Why Visual Studio 2005

Visual Studio® 2005 represents one of the most significant developer tools releases since the introduction of Visual Studio nearly a decade ago. When you upgrade to the latest Microsoft® .NET development tools, you’ll immediately gain a wider spectrum of development possibilities and a greatly advanced design experience.

Visual Studio 2005 comprises a complete set of development tools for building ASP.NET Web applications, XML Web services, Microsoft Windows®-based applications, and mobile applica-tions. Visual Basic®, Visual C++®, Visual C#®, and Visual J#® all use the same integrated develop-ment environdevelop-ment (IDE), which allows them to share tools and facilitates the creation of mixed-language solutions.

In addition, these languages leverage the functionality of the .NET Framework, which is a Windows component for building, deploying, and running applica-tions. It includes the common language runtime (CLR) and ASP.NET (for building and running Web applications) and Windows Forms (for building and running Windows-based applications). The .NET Framework is designed to improve productivity and increase application reliability and security by providing a fully managed application environment. What’s more, if you’re a Visual Basic developer, Visual Studio 2005 enables you to easily address the common development challenges associated with creating, installing, and maintaining modern

Windows-based applications while enabling popular new scenarios, including Web, Microsoft Office-based, and mobile applications.

Create dynamic Web applications.

• Easily create dynamic Web applications that run up to three times faster and handle twice as many users than comparable Visual Basic 6 applications.

• Take advantage of more than 100 new reusable controls for quickly building fast, powerful Web applications. Reusable components simplify virtually every aspect of Web application development, including user interface design, data access, site navigation, user member-ship, Web site security, and more.

• Easily maintain consistent page design by using Master Pages with their built-in templat-ing system.

• Simplify the publishing and updating of Web applications with a built-in, “publish to the Web” tool.

• Get started quickly using fully functional sample Web applications with documentation and learning guides.

Create powerful Windows-based applications.

• Create applications more easily with a series of new Windows controls with easy-to-use interfaces, including the same look and feel as Microsoft Office toolbars and menus. Wizards and SmartTags simplify the customization of these controls.

• Use improved design tools for fast, “drag and drop” creation of powerful and scalable data user interfaces without writing any code.

• Easily package and publish Windows-based applications to the Web, a file share, or CDs using ClickOnce deployment.

Create and debug Windows-based applications in record time using the most powerful version of Visual Basic ever created.

• Quickly take advantage of hundreds of easy-to-find, pre-written classes to solve common programming tasks. Common tasks include networking, working with user interfaces, and data access.

• Enjoy simplified access to the .NET Framework and common resources with language enhancements such as the My namespace. Access the full power of the platform with additional enhancements in Visual Basic 2005, including full Generics support. • Automatically fix common syntax errors using Autocorrect.

• Rapidly find and fix bugs without having to restart your applications using enhanced “Edit and Continue.”
