Scoutmasters:

Thank you for joining us for the Heartland District’s Camporee. The event will take

place at the Ma-Tar-Awa campground on Viejas during the weekend of May 3-5, 2013.

The Camporee Committee has spent a lot of time planning events to test your Scout

Skills in many different activities. These activities are basic scout skills are the skills

needed to obtain rank through First Class. The intent at this year’s Camporee is going

to test those basic scouting skills against the other Scouts in Heartland.

Date: May 3-5, 2013

Location: Ma-Tar-Awa Campground on Viejas

Dress: Class A uniforms will be worn at morning assembly then to activity shirts for morning and afternoon activities. Class A will be required for evening flags and campfire.

Food: Each Troop / Patrol is responsible for its own food. Plan meals and time accordingly.

Registration: The Registration fee is $15 per scout and $10 per adult. The first 2 adults are free with 10 registered scouts. Also, one free adult for every 10 scouts, after the first 10. This fee covers the cost of renting the facility for the weekend, including all equipment and facilities, a souvenir patch and all material/supply costs to deliver the camporee program. Also, make sure to file a Tour Plan for your unit.

Arrival: Upon arrival, patrols will check in at the registration area at the entrance to the camp. At this time you will submit a roster of who is in attendance from your unit and be given your campsite assignment.

Campsites: Campsites will be assigned by camp staff based upon the number of boys being registered for this event.

• Camp in the area assigned to you.

• Tents should be in orderly rows with sufficient aisle space.

• Camp by patrols; this will help you and the judges in the campsite inspection.

• Patrol cooking areas should be large enough and clearly identifiable. • Please have one 1 campfire pit per troop. See separate section about

fires and cooking.

Fires: No ground fires allowed

Water: Please do not leave water running. Please report any water issues to camp staff.

Toilet

Facilities: Facilities will be porta-potties. Please be courteous to others.

Trash: Trash disposal is the responsibility of each troop. All trash must be disposed of properly. Please separate your recyclables and recycle.

Safety: Knives, axes and saws used by units shall be the responsibility of the unit leader. Any unsafe or improper use shall result in the lowering of the patrol score. Anyone using an ax, saw or knife must have a valid Totin’ Chip card. No sheath knives are to be used. Medical personnel will be available at the staff area for any medical emergencies.

Visitors: Parents and siblings who wish to watch the events may attend during the day on Saturday. Visitors should note that there are no concessions at the camp (they will need to bring their own food).

Awards: Awards will be present at the Saturday evening campfire. Awards will be based upon patrol and individual participation.

Special Info: Scoutmasters, we need your help to ensure that none of these items (listed below) are brought to the camporee. Please look over this list carefully.

CAMPOREE

CAMPSITE INSPECTION SHEET

Unit: Inspectors:

Camporee Judges will judge each Troop on the following items. This inspection will take place Saturday during the competition time in the morning.

SHELTER (25 points total)

1. Tents properly erected; trim, securely anchored (10) 2. Tents in clear, well-aligned groups (10)

3. Cover/canopy for cooking/dining facilities properly erected; trim, securely anchored, provides for run-off of rain (5)

COOKING AREA AND/OR FIRE, FIREWOOD AND WOOD TOOLS (40 points total)

1. Fire site a safe distance from tents, etc.; adequately contained (5 ft. radius cleared around 2. fire) (10)

3. Adequate fire buckets and/or other fire-fighting equipment available (10) 4. Unit fireguard chart posted and completed (5)

5. Firewood protected from rain and dampness (5) 6. Wood tools sharp and properly stored (5)

7. Axe yard specifically located and adequately marked off. (min.1/Troop) (5)

HEALTH AND SAFETY (50 points total)

1. Proper disposal of garbage (5)

2. Food adequately protected from contamination and spoilage (5) 3. Dishwashing practices result in clean pots, plates, etc. (5) 4. Cooking equipment stored off ground and clean (5) 5. Clean water is available (5)

6. Location of adequate first aid kit visible to all (10) 7. Campsite is clean and in order (5)

8. Personal equipment neat and stored properly. (uniform by patrol) (10)

FLAGS (10 points total)

1. U.S. and troop flags properly displayed. (U.S. flag on the right side of the entrance to a person standing in the entrance facing out of camp.)

PATROL ORGANIZATION AND OPERATION (45 points total)

1 Evidence of separate patrol sites (10)

2. Scout meals prepared by patrols, not adults (10) 3. Patrol menu posted in Patrol site and kept dry (10) 4. Patrol duty roster posted in patrol site and kept dry (15)

PIONEERING (30 points total)

1. Entrance assembled. (Proper knots and lashings used in the creation of entrance) (20) 2. Camp gadget (The creation of a device, i.e. table, fire bucket holder, etc..) (10)

Patrol events

Knots:

Knots used will be from the Tenderfoot, Second class and First class ranks.

Pioneering:

Timed pioneering events, using any of these lashings: Square, Diagonal, tripod, or shear

Fire building and safety:

Timed event to build a fire and boil water

Timed event to start a stove, cook a pancake

Map and compass:

Compass bearings to follow an invisible maze

First Aid:

Realistic first aid scenario to emphasize blood barrier precautions (gloves and face protection) along with contact of Emergency medical services.

Another realistic first aid event for bandages for head, arm and ankle along with two man carry

Plant identification:

Review of local plants then a timed test

Animal Identification:

Review of local animals then a timed test

Scout Safety:

Testing of basic scout knowledge, safety afloat, and safe swim defense for Tenderfoot, Second class and First class ranks.

Team Building events:

Program Patrol-

We need a patrol to raise the morning flags and lead the Pledge

of Allegiance and lower flags at 5pm.

We will be doing four highland games events:

(using cardboard tubes from carpet rolls)

Campfire:

Troops / Patrols are invited to perform songs or skits at the campfire. Any group

that wishes to perform at campfire must present a preview to Camporee chair /

staff to determine that the content is appropriate. All songs and skits must be

presented by 1700 (5pm) in order to be on the campfire program.
