seoond l e v e l f o r 210 f e e t , on the t h i r d l e v e l f o r 540 f e e t , end on the f o u r t h l e v e l f o r 700 f e e t , a t o t a l of 1,450 f e e t . Raises have been made from the seoond l e v e l 155 f e e t , t h i r d l e v e l 170 f e e t , and from the f o u r t h l e v e l 200 f e e t , a t o t a l of 525 f e e t .

com-p a r a t i v e l y l a r g e s o a l e i n t h i s camcom-p. I t owns the Cariboo, Amelia, Okanagan, Saw Tooth, A l i c e , Emma, and Maple Leaf m i n e r a l olaims, a l l of which a d j o i n . From o f f i c i a l r e p o r t s submitted to the an-n u a l g e an-n e r a l meetian-ng of shareholders h e l d r e o e an-n t l y i an-n Toroan-nto,

t h e - f o l l o w i n g i n f o r m a t i o n i s taken:- " " During the past y e a r there were mined and m i l l e d 15, 238 tons

o f ore, whioh y i e l d e d 11,469 ozs. of g o l d b u l l i o n and 557 tons of c o n c e n t r a t e s . T h i s ore was taken f o r the most p a r t from the Saw Tooth and Okanagan olaims. The m i n i n g of ore was l a r g e l y i n

con-j u n c t i o n w i t h the f u r t h e r e x p l o r a t i o n o f the mine, consequently a c o n s i d e r a b l e p o r t i o n of the year's output was of ore e x t r a c t e d from d r i f t s and r a i s e s opened up i n the course of the development, whioh was c a r r i e d on, to the e a s t , on the Okanagan and, to the west, on the Cariboo. Development of the p r o p e r t y i n o l u d e d 4

s h a f t s , the main s h a f t being 370 f e e t i n depth, Owing to extended breaks i n th4 c o n t i n u i t y of the v e i n , both east and west of the v a r i o u s l e v e l s , the contemplated i n c r e a s e i n the c a p a c i t y of the Company's stamp m i l l was not made. To reduce the oost of e x p l o r a -t i o n of ground beyond where -the ledge was broken, b o r i n g w i -t h a diamond d r i l l was r e s o r t e d to, and t h i s was i n progress on the date of the s h a r e h o l d e r s ' meeting. The e r e c t i o n of a c y a n i d e - p l a n t f o r the treatment of the t a i l i n g s , s y s t e m a t i c t e s t s of whioh showed them t o c o n t a i n values o f from $2.20 to $4.80 p e r ton, i s favoured by t h the Managing D i r e c t o r , who i s of o p i n i o n t h a t i t would c o n s i d e r a b l y i n o r e a s e the q u a n t i t y of g o l d saved. Reoeipts from b u l l i o n f o r the y e a r were $160,831.85, and the balance of net p r o f i t was $53,148.02

of whioh the sum of $50,000 was p a i d to shareholders as d i v i d e n d s . The t o t a l amount t h i s mine has p a i d i n d i v i d e n d s t o date i s

$459,337. The payment of d i v i d e n d s has, however, been t e m p o r a r i l y suspended, and the p r o f i t s d e r i v e d from the mine are being a p p l i e d t o more e x t e n s i v e development of the p r o p e r t y , w i t h the objeot of e v e n t u a l l y i n c r e a s i n g i t s e a r n i n g power. The r e o e i p t s from b u l l i o n up to the 31st. December, 1899, amounted to the sum of $676,680.36,

Superintendent, J.P.Keane, L o o a l Manager and Superintendent, Mr. B e t t s , i s the most important and, In f a c t , the o n l y s u c c e s s f u l l y working mine i n the camp, and i t i s t o i t that the p l a o e owes i t s v e r y e x i s t e n c e . The company owns the Okanagan, Saw Tooth, Amelia, Cariboo, A l i c e , Emma and Maple Leaf m i n e r a l c l a i m s , a l l a d j o i n i n g . The a c t u a l workings are a t present c o n f i n e d t o the f o u r f i r s t ment i o n e d and exmentend a l o n g menthe l e a d f o r from 1,700 mento 2,000 f e e ment , a ment -t a i n i n g a maximum dep-th o f 560 f e e -t , a l -t h o u g h -the main l e a d and others are t r a c e d beyond the p r o p e r t i e s each way by numerous open outs, p i t s , e t c .

