Certified Nurse Aide Course Description:

The HSECA Certified Nurse Aide training program contains content and skills that may allow the students to have experiences in an actual health care setting.

CNA Course Content Areas:

Vital Signs Infection Control

Patient Rights Medical Math

Mental Health Care Direct Patient Care Skills

Rehabilitation Care Medical Abbreviation

Communication Technique Death, Dying, & loss

Care of the Aged Employability Practices

Safety Procedures Emergency Procedures

Certified Nurse Assistant Exam Eligibility and Hospital Internship Requirements:

Documented hours of patient care skills completed in laboratory setting

Documented hours of classroom lecture time 20 hours of long term care clinical experience-

Students MAY NOT BE ABSENT for any reason on clinical days to obtain certification.

Students are allowed 12 absences which may: Include school related absences.

If students exceed 12 absences they may not be eligible for the clinical experience according to State requirements.

Tests, quizzes and laboratory skills must be completed with a minimum of 75%, this is a state requirement.

Required paperwork and assignments must be completed .by assigned due dates. Students who do not complete assignments by due date WILL NOT be eligible for clinical days and certification

Tuberculosis skin tests Completed and up to date immunizations

Criminal background checks with no felonies, and Drug Screen will be completed by the

Personal Management Arrives on time, in uniform with all necessary supplies

Problem Solving Completes assignments and uses time wisely

Teamwork Works as team member with,assistant,peers and others

participating with outside experiences

Student Outcomes:

The successful student will be eligible to register for the Certified Nurse Assistant exam. The cost of the exam is $176.50 and due at the time of testing. A cashier's check or money order is needed to pay; $76.50 is paid to the testing service and $100 is paid to the regional testing site. In addition to being eligible for this exam, students will have the knowledge and experience to apply for positions in an entry level health care setting.

Text & Materials:

• Mosby's Textbook for Nursing Assistant's;fee will be assessed if textbook not returned

• Scrubs will be assigned accordingly; fee will be assessed if not returned

• Grading:

o Grades will be compiled based on written

tests,

Lab skills, Clinical Experiences,

Assignments, Attendance, and Career and Employability points.

o Students must obtain a 75% on all assignments, written

tests,

and skills to be eligible for

their clinical rotation. Any student not eligible based on their grade will not be able to complete their clinical rotation.

Late Work Policy:

Late Work will NOT be accepted. Assignments are given with ample days/time for the student to complete. If absent on day assignment is due, the student must turn in on 1st day returning to class.

Quizzes & Tests:

The majority of quizzes and tests will be completed on the day administered. If you are absent, you MUST complete the quiz or test on the first day back. You will have ample notification of the testing date and plenty of time to prepare and study. You must achieve a 75% or higher on each quiz and test to be eligible for the Certified Nurse Assistant Exam and to be eligible for your clinical rotation at the end of the course. This is a State of Michigan requirement.

Attendance:

o Due to the program being a State of Michigan requirement attendance is mandatory. Students may not exceed the 1 2 absences.

o The hours scheduled for the clinical experience must be attended 100% of the time, NO EXCEPTIONS! We are only permitted to be at the clinical site for a limited amount of time. We must meet the State of Michigan required hours.

Laboratory Requirements:

Students are expected to participate in all skills with their peers and instructors. All skills must be completed at a level of 75% or above to be eligible for the Certified Nurse Assistant Exam.

Other:

• Keeping up with the Class work Assignments

Students who are having difficulty should notify the instructor as soon as possible. • Working with Peers, Instructors,& Mentors

Come with the attitude to have fun, meet new people, and gain knowledge of health care and careers.

Eligibility for Clinical and State of Michigan test:

• Students must have a 75% on all class work, tests, and skills to attend clinical • Students must have no attendance issues to attend clinical

• Dress Code Policy

1. Uniform

• Arrive to class in scrubs everyday • White or black athletic shoes

• Only white shirts may be worn underneath your scrub top (optional)

2. Jewelry

• Needs to be discreet with items, such as: watch, wedding ring, necklace or earrings

• No body piercing visible other than ears.

Hair

• Hair is to be clean, neat, and well groomed. Shoulder length hair or longer must be pulled back behind the ears off the neck when in the clinical, learning resource or simulation lab settings.

• Males are expected to be clean-shaven or facial hair/moustache and beards neatly trimmed.

• Hair must be of a color found in nature (no pink, blue, etc.).

4. Nails

• Nails are to be clean, groomed, and manicured.

• Artificial nails are prohibited in the clinical setting. • Nails are to be cut to the tip of the finger and groomed. • Only clear nail polish may be worn.

• No fingernail jewelry.

5. Other

• Makeup will be subdued. Personal hygiene including oral care, daily

showering/bathing, and the use of deodorant is expected.

• No perfume or scented lotions are to be worn.

• Gum chewing is not permitted.

• Tattoos must be covered and riot visible.
