April, the SFCC Graphic Design Club took off for Seattle to attend the American Institute of Graphic Arts’ (AIGA) annual Reality Check event. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Reality Check is an event designed to provide students and newcomers to the field an opportunity to receive constructive portfolio feedback from experienced design professionals. Reality Check is the time to show your work and ideas to some of the best art directors and designers in the Northwest. Hands down, this is the opportunity to show your work and ideas (completed or in-progress) to some of the best art directors and designers. Students are encouraged to bring 7-10 pieces and let reviewers check your understanding of the basic principles and ideas behind creating a powerful design portfolio. Students from all over Washington State met with Seattle designers for some one-on-one feedback on portfolio pieces. Sometimes positive, sometimes brutal, the feedback was eagerly received by students who walked away from the event with a more clear idea of what it takes to make professional design.

Along with the portfolio review SFCC students toured DDB Seattle, Hornall Anderson Design, Mercury Cloud and the EMP (Experience Music Project).

Spokane Advertising Federation hosts “A Red Shoe Event” Holiday Party and Art Auction every December to raise money for the Toni M. Robideaux Scholarship Fund, which honors her contributions to the Spokane advertising, art and design communities.

The Toni M. Robideaux Scholarship Fund recognizes and rewards student achieve-ment and excellence in advertising arts. All funds generated go directly to students currently enrolled in visual and performing arts, advertising, graphic design, photography, music or marketing communication programs at accredited local / regional colleges and universities.

This year’s event was held November 7, 2006 at The Spokane Club. Each year local designers are asked to create works of art from unfinished furniture. The SFCC Graphic Design Club Officers: Dan McElfish, Tansy Mitchell, Joel Ubaldo, Art Mercz and Ronda Hutchings created this year’s chair to be auctioned off.