The f o r m a t i o n of t h i s l o c a l i t y i s c h i e f l y composed o f h i g h l y a l t e r e d a r g i l l a c e o u s and quartzose rooks, a l t e r n a t i n g w i t h those o f a f i n e - g r a i n and igneous o r i g i n , c h i e f l y diabase, the whole h a y i n g a g e n e r a l n o r t h and south t r e n d . There are shown i n the v a r i o u s workings t o be a t l e a s t two important v e i n s c u t t i n g a c r o s s the

f o r m a t i o n ahftut E. and W. and h a v i n g a d i p to the south a t an angle v a r y i n g from 80 to 95 degrees, w h i l e a c r o s s - v e i n running about H.E;. and S.W. passes through the camp.

The o n l y one of these l e a d s whioh has, so f a r , been worked to a p r o f i t i s that upon which the Carlboo-MoKinney mine workings a r e . T h i s i s a q u a r t z v e i n of r a t h e r v a r i a b l e width, sometimes as much as 12 o r 14 f e e t , b u t averaging about f o u r f e e t .

The v e i n i s e v i d e n t l y continuous w i t h depth, and i s t r a c e a b l e throughout the camp by i t s outoroppings. The workings have demons-t r a demons-t e d demons-t h a demons-t i demons-t i s a l s o s u b j e c demons-t demons-to a s e r i e s o f f a u l demons-t s , which condemons-tinue t o the lowest l e v e l s and almost always throw the l e a d more o r l e s s t o the south, accompanied w i t h a crushed zone i n which values do not occur. T h i s f a u l t i n g i s a l s o accompanied w i t h two o r more l i n e s of b r e a k i n g o r s l i p p i n g to the e a s t , the whole being extremely com-p l i c a t e d , y e t h a v i n g s u f f i c i e n t r e g u l a r i t y t o enable the management t o estimate w i t h much exactness where to f i n d the v e i n again when i t i s cut o f f , as very f r e q u e n t l y occurs.

The q u a r t z i s u s u a l l y a b l u i s h white o o l o u r and i s m i n e r a l i s e d w i t h i r o n s u l p h i d e s , z i n c blende, galena, e t c , I n s m a l l bands,with

f r e e g o l d disseminated throughout and which i s f r e q u e n t l y v i s i b l e , more p a r t i c u l a r l y where the q u a r t z i s w h i t e r and the m i n e r a l i s a t i o n

sparse. The vaoues are not u n i f o r m throughout, but run i n pay

chutes, which seem t o d i p i n the l e a d to the e a s t . T h i s p r o p e r t y has been i n o p e r a t i o n about seven y e a r s , d u r i n g whioh time a c o n s i d e r a b l e amount has been p a i d i n d i v i d e n d s , amounting to date to $459,337.52. The o l d workings were from the outcrop and c o n s i s t e d of s h a l l o w

s h a f t s and a t u n n e l ; more recent work has, however, been more

MINNIE-HA-HA MINERAL CLAIM. (1898).

This c l a i m l i e s n e a r l y 1,500 f e e t south o f the Cariboo and i s owned by the Minnie-ha-ha Cold M i n i n g Company, of Toronto; P r e s i d e n t , P r o f e s s o r H. Montgomery. C a p i t a l s t o c k , $1,000,000 i n 1,000,000 $1,00 shares, 525,000 of which have been s e t a s i d e as t r e a s u r y s t o c k . Present p r i c e o f shares, 19 cents. The work done on the c l a i m c o n s i s t s o f a working s h a f t 102 f e e t , w i t h 24 f e e t o f c r o s s c u t t i n g and 185 f e e t o f d r i f t i n g . The mine i s f u r -n i s h e d w i t h a double c y l i -n d e r h o i s t , steam pump a-nd d r i l l s .

There a r e good bunk houses, a boarding house, and an assay o f f i o e , e t c . , on the p r o p e r t i e s . The c h a r a c t e r o f the ore i s f r e e m i l l -i n g and c o n c e n t r a t -i n g , the v e -i n be-ing wh-ite q u a r t z , c a r r y -i n g -i r o n p y r i t e s and galena, w i t h a l i t t l e blende and o h a l o o p y r l t e . The mine i s under the superintendence o f M a j o r A i n s l e y Megraw.

