General Information

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

The College welcomes applications from qualified international applicants.

International (non-EU) students must comply with Irish immigration requirements and must

present either a student visa or a letter of permission to remain in Ireland issued by the

Immigration Section of the Department of Justice.

Non-EU students will be required to pay a more substantial fee than EU students for each

year of their attendance at BCFE.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

All courses are delivered through English. Students are advised that to benefit from their

chosen course they should be proficient in written and spoken English, and may be required

to provide a certified qualification of proficiency in English. A list of approved English

language qualifications is available from the College office.

FEES

There are no tuition fees for Irish or EU citizens undertaking PLC Courses.

However all students are required to pay a Resource Fee, which covers registration by

certifying bodies, student services, books and equipment where the item purchased

becomes your personal property.

Non-EU citizens will be required to pay a more substantial fee, as laid down by the

Department of Education.

A deposit of 40 euro will be required to secure a place on a course. This will not be refunded

if you do not avail of the course. If you do enrol on the course, the amount will be held as a

down payment on the charges outlined above.

The charges for certification/registration with certifying bodies may vary, depending on the

certification authority involved.

GRANTS

PLC students taking FETAC level 5/6 and BTEC National and Higher National Diploma

courses can apply for a maintenance grant. Students must fulfil nationality, residency and

means requirements. The level of grant aid varies according to age and the distance from

the student’s home to the college. The closing date is usually late August. Students

commencing courses in September 2013 who are in receipt of VTOS or BTEA will be

ineligible for PLC Grant assistance. Students apply on-line www.studentfinance.ie. There is

MATURE STUDENTS

Applications from mature students are welcomed to all courses.

Normal entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+) depending on their

life experience and education to date.

VTOS (Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme)

Certain applicants will be eligible for the VTOS Scheme - If a student is over 21 and in

receipt of one of a range of social welfare payments for at least six months before joining the

course he/she can attend College full-time and still retain all payments. No fees will be

charged and small extra payments for travel and food will also be available. Check with your

Social Welfare Office for eligibility.

BTEA (Back to Education Allowance)

If a student is over 18, and in receipt of one of a range of Social Welfare payments for a

period of 3 months before the course commences, he/she may be eligible for this allowance.

GUIDANCE & COUNSELLING

A Guidance and Counselling service is available to students to assist them to derive

maximum benefit from their time in the College. Personal, educational and careers

counselling is available. BCFE Guidance and Counselling receives support from CDVEC

Psychological Services.

DISABILITY SERVICE

The College welcomes applications from students with disabilities, medical conditions and

special needs. The Disability Support Service provides advice, information and support to

such students, who should notify the College of any special needs on the Application Form.

The provision of this information enables the College to make timely provision for their

special needs, and the responsibility rests with the student to make the Disability Officer

aware of such needs.

We would advise any student with special needs to contact the Disability Support Officer at

application or interview time or when a course offer has been accepted for information

regarding possible support services. Early contact with the Disability Support Officer will

facilitate the provision of such services from the beginning of the College year. Phone

number available from the College Office.

Course Deferral

Course deferral occurs when a learner seeks to defer the college place they were offered. A

written application, requesting permission to commence the programme in the following

academic year, must be made to the Principal before 31st August. The learner must include,

in the application, evidence of meeting the entry requirements.

Delayed Programme Completion

Delayed Programme Completion may arise where a learner has registered for a programme

but does not complete the programme for any reason.

When a learner becomes aware that he/she will not complete the current year they may

apply to delay completion of the programme, that is to return the following September and

complete in the following academic year.

There is no automatic right to a delayed programme completion. A written application must

be made to the principal explaining the specific circumstances. Each case is examined on its

merits by the college. Permission will not be granted to delay completion for more than one

year. Learners recommencing are liable for the full resource fees.

Repeating a Year

In certain cases, at the end of an academic year, a learner who has not completed the

programme may apply to repeat the year. There is no automatic right to repeat. Each case is

examined on its merits by the college.

STUDENT DESTINATIONS

Our yearly Student Destinations Survey reveals that approximately half of our graduates

progress to further/higher education within BCFE or in Irish or UK higher education

institutions. A similar number go directly into employment and many of these continue their

studies part time.

RESOURCE ROOM/LIBRARY

A resource room/study area is available during College hours, containing relevant

publications, journals, newspapers, college prospectuses etc.

EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES

The College is equipped to a high standard with computers and the relevant software

necessary for the delivery of the various courses. The purpose-built Media Building contains

state-of-the-art television studios and editing facilities, performance space, computer rooms,

etc.

TRANSPORT

Direct bus routes that stop outside Ballyfermot College are as follows,

From O’Connell Street, the number 40 bus on route to Liffey Valley.

From Aston Quay, the number 79a on route to Parkwest Industrial estate.

From Tallaght (The Square shopping centre) the number 76 on route to Chapelizod

and 76a on route to Blanchardstown centre.

From Sandymount, the number 18 on route to Palmerstown.

Connecting bus routes to Ballyfermot,

From Lucan, the numbers 25, 25a, 25b bus on route to City Centre. From Leixlip the

numbers 66, 66a, 66b bus on route to City Centre.

From Celbridge/Maynooth the number 67 bus on route to City Centre.

All the above bus routes, pass by the footbridge in Palmerstown, connecting them to

the 18 bus route. Or continue to Chapelizod and a short walk to the college.

ACCOMMODATION

The College will provide on request a list of accommodation for students from outside the

Dublin area, and will assist such students in searching for accommodation when necessary.

This list is provided as a service and the College cannot take responsibility for the

accommodation provided. All arrangements are between the provider and the student.

CANTEEN

The student canteen is open from 8.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. and provides

breakfast, sandwiches, rolls, soups, salads and pastries, snacks, hot and cold drinks etc.

Stationery is also on sale in the Canteen, including writing materials, CDs etc.

SPORT

The College has representative teams, which participate in VEC competitions.

STUDENT LIAISON OFFICER

The College's Student Liaison Officer offers support to students in working with the College

administration and facilitates student activities, societies, and the Student Council.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON AWARDS AND THE AMALGAMATION OF FOUR

STATUTORY AGENCIES IN IRELAND

QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland) is a state agency established by the Quality

Assurance and Qualifications (Education and Training) Act 2012 with a board appointed by

the Minister for Education

and Skills.

The functions of QQI include those previously carried out by the Further Education and

Training Awards

Council (FETAC);the Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC); the Irish

Universities

Quality Board (IUQB) and the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland

AWARDS GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & PROGRESSION

FETAC LEVEL 5 AWARD:

Entry Requirements

5 passes in Leaving Certificate/LCVP or Merit in Leaving Certificate Applied or

FETAC Level 4 Award or equivalent. The academic entry requirements may be waived for

mature applicants (21+)

Progression:

FETAC Level 5 graduates are eligible to apply to FETAC Level 6 courses (where available).

Graduates may also apply to BTEC Higher National Diploma courses in BCFE (Merit profile

required).

FETAC Major awards offer progression to courses in HEIs on a competitive basis through the

Common Awards System (CAS). Students will generate a new set of points which will allow

them to compete for courses along with Leaving Certificate students. Other HEIs will reserve

a quota for FETAC student on linked courses for example the HEIs offering nursing degrees

will reserve a number of places for students with a FETAC major award in pre-nursing

studies and will allow FETAC students to compete for these with their points. A student doing

a major award can generate a maximum of 400 points.

Leaving Certificate/LCVP with a minimum of 2 HCs /OAs and three passes or equivalent or

FETAC level 5 award with a merit profile or BTEC National Diploma with a merit profile. The

Progression:

FETAC Level 6 courses are designed to facilitate entry to the appropriate area

of work at supervisory level. However, it may also be possible to gain advanced

entry to relevant courses in Institutes of Technology on an individual basis, contact IT

Admissions Offices for information.

BTEC NATIONAL DIPLOMA (National Diploma In Media)

Progression:

Graduates of the BTEC National Diploma (merit profile) are eligible to progress

to BTEC Higher National Diploma courses in Media in BCFE, and to first year of degree

courses in the UK.

BTEC HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA

Note : “The closest comparable Irish award to the National Diploma is the Higher Certificate

Leaving Certificate/LCVP with a minimum of 2 HCs /OAs and three passes or equivalent or

FETAC level 5 award with a merit profile or BTEC National Diploma with a merit profile. The

academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+)

NB. Individual courses may have specific additional requirements (see course descriptions

Progression:

Holders of BTEC Higher National Diplomas may gain entry to second or third year in certain

Institutes of Technology depending on subject match and academic achievement. They may

also continue their studies in the UK System, sometimes gaining exemption from one or two

years of degree courses.

