PolyU staff members may install the above software and patches according to their needs. However, as all these
software and patches will improve the security and performance of your system, you are highly recommended to
install all these patches and software.
If you encounter any difficulties in using the Installer, please contact the ITS Help Centre at 2766 5900.
* In some circumstances, users may need to logout and logon again in order to resume the network settings.
Pre-requisites
- Backup your data
- Close all open applications and files

For WinXP Professional (English version)
- Reserve at least 1GB of free hard disk space for full installation
- Network connection is required
- For notebook computers, AC power must be connected during the SP2 installation
- Novell client 32 for Windows XP must be installed
- Drive F: and G: must be assigned for Novell use
- The WInXP SP2, Post-SP2 Patches and Novell Client 32 installation will reboot automatically

Click on the Software Update for WinXP icon on the desktop to start the installer program.
ClickSP2 Upgrade for WinXP to start the installation. The installation may take 30 to 45 mins and Do NOT shut down or interrupt the machine during the installation.
For Windows XP Professional (English version) machine, press
y
then <Enter> to proceed. Otherwise press n then <Enter> to quit.If the drive letter F: and G: are being used in your PC, the Installer will prompt you to select a drive letter to change and the following screen will be displayed (otherwise, skip to the next step):
Enter a new drive letter to proceed to the next step. You may refer to the "Restore drive letter" section at the end of this document if you want to restore your current drive after the installation.
The following screens will be displayed:
The PC will reboot automatically after the process has been completed.

After reboot of the machine, click on the Software Update for WinXP icon on the desktop to start the installer program again to proceed to the Post-SP2 patches installation.
Install Post-SP2 Patches
- Close all open files
- Your machine will reboot automatically after the process has been completed
ClickPost SP2 Patch and the installation will start automatically. The followings screens will be displayed:
For Windows XP Professional (English version) machine, press

then <Enter> to proceed. Otherwise press n then <Enter> to quit. The following screens will be displayed and the PC will reboot automatically after the process has been completed.After the PC is restarted, click on the Software Update for WinXP icon on the desktop to start the installer program again for further software installation.

Novell Client32 4.9 SP2 for Windows XP

- If you have upgraded your machine with Windows XP SP2, you need to install the Novell Client32 SP2 as well
- Close all open files
- Your machine must reboot after the process has been completed Installation procedures

ClickNovell Client 4.9 SP2 Upgade to start the installation.

- Configured for automatic update of virus signature file daily (between 11:45am to 12:45noon)
- Configured for automatic scan all local hard disks at 12:45noon every Friday

- As a security loophole has been found in the earlier version of WinZip, users are recommended to upgrade to WinZip 9.0 SR-1
- Takes about 5 minutes and 50MB hard disk space - A licensed WinZip 8.x must be installed Installation procedures

Restore drive letter
If your computer is connected to network with Novell Client32, you should leave the drive letter F: and G: for system use. However, if you need to restore the drive letter changed by the Installer, you could use the "Restore Previous Drive Letter" utility to restore the drive letter.
OpenRestore Previous Drive Letter by click Start, and then click All Programs. Click Software Update for WinXP (V1.1) and then double-click Restore Previous Drive Letter.

To restore the system with the drive letter before the installation, press y then <Enter>, otherwise n then <Enter> to quit.
Changing the menu dialogs to Chinese (for WinXP with MUI)
1. Open Regional and Language Options by click Start, and then Control Panel. Double-click Regional and Language Options. 2. Click on the Languages tab and select the display language you want to use in the Language used in menus and dialogs.
ClickOK to save the setting.
