A

line plot

is a graph that shows frequency of data along a

number line

.

Abbey used a ruler to measure the lengths of six crayons. Then she made a line plot to show her results.

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

How can Abbey take this data and display it on a line plot?

!

1. First, make a number line with a scale that supports the longest measured crayon.

2. Next, crayon #1 measures 1 ½ inches, so place an “X” above the number 1 ½ inch mark on the line plot. 3. Again, crayon #2 measures 2 inches, so place an “X” above the 2 inch mark on the line plot.

4. Continue doing this until you have displayed all the data on the line plot.

create a line plot

Some of the students in Mrs. Brunello’s class walk to school. The data show the distances these students walk. What distance do most students walk?

!

Make a line plot to show the data.

!

Step 1: Order the data from least to greatest distance and complete the tally table.

!

!

______________________________________

!

Step 2: Label the fraction lengths on the number line below from the least value of the data to the greatest.

!

Step 3: Plot an X above the number line for each data point. Write a title for the line plot.

!

!

!

!

So, most students walk __________ .

!

!

!

How many more students walk mile than mile to school? ___________________

!

What is the difference between the longest distance and the shortest distance that students walk?

!

!

What if a new student joins Mrs. Brunello’s class who walks mile to school?

How would the line plot change? Explain.
