St. Vincent de Paul Society

Jan. 21 = $

In the Gospel today we read that because Jesus spoke with authority his reputation spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. As his disciples, we can also speak with authority when we put our faith into actions by helping the poor and suffering.

This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist many families, providing assistance with food, utilities and rent. May God Bless You!

Thank you

for your generosity to our parish.

Please realize how important it is that you use your

envelopes and that you “make-up” your weekly

contribution when you are not present at Mass for a particular weekend. We appreciate all that you do for our parish.

For January 21, 2018

Envelopes = 135 $4,349.00

Money not in envelopes 374.00

Total $4,723.00

Maintenance = 2 $30.00

Truck maintenance = 1 $30.00

Utilities = 10 $130.00

Special collection = 57 $622.00 Money not in envelopes 272.00

Total $894.00

Dear Parishioners,

Today’s readings continue the theme of discipleship. This makes a lot of sense as we are in the early weeks of

the Liturgical Year, and are being formed by the readings into the disciples Jesus needs us to be. In a way it is

like Basic Training. We hear the job description of a prophet from the prophet par excellence Moses himself.

He who received the Law of God from God Himself then acted as God’s spokesperson teaching and sharing

the Law with the people. We learn the basics of the role of the prophet… that he will not act independently

but will be raised up or called by God Himself. Secondly, the prophet will not be an outsider but will be raised up from among the people. Third the word the prophet speaks will be given to him by God. And fourth, be-cause the prophet speaks the word of God, he will have the authority of God in his work. A true prophet like Moses is never an outsider, but someone who is filled with the Spirit and is sharing something of God with what he says and does. Consider this when you consider your own call to discipleship, and that to empower you in your role as a disciple you were anointed a priest, PROPHET, and king at your Baptism!

The ultimate example of this authority is Jesus Christ Himself. Through Baptism we become co-workers with

Christ in building up the Kingdom of God. To do this we must battle sin in our own lives and in the world around us. That evil is real and its fruit is destruction and division. We are not left unaided in this struggle because of the graces we receive in Baptism. This coming September 15, 2018 the second Hope Conference

will be held at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium (save the date!); this year the theme is “Hope of the Nations”.

I am excited that one of the speakers already booked for the conference is Dr. Mary Healy, a professor of Scripture at the seminary in Detroit who has written several excellent books, among them a commentary on the

Gospel of Mark. This is what Dr. Healy writes about this section of Mark’s Gospel that we read today: “The

story of Jesus’ first exorcism portrays the forces of evil in a way that may appear to readers today as strikingly personal. For Mark, as for the whole New Testament, evil is not an impersonal force but is concentrated in invisible, malevolent beings who are bent on destroying human beings and hindering God’s plan of salvation. These evil spirits are responsible for various mental and even physical maladies (7:25; 9:17–27; see Matt 12:22; Luke 13:11). Some exegetes, noting that the Gospels do not always clearly distinguish between illness and demonic possession, have concluded that the references to demons are simply a mythical way of symboliz-ing the misfortunes to which human besymboliz-ings are prone. The Church has always taught, however, that demons are real spiritual beings, fallen angels who were created by God but became evil by their own free choice (Catechism 391–95). Anyone tempted to dismiss accounts of demons as fables does not have to look far to see evidence of their influence today. Such phenomena as “racial cleansing,” group suicides, and the sexual abuse of children show a more than merely human malice at work, seeking to destroy the image of God in man. But as frightening and real as is the power of demons, the authority of Christ is infinitely superior. Through his cross and resurrection, Christ definitively conquered the powers of hell. For the present time, however, their malicious actions are permitted by God, who is able to work good out of every evil (Rom 8:28). The grace of baptism affords us protection from demons and the strength to resist their seductive influence.”

God calls us to share knowledge of Him and of His Love for His people by sharing our faith. We do not make it up as we go along, but allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit. To be led we must be open to God,

firm-ly rooted in our prayer life, and “graced up”, by which I mean we are up to date in attending Mass, going to

Confession, receiving the Eucharist. These Sacraments are gifts from God for a purpose, the strengthen us in our discipleship and to build up the Kingdom of God. So attend to the lessons we learn in our Spiritual Basic Training. Being a prophet is not an easy job, but formed and guided by God and His Spirit we are able to

ac-complish much. In John 14:18 Jesus reminds us “I will not leave you as orphans, but I will come to you.”

None of us is in this alone. The Lord is with us to help us as we fulfill our prophetic mission given us at Bap-tism, to share the knowledge and the love of God, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, resist and drive out evil in our midst. Father Chris

We received a new directive from the Archdiocesan Office of Risk Management concerning this year’s Flu Epidemic. So I am suspending the reception of the Eucharist in the cup and the Sign of Peace until the Easter Vigil assuming the epidemic is over by then.

During the winter months — if Methuen schools are

closed due to snow or ice — there will be NO 7:00 am

Mass and the parish office will be closed.

With cold and flu season upon us, we ask that you take a few precau-tions this winter.

If you have a cold or the flu please do not receive Holy Communion from the cup and during the “kiss” of peace, just give a nod or a smile instead of a hug or handshake. Hopefully this winter will not be a bad one for colds and the flu. Let’s all keep healthy.
