The Baptism of Our Lord

Organ Prelude

Welcome and Introduction Opening Hymn 7

1. Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true, the only Light,

Sun of Righteousness, arise! Triumph o’er the shades of night:

Dayspring from on high, be near; Daystar, in my heart appear.

2. Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee; joyless is the day’s return, till thy mercy’s beams I see, till they inward light impart, glad my eyes, and warm my heart. 3. Visit then this soul of mine!

Pierce the gloom of sin and grief! Fill me, radiancy divine;

scatter all my unbelief; more and more thyself display,

shining to the perfect day.

The Opening Sentence

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever.

(2)

Celebrant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord.

Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King,

almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God,

you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

The Collect of the Day

F

ather in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

The First Lesson

A Reading from The Book of Genesis (1:1-5).

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a form-less void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

(3)

And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening

and there was morning, the first day. Reader The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God. The Psalm (29) Please respond at the half-verse

1 Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, * ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his Name; * worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; * the Lord is upon the mighty waters.

4 The voice of the Lord is a powerful

voice; * the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; * the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon;

6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, * and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire; the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; * the Lord shakes the wil- derness of Kadesh.

8 The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe * and strips the forests bare.

9 And in the temple of the Lord * all are crying, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; * the Lord sits enthroned as King for evermore.

11 The Lord shall give strength to his peo- ple; * the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace.

The Epistle

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles (19:1-7)

While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” They replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” Then he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They an-swered, “Into John’s baptism.” Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repen-tance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied—altogether there were about twelve of them.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

(4)

Gradual Hymn 121

1. Christ, when for us you were baptized, God’s Spirit on you came,

as peaceful as a dove and yet as urgent as a flame.

2. God called you his belovèd Son, called you his servant true, sent you his kingdom to proclaim,

his holy will to do.

3. Straightway and steadfast until death you then obeyed his call

freely as Son of Man to serve and give your life for all. 4. Baptize us with your Spirit, Lord,

your cross on us be signed, that, likewise in God’s service we

may perfect freedom find.

The Gospel

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark (1:4-11).

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

J

ohn the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to do your will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue

with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in your Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and

peace at home, and that, through obedience to your holy law, we may show forth your praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in you to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(7)

3. Let us praise God together on our knees; Let us praise God together on our knees;

when I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun,

O Lord, have mercy on me. We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins. Silence may be kept.

Leader and People

At the Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and where to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of

heaven and earth.

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; you have revealed your eternal plan of salvation, and have shown your Son Jesus Christ to be the light of all peoples.

Therefore with angels and archangels we raise our voices in joyful praise to proclaim the glory of your name.

Celebrant and People

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The people stand, sit, or kneel.

Then the Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human

nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

(9)

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen.

Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

Celebrant And now, as our Savior

Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Together Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those

who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

(10)

1. Hail to the Lord’s Anointed, great David’s greater Son! Hail, in the time appointed,

his reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression,

to set the captive free; to take away transgression,

and rule in equity.

2. He comes with succor speedy to those who suffer wrong, to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong; to give them songs for sighing,

their darkness turn to light, whose souls, condemned and dying,

were precious in his sight.

3. He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth,

and love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth: before him on the mountains

shall peace, the herald, go; and righteousness in fountains

from hill to valley flow. 4. Kings shall bown before him,

and gold and incense bring; all nations shall adore him,

his praise all people sing; to him shall prayer unceasing

and daily vows ascend; his kingdom still increasing,

a kingdom without end.

At the Breaking of the Bread

Celebrant [Alleluia.] Christ our passover is sacrificed for us;

People Therefore let us keep the feast. [Alleluia.]

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God.

The Post-communion Prayer Celebrant Let us pray.

Together Eternal God, heavenly Father,

you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,

and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you

with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Border Ministry

Your help is needed at the border. Both the Nogales and Agua Prieta borders are getting even more crowded with our sisters and brothers seeking asylum since the gov-ernment closed Sasabe. The warehouse at Nogales is running very low on warm cloth-ing, and we need to re-stock. Will you please help?

Bring warm jackets, sweatshirts, gloves or hats to the courtyard at St Francis. Women’s, children’s and men’s clothing is needed. There will be a box for your offerings but even if there isn’t you may put your items on one of the benches and be assured that they will be picked up and taken to the ware-house in Nogales. Our travelers need these items ONLY, so save anything else you have for another time.

Embodied Bible Studay

Starting on January 4, 2021 at 11 am, Fr. Nelson will be offering an “Embodied Bible Study” group weekly through Zoom.

Rooted in practices from “Embodied The-ology,” the flow of the study will involve reading the past week’s Sunday readings, particularly the Gospel, and then applying interpretations of the text. We will read vari-ous translations and Biblical interpretations and then will enter some time for reflection. As you are comfortable, we will explore how your experiences, identities, and personal narratives influence your relationship to the reading and how you engage with it.

You don’t need to be a Biblical scholar to understand the Bible. In fact, this group will help to empower you to interpret and digest scripture for your daily lives.

Please email Fr. Nelson directly to register at nelson@stfrancisgvaz.org

Mondays on Zoom at 11 am starting Janu-ary 4, 2021 through April 5, 2021.

A Call for Tech Volunteers

We are looking for people interested in learning how our sound system works; if you count yourself among the techies, you’re needed to support the existing sound and audio volunteers in order to alleviate the burden of being here every Sunday. If you’re interested, please email Fr. Nelson directly at

nelson@stfrancisgvaz.org or you may contact Beth-el to express your interest: 625-1370.

The Keys to the Kingdom

(or the Campus anyway)

If you have keys in your possession for any of the doors to the Church/Parish Hall/Of-fice complex, and you no longer have a need for them, we would greatly appreciate hav-ing them returned to Deborah Harby in the Finance Office.

Covenant Fund

Thanks to the COVID pandemic we were not able this year to schedule our traditional Christmas Card Party, the annual event that raises money for the St. Francis Covenant Fund. The fund—administered by the Rec-tor—was established in 1993 by Dorothy Baldwin to provide temporary financial aid for needy St. Francis Parishioners.

The need is still with us, pandemics not-withstanding, and you can help relieve the suffering by dropping off a check to Finance Officer Deborah Harby, or you can contribute online through the Parish website. The need this year is even greater, so please help if you can.
