PerkinElmer understands your screening needs

PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences is the world’s premier screening company with more than 20 years experience, and a broad knowledge at all levels, understanding the nature of health care infrastructures as well as the practical needs of laboratories. As a total solution provider, a particular strength of the company is the design and implementation of software to co-ordinate the various activities of the screening laboratory. Evidence of the trust that users place in PerkinElmer’s understanding of their specifi c needs is provided by the accelerating number of new installations in most parts of the world.

Innovative information technology tools and methodologies

Trusted data management software is key to the success of screening, and as the volume of testing grows, the more complex the data management becomes. In particular the arrival of tandem mass spectrometry places a demand that a laboratory’s software be able to support the mission critical reguirements of modern neonatal and prenatal screening programs. PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences’ innovative information technology tools and methodologies meet each screening laboratory’s process and business requirements. The successful implementation hinges upon our understanding the customer’s existing screening workfl ow, business processes and expectations and in creating an environment conducive to teamwork and cooperation.

There are increasing pressures to include a wider range of metabolic disorders and genetic tests in screening programs. Specimen Gate® is a scalable system which

can be adapted to different sizes of implementations, varying from only a few analytes and terminals to a full fl edged screening program incorporating a large number of MS/ MS based analytes. Implementation models are available and can be custom built based on the specifi c workfl ow and testing menus of individual laboratories.

Specimen Gate integrates activities within the laboratory and offi ce processes to provide a single, consistent electronic record for each infant. The process begins with ‘specimen receiving’ where blood and demographic cards linked via barcodes are separated to enter their respective processes. Upon completion, a single laboratory report is produced and sent to the designated provider for each specimen. For records that require special activities, such as UNSATs and risk cases, a case is created and followed through to completion.

All of this sensitive patient information is at all times held in the secure enterprise grade Microsoft SQL Server database, and guarded through the Specimen Gate Security System which is built upon the user authentication features offered by Microsoft Windows Security. Specimen Gate customization is implemented using Microsoft’s VBA programming language, the same non-proprietary and familiar macro language encountered in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Offi ce products.

Contract and Project Team Meetings

This process establishes the delivery contract, defi nes the scope of work and deliverables for both parties and defi nes the anticipated project timeline.

We work with our customers to develop an effective implementation plan that defi nes and delegates responsibilities.

d cooperation at all stages

Process Discovery and Mapping

At an early stage PerkinElmer technical experts meet with the client representatives. These meetings are critical since they allow our staff to conduct interviews, inspect the facility, and review records, instrument data fi les and relevant reports.

Using the data and notes compiled from our customer interaction, the PerkinElmer team develops detailed process documentation, which accurately describes the laboratory workfl ow from specimen receiving to reporting and follow-up. This documentation is then used as the specifi cation sheet for PerkinElmer engineers who carry out the agreed confi guration and customization tasks.

Design and delivery

Working closely with our customer, we design and deliver a robust system that can grow and refl ect changing business rules without altering the existing system or relying on custom coding.

User Training

Prior to the system going live, the PerkinElmer project team provides the appropriate on-site user training to give end users the knowledge needed for their new LIMS responsibilities.

“GO LIVE” Stage

The “Go Live” stage is the point at which the fi nal Specimen Gate system is activated for routine clinical use. The project milestone is a system acceptance document, which acknowledges that the system is installed and implemented as agreed upon.
