CASE STUDIES

Department for Education - Roll-out of Microsoft SharePoint 2010

TFPL worked closely with the DfE management team responsible for records, information and knowledge management to understand the background and identify the learning requirements. It was critical that the training be delivered with an information and knowledge management emphasis to complement the technology focussed training that had already been delivered. The aim of the training was to understand the capabilities of SharePoint 2010 and how to exploit it for better knowledge and information management. TFPL presented a three pronged solution comprising; a half day overview for staff members new to SharePoint, a comprehensive one day workshop on SharePoint and Records Management and an intensive one day course for experienced Record Managers. This involved records managers using and configuring real records management functionality in SharePoint. TFPL enabled the team to better understand the problems and challenges they were experiencing, allowed them to brainstorm the issues they were facing and to devise and implement a suitable plan of action.

Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) - Promoting Information Services

The Information Services personnel at the MHRA had been substantially cut back at the same time as the department had invested considerably in its electronic resources. As a result, the team needed a fresh approach to providing information services and to enable users to conduct their own searches effectively and make good use of electronic resources. TFPL designed an in house tailored workshop to demonstrate the teaching of information literacy to an internal audience. The course covered interactive exercises focusing on key behaviours for information literacy, the organisational context for what the team wanted to achieve, understanding stakeholders and the key messages, promotional approaches, timescales and measures for successful implementation. Participants achieved a clear understanding of information literacy and well-defined next steps for developing and implementing the Information Services team’s promotional strategy.