South o f the Minnie-ha-ha i s the B i g Bug, upon whioh i s a 30 f o o t s h a f t .

owned by the Carlboo-MoKinney M i n i n g and M i l l i n g Company, Limited, of Toronto. The f o l l o w i n g comparative statement w i l l be o f i n t e r e s t : *

15,614 tons of ore mined and m i l l e d i n 1902, 11,414 tons were taken from the Cariboo, 4,100 tons from the Okanagan, and 100 tons from ' the Saw Tooth F r a c t i o n ; that the average value of t h i s ore was $9.96

p e r t o n , o f whioh $6.95 o r 69.8# was e x t r a c t e d as f r e e g o l d by amalgamation, $1.74 o r 17.4$ was o b t a i n e d i n the oonoentrates and the r e -m a i n i n g $1.27 o r 12.8$ was l o s t i n the t a i l i n g s ; and that w h i l e no un-u s un-u a l development work had been done d un-u r i n g the year, y e t ore r e s e r v e s had been kept opened up w e l l I n advance o f the stopes. The develop-ment work done o o n s i s t e d o f 1,040 l i n e a l f e e t o f d r i f t l n g a n d 190 f e e t

of r a i s i n g , I n a l l 1,230 f e e t . The average number o f men employed f u l l time was 41, of whom 25 were underground, and 16 on the s u r f a c e l D i v i d e n d p a y i n g was resumed i n 1902, a f t e r an i n t e r v a l n e c e s s i t a t e d by a g r e a t d e a l o f development h a v i n g had t o be done the p r e v i o u s y e a r t o

r e c o v e r the f a u l t e d v e i n . The Company's aocounts show the t o t a l b u l l i o n r e o e i p t s t o the end o f 1902 to have been $1,105,861.58 and the t o t a l of d i v i d e n d s p a i d as $509,337.52.

A t Camp McKinney, t h e C a r i b o o McKlnney Co.mined and m i l l e d about 15,000 tons o f are, q u a r t z c a r r y i n g f r e e g o l d , h a v i n g a gross assay value o f $5.50 p e r ton. The development o f t h i s p r o p e r t y , however, has not o f l a t e been such as to g i v e encouragement; consequently, a t

the l a s t a n n u a l meeting o f the company, on the report of the s u p e r i n -tendent, dated DecernberZlst, 1903, the d i r e c t o r s gave i n s t r u c t i o n s t o c l e a n up a l l ore and suspend o p e r a t i o n s I n d e f i n i t e l y .

From t h i s 4 t h . l e v e l , a t a p o i n t some 600 f e e t east of the s h a f t , a winze has been sunk 200 f e e t , w i t h a 5 t h . l e v e l 400 f e e t l o n g a t 100 f e e t , and two s m a l l i n t e r m e d i a t e l e v e l s a t 50 and 150 f e e t r e s -p e c t i v e l y . The 6th. l e v e l had not been s t a r t e d , but -p r e -p a r a t i o n s f o r so d o i n g were being made. T h i s winze I s operated by a compressed a i r h o i s t i n g p l a n t , the ore being h o i s t e d i n buckets and dumped i n t o a b i n on the l e v e l . The mine p l a n s are kept w e l l up t o date and are

I n a d d i t i o n to t h i s there are Innumerable c r o s s - c u t s , winzes, e t c . , rendered necessary by the c o m p l i c a t e d o h a r a c t e r of the v e i n , and the v a r i o u s r a i s e s connecting the l e v e l s p r o v i d e an e f f i c i e n t system o f v e n t i l a t i o n . The work a t present seems to be o h l e f l y on and below

the 4 t h . l e v e l , I t being understood t h a t above t h a t p o i n t most of the f l r s t o l a s s ore has been removed, l e a v i n g , however, a c o n s i d e r -a b l e tonn-age o f second-cl-ass ore, whioh w i l l be mined when the st-amp-

stamp-i n g f a c stamp-i l stamp-i t stamp-i e s are stamp-i n c r e a s e d , as stamp-i s now contemplated.

