Faculty's Commitment

Centrally located in a modern facility on the grounds of Singapore General Hospital, Duke-NUS is Singapore's first

US-style graduate-entry medical school. We draw on the rich medical training and research at Duke University in North

Carolina and the outstanding resources at the National University of Singapore (NUS). In addition, we collaborate with a

number of strong research institutions in Singapore, including the National Cancer Center, the National Heart Center, the

National Eye Center, the National Neurosciences Institute, and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research

(A*STAR).

Offering innovative MD, PhD, and MD/PhD programmes with a focus on medical research, Duke-NUS prepares doctors

who are not only skilled in patient care, but who are also well equipped to practise in the rapidly changing world of

medicine. We prepare physician leaders who are problem solvers committed to improving the health of individuals and

communities through research. At Duke-NUS, we are committed to helping our graduates transform medicine in the 21st

century. The Duke-NUS MD degree is jointly awarded by Duke University and the National University of Singapore, while

the PhD degree is awarded by the National University of Singapore.

Graduate Education

3 Graduate Education

The Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore offers an innovative and rigorous four-year graduate-entry medical

education programme with a distinctive focus on medical education, research and patient care. Duke-NUS offers the

world-renowned Duke University School of Medicine’s 4-year doctor of Medicine (M.D.) curriculum, with a full year

devoted to independent research. The programme provides students with early clinical exposure, world-class research

opportunities, and the flexibility to tailor their educational experiences. It is the optimal springboard to becoming an

outstanding clinician and academic physician in the biomedical industry.

3.1 Degrees Offered

There are three programmes available to interested candidates:

MD programme (Doctor of Medicine)

This programme spans 4 years and graduates are awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) jointly by Duke

University and NUS.

MD/PhD programme (Doctor of Medicine / Doctor of Philosophy)

All MD/PhD candidates will complete the first two years of the MD programme. In lieu of their third year, candidates will

begin the PhD programme. The PhD typically takes four years to complete, but timing will depend on the student’s area

of research. After completing their PhD, students will return to the MD programme to complete their final year. It is

estimated that it will take 7 years to complete an MD/PhD at Duke-NUS.

PhD programme (Doctor of Philosophy)

Like the Duke-NUS MD programme, the PhD core course incorporates a novel education strategy which rapidly

transitions students to a mode of learning better suited for a lifelong career in biomedical research. The Duke-NUS PhD

is likely to take 4 – 5 years to complete.
