Catalog Description of the Program

Sociology is the systematic study of the

organization, dynamics and consequences of social life. The scope of the discipline is as broad and diverse as social life itself. The Sociology major is designed to give students the ability to analyze the world around them, its peoples, and their

institutions. The program will stress

interdisciplinarity and the multicultural, global perspective which is the hallmark of Channel Islands programs. Students will develop their abilities to think criticall, and to use the empirircal and qualitative methodologies of the discipline to engage in the systematic study of human social interaction and institutions. The Sociology major will prepare students for further study and for entry into a variety of professional paths. The major will equip them with applied skills so that they can work with various social agencies. Majors will practice civic engagement and experiential learning, and faculty will use these experiences in their courses to promote the other goals of the program.

PROPOSED PROGRAM Name of Degree Program

Major in Sociology

Catalog Description of the Program

Sociology is the systematic study of the

organization, dynamics and consequences of social life. The scope of the discipline is as broad and diverse as social life itself. THE SUBJECT MATTER OF SOCIOLOGY RANGES FROM THE INTIMATE FAMILY TO THE HOSTILE MOB, FROM CRIME TO CULTS, FROM THE DIVISIONS OF INEQUITIES OF RACE, ETHNICITY, NATIONALITY, GENDER AND CLASS TO THE BELIEFS IN A COMMON CULTURE, AND FROM WORK TO LEISURE AND SPORT. The Sociology major is designed to give students the ability to analyze the world around them. The program stressES THE MISSION OF CSUCI: WE

VALUE interdisciplinarity and WE EMPHASIZE THE multicultural, global perspective which is the hallmark of CSU Channel Islands programs. GRADUATES OF THE SOCIOLOGY PROGRAM WILL BE WELL-TRAINED IN THE empirical methodologies of the discipline to engage in the systematic study of human social interaction and institutions. SUMMARY OF CHANGES

1) I have moved SOC/POLS/PSY 203 (to SOC/POLS/PSY 303) from a lower division to upper division requirement in the discipline reflecting the course modification filed this fall. That

effectively means that students have a 6 unit lower division requirement that they can easily meet at the local community colleges before they transfer to us.

2) I added new courses in Sociology approved by the curriculum committee that are designed to give our students flexibility as we build the major, and I also added the new cross-listed course (as SOC 332) as an elective in sociology.

3) I have cut PSY/SPED 345 Individuals with Disabilities in Society as an approved elective for the sociology major.

JUSTIFICATION

1) The 2006-2007 catalog should reflect the new and modified courses proposed and

approved in the fall, 2005 term. It is especially vital that SOC/POLS/PSY 303 appear as an upper division required course to eliminate any confusion that students may have that their freshman or sophomore level statistics course can substitute for SOC 303.

2) See above.

3) Based on the course description and where this particular course is housed, I don't feel it is an appropriate elective for the sociology major. Students may wish to take the course for elective credit outside the major.