HOISTING PLANT. The p l a n t a t the h o i s t i n g s h a f t oomprises a 60 horse power double-geared f r l o t l o n h o i s t of the Union I r o n Works p a t t e r n ; 2 r e t u r n f l u e t u b u l a r b o i l e r s , wood f i r e d and o f 50 and 60 horse power r e s p e c t i v e l y , t o g e t h e r w i t h h e a t e r s , pumps, e t c These same b o i l e r s supply steam t o a 1 0 - d r i l l Rand a i r compressor which operates the h o i s t a t the winze and a l s o the a i r d r i l l s . The oage i s a Rosdon

s a f e t y , c a r r y i n g one o a r whioh holds ahout one ton o f ore. The average output of the mine f o r the l a s t two y e a r s has been about 16,000 tons e r annum, h a v i n g a gross recovered value o f about $150,000, o r between 9, and $10. p e r t o n .

There were about 60 ire a employed underground, two s h i f t s of 8 hours being ran i n the mine g e n e r a l l y and three i n the winze.

The ore i s loaded i n a o a r i n the mine from chutes, and i s then h o i s t e d t o the s u r f a c e and trammed about 360 f e e t to an ore r e c e i v i n g b i n , I n t o which i t i s dumped. From here i t i s a g a i n f i l l e d i n t o a o a r and trammed over a covered t r e s t l e f o r 400 f e e t t o the s t a m p - m i l l ,

where i t i s dumped o v e r a g r i z z l y and broken by a crusher, f a l l i n g i n t o b i n s behind the stamps, I n t o which l a t t e r i t I s f e d by automatic

f e e d e r s .

Stamp-mill. The s t a m p - m i l l , o l d and not v e r y w e l l housed o r equipped, weems e f f T o l e n t and economical. I t c o n s i s t s of f o u r 5-8tamp batteries weight of stamps, 850 l b s ; 98 drops p e r minute of from 5& t o 7 inches

i n the o r d e r 1, 5, 2, 4, 3, d i s c h a r g e , 5& t o 6£ inohea through a No. 6 o r 7 d i a g o n a l s l o t s c r e e n . Of the v a l u e s reoovered, about 86$ a r e

caught on the p l a t e s , and 14$ reoovered i n c o n c e n t r a t e s , of whioh t h r e e tons are saved f o r eaoh 100 tons of ore stamped. Ihe disoharge from the p l a t e s pa sses through mercury t r a p s and to s e t t l i n g tanks,from whenoe i t i s f e d t o two Johnstone and one W h l f l e y c o n c e n t r a t i n g t a b l e s .

The t a i l i n g s from the t a b l e s run out and are Impounded by two dams, some 20,000 tons, whioh a r e r e p o r t e d , t o c o n t a i n v a l u e s to the e x t e n t

PANDRE AND ALMA MINERAL CLAIMS. (1898)*

These two c l a i m s t o the n o r t h of the Eureka, upon whioh a n i c e , though s m a l l v e i n o f white q u a r t z , c a r r y i n g g o l d , has been d i s c o v e r e d * On the Pandre a w o r k i n g s h a f t has been s t a r t e d , now down 12 f e e t * The v e i n has a l s o been opened up f o r 100 f e e t . On the Alma, two s h a f t s have been sunk on the v e i n to a depth of 10 f e e t eaoh, a t which depth the v e i n would appear to be about 18 inches wide*

T h i s c l a i m i s about 2000 f e e t east o f the Cariboo and i s supposed t o be on the same r e i n . I t i s owned by the Waterloo Gold M i n i n g Company, o f Spokane, w i t h head o f f i c e s a t Camp

MoKinney. C a p i t a l s t o c k , $100,000 , i n 1,000,000 10-oent shares, now quoted a t 9 c e n t s . The q u a r t z i s o f a b l u i s h c o l o u r , s i m i l a r

i n c h a r a c t e r t o the Cariboo, and bunches c o n t a i n i n g f r e e g o l d have been met w i t h i n s i n k i n g No. 2 s h a f t . The v e i n i s w e l l - d e f i n e d , and aye rages over 6 f e e t i n width. Two s h a f t s have been sunk on a v e i n , 390 f e e t a p a r t , the west o r No. 1 s h a f t i s 4£ by 9 f e e t and i s 50 f e e t deep; the east o r No. 2 s h a f t I s 5 by 7 f e e t , and 70 f e e t deep.
