HOW TO APPLY SPIRALOCK?

„

Replace standard threaded nut or threaded hole

with the Spiralock thread form and eliminate all

other thread locking devices!

Spiralock Corporation has re-engineered the standard

(female) internal thread form and added a unique

30-degree wedge ramp at the root of the thread.

This

unidirectional internal thread form, called Spiralock

®

,

mates

with standard 60-degree male thread fasteners.

The wedge ramp allows the bolt to spin freely relative to

the female threads until clamp load is applied. At that

point, the crests of the standard male thread form are

drawn tightly against the wedge ramp, eliminating radial

clearances and creating a continuous spiral line contact

along the entire length of the thread engagement. This

continuous line contact spreads the clamp force more

evenly over all the engaged threads, improving joint

fatigue life as well as the integrity of the threaded joint.

MATES WITH STANDARD MALE FASTENER

The Spiralock thread form is designed to mate with a standard 2A/3A fractional or 6g/6h metric male fastener.

TORQUE/TENSION RELATIONSHIP

The Spiralock thread form design creates a helical line of contact between the crest of the bolt threads and its

30-degree wedge ramp. In order to generate similar joint tension as compared to 60-degree threads, the

Spiralock threaded joint generally requires 10% - 20% greater torque due to the brinelling of male and female

threads as well as the slight elastic deformation of the male thread.

Although higher torque is required in all Spiralock threaded joints, the increase in required torque will vary

depending on the types of materials being used (nut, bolt, joint, etc.). This torque/tension relationship should

be evaluated in the actual joint to determine the proper torque required to develop the specified tension.

Static testing by the Goddard Space Flight Center has shown that Spiralock offers a very consistent pattern of

friction, especially when the threads are lubricated. Specifically, non-lubricated Spiralock threads had a

coefficient of friction or k-Factor range of 0.12-0.36, while lubricated threads had a k-Factor range of 0.08-0.13.

Spiralock’s more consistent friction factor directly relates to a more consistent joint tension or preload.

RESISTANT TO VIBRATION LOOSENING

Test Parameters: ¼-28 nut run @ 1200 cycles/minute of transverse movement with +/-0.033 amplitude.

Goddard Space Flight Center determined that the Spiralock thread form was the only product that could

withstand the vibrations imposed by the Space Shuttle's solid rocket boosters. The most severe vibration tests

did not loosen the nuts when they were subjected to both high amplitude sine and random tests, even tests

that were ten times the specifications for the Space Shuttle did not loosen the Spiralock fasteners.

Extensive testing on Junkers

transverse vibration equipment

has proven that the Spiralock

internal locking thread form

outperforms other thread locking

devices. In fact - unlike other

locking devices, which lost

preload within the first minute of

testing - Spiralock remained tight

until the bolts failed due to

fatigue.

LOAD DISTRIBUTION

Research studies performed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of

Technology and others have confirmed that the load carried by Spiralock threads is much more uniform than

the standard 60-degree threads. Additionally, they show that the percentage of load on the first engaged

thread produced with a Spiralock tap is significantly lower, 24% versus 64% with five thread engagement.

Spiralock Thread

Standard 60º Thread

The uniform loading eliminates the load concentration at the first engaged thread, thereby reducing joint

failures due to shearing and improving product performance. Furthermore, the Spiralock threaded joint

eliminates transverse motion that causes loosening under vibration. Additionally, the Spiralock thread form

distributes the joint load in a radial direction versus axial loading with the 60-degree threads, thus taking

advantage of the material hoop strength and significantly reducing the chance of failure due to shear.

FATIGUE LIFE

Testing performed on 1/4-28

Spiralock fasteners in

conjunction with NAS624-32

bolts has shown that Spiralock

can enhance fatigue life 300%

over standard fasteners. The

even load distribution with

Spiralock consistently reduces

the stress concentration that

leads to fatigue failures.

Installation

Instructions

Spiralock

®

1. Drill the hole

Select drill size from the table.

2. Tap the hole

With special insert tap.

3. Fit the insert

1. Select the appropriateinsert key. Slide the insert on to the key so that the tang of the insert engages in the driving slot at the forward end.

2. Apply assembly to the tapped hole.

Avoiding a downward load on the tang,

wind in the insert until the top coil is no less than half a coil below the top of the tapped hole. They key stems supplied for thread inserts up to and including M4 are stepped to prevent forcing of the tang during fitting.

Note: When ordering stems for these sizes, the length of the insert should be specified.

4. Break off tang

For insert sizes up to M6 or ¼ inch use the punch provided to remove the tang. Locate punch on tang and give sharp downward blow with a light hammer. For insert sizes above M6 or ¼ inch, the insert key may be used to remove the tang. First, turn the key so that it no longer engages in the tang of the insert. A sharp downward blow with a light hammer will remove the tang. Do not attempt to twist the tang off in any manner with the key.

ISO Metric tapped holes comply with BS 4377. Unified tapped holes comply with BS 3409.

L Maximum fitted length of insert

T Minimum full thread depth for blind holes and minimum metal thickness for through holes

Spiralock wire inserts are manufactured from 300 series austenitic stainless steel, cold rolled to an ultimate tensile strength of approximately 200,000 to 250,000 psi (43-50 Rc); surface finish of 8-16 microinches.

Spiralock wire inserts are manufactured in accordance with MS21209 and MIL-I-8846. Cross section of wire is unique in order to accommodate the Spiralock wedge ramp.

Spiralock wire inserts are installed into STI tapped holes that conform to MS33537E, BS 3409 and BS 4377.

Spiralock wire inserts accept standard UN 2A/3A and ISO 4h/6h bolts.

Cadmium plating is per QQ-P-416, Type II, 0.0001” thick. For lubrication a small amount of liquid zinc chromate per Fed. Spec. TT-P-1757 is recommended.
