With the innovative system cabling, we supply the complete connection system for the controller families SIMATIC S7-300 and S7-400. You can choose between two versions:

SIMATIC TOP connect

A fault-free and reliable connection between the individual components of an electronic plant is the main prerequisite for its function. Conventional wiring such as single line wiring with terminal blocks is often complex and fault-prone – and in larger plants usually very confusing. SIMATIC TOP connect proves that this can be done differently.

the fully modular connection accord-ing to the buildaccord-ing block principle and the flexible connection with bundled single wires. In any case, tangled cables, mixed-up contacts and time-consuming troubleshooting are a thing of the past thanks to SIMATIC TOP connect – result-ing in considerably increased efficiency when cabling.

For a reliable and quick connection: the front connector module

The front connector module is not a front connector which has been subsequently modified for the SIMATIC S7, it is rather a special development with IDC socket contacts for the easy connection of the connecting cable - fully enclosed for protection against dust in industrial envi-ronments. The original accessory of our PLCs is of course available in the usual SIMATIC quality and adapted to the latest development of the S7-300 or S7-400. Depending on the design, it permits the connection of 2 or 4 connecting cables with 8 channels each incl. power supply via IDC connectors. The front connector module makes the time-consuming and fault-prone connection of up to 40 cores per module unnecessary. The power supply is also accessible via spring-loaded or screw terminals. Furthermore, the SIMATIC S7-300 front connector module offers a special feature for 20-pole mod-ules: It can be placed into a pre-engaged position for activating – thus SIMATIC is ready for operation even faster.

Perfectly matched to each other:

the fully modular connection

In conventional solutions, sensors and

actuators of the machine or plant are connected to the control electronics in the control cabinet via terminal blocks. Compact connection modules are used instead of terminal blocks for connect-ing to SIMATIC S7. The advantage of this method: input/output modules are not connected with the terminal boxes via fault-prone single line wiring but instead via attachable cables. Furthermore, the connection modules are not

only the electrical interface between control cabinet and machine, but they also permit voltage and performance adaptation.

Point-to-point SIMATIC TOP connect Fully modular

The fully modular connection minimizes the wiring overhead and avoids errors that may occur in single line wiring due to polarity reversal on the front con-nector and terminal box. Furthermore, connection modules with signal condi-tioning reduce the overhead even more since wiring of further components, e.g. individual coupling relays, is no longer necessary.

In addition, the uniform and clear con-nection diagram reduces testing periods and, if necessary, facilitates troubleshoot-ing. Configuring is easier and faster due to the use of standard components.

High level of integrated functionality: the connection module

The compact connection modules for standard rail mounting are available with different functionalities. They permit a uniform connection concept even if there are many different requirements. The cost-optimized connection modules are available in the following designs: Basic module, signal module, function module.

With all connection modules you can reduce the wiring overhead even more because the supply voltage can be simply looped through via additional terminals. Since all connections are on the same lev-el, screwdrivers and wires can be inserted from one direction. Thus the connecting wires can be easily attached and screwed in place even in poor lighting conditions. The new optocoupler module offers you special advantages: The compact con-nection module is suitable for very high switching sequences up to 500 Hz and switches load currents up to 4 A. In the case of an overload or open circuit at one of the 8 outputs, a red LED is illuminated and a group fault signalling contact is trigged. Any faults can thus be detected and eliminated more quickly, which in turn increases the availability.

Custom-tailored and pre-assembled: the connecting cable

You can choose the type of connecting cable: custom-tailored for self-assembly or ready for plugging in. In any case it can transfer signals from 8 channels each or 1 byte and additionally handle the power supply. The I/O modules are thus supplied with electric potential via the connection modules – without additional wiring. Furthermore, the cable also wires a 16-channel module to a cable by means of two flat ribbon cables for self-assem-bly. Cable versions with braided copper shields ensure the transfer of sensitive analogue signals without interference. The custom-tailored version of the flat round cable can be easily cut to length to meet your individual requirements. For this purpose, you only need to attach the IDC connectors to the cable ends - and you’re done. Cable entries are imple-mented just as easily and the cores are optimally protected by the cable jacket. The IDC connector can be attached after the cable entry. The ready-to-connect version with pre-assembled round cables is more convenient and can be connected faster. The IDC connectors are already attached to the 16-pole round cable. You only need to connect the round cable to the front connector module and the con-nection module.

Simple and convincing:

the flexible connection

The flexible connection consists of clearly bundled individual wires which are direct-ly connected to the front connector via crimp or screw-type terminals. With a cross-section of 0.5 mm2 they can also transfer higher currents. The individual cores can be routed to any element in the control cabinet – quickly, easily, and flexibly. Each core is clearly marked by a printed number according to the connection point of the module. Mix-ups are thus prevented and the cabinet interior remains organized and clearly arranged. Should a cable become dam-aged, it can be replaced quickly.

By the way: the individual wires are also available as UL/CSA version to facilitate export.

The main advantage of the flexible con-nection: time-consuming screwing at the usually more than 40 terminals is not required. In addition to your plant engi-neer, who can focus on more complex tasks, especially you will benefit from this:
