access, and
share
Office Live Workspace1 is a personal site for every student to store, access, and share documents and files. Specifically designed to work with Microsoft Office desktop applications and with room for 1000+ files, Office Live Workspace will revolutionize your ability to access your files and collaborate on projects.
Filter spam and
viruses
Microsoft is an industry leader in spam and virus prevention, with innovative technologies like Microsoft SmartScreen®. Hotmail stops more than 95 percent of spam, 99 percent of all image-based spam and has reduced spam 80 percent in the past year—even while spam has increased 40 percent across the internet.
Send and receive
alerts
Universities can send alerts directly to participating students’ mobile devices. Quickly notify students about sports announcements, schedule changes, even breaking news or security alerts2.
The philosophy behind Microsoft Live@edu is to
give students and alumni long-term, primary e-mail
addresses and other supplemental applications they
can use to collaborate and communicate online.
Microsoft updates and adds to Live@edu services
regularly, helping your university offer an
ever-expanding set of services to your students and
alumni. And, students will be using Microsoft
products similar to those used in many workplaces
yet another way you will be preparing your students
for the post-college world. Backed by Microsoft and
a proven, enterprise-grade infrastructure, Live@edu
helps you meet your students’ present and future
needs. Now, that’s something to think about.
Any way you calculate it, Microsoft Live@edu adds
up to a great value. With a variety of free and
low-cost setup options, you can choose the one that’s
right for your institution. While you retain
administrative control, Microsoft Live@edu
removes the concerns and costs of storage,
spam-filtering, backups, and updates, and frees your IT
team to pursue more strategic projects. Your
students and alumni receive world-class e-mail
and Web applications they can enjoy even after
graduation and for much less than the cost of
hosting an on-premise system.
Economics
Lose that flash
drive
Students can use SkyDrive—a personal password protected 5 GB online storage space—to share documents between computers, with friends, or with the whole world.1 The days of trekking around with flash drives may be at an end
Share your
desktop
Share your computer screen with up to 15 people in different locations using SharedView beta. Review and update documents with multiple people in real time or give presentations remotely, easily sharing virtually any page or application on your
computer
Showcase your
own brand
You use your institution’s name, domain name, and brand, and you can add up to six
customized URLs to your students’ Hotmail landing page. For example, you can include links to your school’s library, directory, or newspaper.
Communicate
and collaborate
Users can enjoy real-time chat, full-screen video calling3, and PC–to-PC voice calls with friends, faculty, and family using Windows Live Messenger. It even has group chat to support team discussions, and sharing folders designed to quickly and easily share files across campus or across the world.
You’re still the boss. You’re in charge of
provisioning accounts, using your own domain
name and creating distribution lists and e-mail
groups as you see fit. And to help ensure that
school related e-mail reaches its destination,
your university IP address is safe-listed and
intra-domain e-mail bypasses spam filters. With
Live@edu, you delegate the costly and
time-consuming part—storage and hosting—to
Microsoft, giving your institution time to focus
on what it does best.
Management Studies
Manage and
update contacts
With Microsoft Live@edu, users can easily update their contact details and notify colleagues, peers, and friends of changes. The new contact de-duplication tool helps users clean up contact lists. Contacts are also available in other services like Office Live Workspace, which makes managing permissions easy.
Schedule it
Each user can have a personal calendar to share—or keep private. Students can set up study groups, professors can arrange meeting times, and alumni can set up reunions with ease. Users can even respond to meeting requests and accept meetings in Windows Live Hotmail, and automatically place those appointments on their Windows Live calendars.
Blog
Windows Live Spaces lets users create personal Web sites in minutes, including blogs, forums, music lists, and photo albums to share with classmates and friends. Students can also display their SkyDrive contents to more easily share projects and files. When it’s time to put their education to work, students can set up e-profiles for prospective employers.
Go mobile
Even when they can’t get to a computer, students and alumni will still be able to access their university e-mail accounts or Windows Live Messenger from Web-enabled mobile devices.4
How do I sign up for a pilot?
Simply contact your Microsoft account manager, e-mail [email protected], or go to http://get.live.com/edu.
Do Microsoft Live@edu e-mail accounts ever
expire?
Students can keep their e-mail accounts after they graduate, or you can provide them with new alumni e-mail accounts. As long as users log into their accounts every 365 days, the accounts will not expire. You can suspend and delete e-mail accounts just as you do today.
What support does my institution receive?
Microsoft Live@edu customers receive Premier Online support free of charge, plus 24x7 phone support for critical issues. Students and alumni can use our Web-based support at http://support.live.com
Is Windows Live Hotmail compatible with
browsers other than Internet Explorer®?
Yes. Hotmail is compatible with all current platforms and browsers including Safari, Firefox, and Opera.
What software do I need to get started?
There are three ways to get started. The first and easiest deployment option uses our eduExpress desktop application, which can enable full deployment in two to three days. The second option is our command line application, which lets you batch export data from a student directory and upload it to our servers. The third option uses the Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager (ILM), which is available at special discounted pricing to institutions deploying Live@edu. ILM requires more setup time but provides a ―set-it-and-forget-it‖ deployment which
automatically synchronizes changes in your e-mail directory with the Windows Live service and requires no programming. Developers can also use our SDK to develop customized provisioning methods that integrate at the API level.
What about alumni?
Microsoft Live@edu provides a great way to keep alumni connected to your school by giving them a post-graduation e-mail address that incorporates your school’s domain name and branding.
What is Microsoft Exchange Labs?
Microsoft Exchange Labs is a new research and development effort from the Microsoft Exchange team, advancing the way Microsoft builds, tests, and delivers next-generation e-mail and unified communications capabilities. Schools that are helping us test the next generation of Exchange Server are also using Live@edu, so their students have the option of using a Hotmail inbox or an Exchange inbox. Both provide students and alumni access to 5 GB inboxes, secure e-mail, address book, calendars, and more.
Literature
Find papers
With Microsoft Live@edu, students are linked to all the Live Search tools including Academic Search, which lets them rapidly find and sort articles from hundreds of academic and research journals. Mousing over search results provides bibliographic details, which can be exported to BibTeX or EndNote format for easy citation.
Microsoft Live@edu provides a powerful, familiar,
innovative, and cost-effective platform for
students and faculty to collaborate and
communicate using 21st century technology.