DEGREE COURSES

Entry Requirements:

BA (Honours) in Media Production Management (certified by Dublin City University.

This is a one-year progression course for students who have successfully completed a

Higher National Diploma in a Media-related area.

BA (Honours) in Animation (certified by University of Dundee, Scotland)

This is a two-year progression course for students who have successfully completed a Higher

National Diploma in Animation

Progression:

Graduates of the BA in Media Production Management progress to post graduate studies in

DCU, TCD, NUIM, DIT and in universities in the UK.

Art Design and Graphics

ART DESIGN AND THREE DIMENSIONAL STUDIES (PORTFOLIO PREPARATION COURSE)

COURSE CODE: ADT Duration: 1 year

This course is a one year portfolio course with an emphasis on three dimensional work, from both design and fine art

sculptural aspects. Students are taught the necessary skills to research all ideas visually through drawing, painting,

photography, sculpture and design. All projects are purposely broad enough to allow students to build up a portfolio suitable for their particular interest whether it is fine art, design or model-making.

Course Content:

Appreciation of Art, Craft and Design, Communications, Drawing, Figure Studies, Image Processing, Painting, Fine Art and Graphics Photo Imaging, Sculpture, Spatial Design, Work Experience.

Entry Requirements:

Five passes in Leaving Certificate/LCVP or a merit in Leaving Certificate Applied or QQI level 4 Certificate. Art Portfolio (See guidelines). The academic entry requirements may be waived

for mature applicants (21+). ADM, AGP and ADT are portfolio preparation courses. Certification:

QQI Level 5 Certificate in Art 5M1985 Progression:

Portfolio Guidelines:

Applicants should bring to interview a selection of 12 to 18 pieces of recent observational drawings and paintings in a range of media (pencil, charcoal, pastel and paint). Applicants should also include photographs of any 3D they have made. Sketchbooks or notebooks can be included.

Art Design and Graphics

HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN ILLUSTRATION

COURSE CODE: AIH Duration: 2 year

Illustration is a highly specialized discipline within the field of Visual Communication. In our unique course, the students will not only focus on developing their drawing, painting and media skills, but will also learn to regard their work in terms of

commercial viability. Students will be actively encouraged to develop a range of illustrative styles and explore the entire gamut of illustrative practice, including editorial,

archaeological, technical, advertising, instructional, fashion, as well as illustration for graphic novels, storyboards, greeting

cards, websites, book covers and children's books. Working on tailored and competition briefs will be a key component of the course. Workshops by visiting lecturers working in the field of illustration will take place throughout the course.

Course Content: Year 1

Illustrative Style, Materials and Processes for Illustration, Media, Materials and Techniques for Illustration, Representational Illustration, Principles of Life Drawing for Illustrators, Contextual and Cultural Referencing in Art and Design, Fine Art Printmaking, Digital Image Creation and Development.

Year 2

Comics and Sequential Art, Refined Life Drawing for Illustrators, Expressing Illustrative Style, Imaginative and Conceptual Illustration, Professional Practice for Illustrators, Layout, Design and Typography, Art, Design and Media Practice within the Digital Environment, Critical Studies in Art and Design.

Leaving Certificate/LCVP with a minimum of HC3 in Art and one other HC /OA and three passes or equivalent or QQI level 5 award in Art with a merit profile or BTEC National Diploma with a merit profile. The academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+) Art Portfolio displaying a very high level of drawing skills (See guidelines).

Certification: HND in Illustration

This award is made by the UK awarding body BTEC Pearson and is not, at present, placed on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)

A Higher National Diploma is recognised by the QQI as being comparable to the Higher Certificate at NFQ Level 6.

QQI Comparability Statement

Progression:

Students will complete this course with an illustration portfolio ready to begin in the industry. Viable progression includes freelance illustration, design studios, newspapers and magazine publications, publishers, architectural firms, and museum work. Many students may choose to continue their art education to degree level.

Portfolio Guidelines:

Please bring to the interview a professionally presented portfolio of recent and original works including

Drawing: Life and Observational both showing strong use of line, tone, texture and composition. Please include a wide range of media and a variety of subject matter.

HND DIPLOMA IN VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS (GRAPHIC DESIGN)

COURSE CODE: AGH Duration: 2 year

The Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design at Ballyfermot College of Further Education is an intense, rigorous and professional programme, which aims to mould learners into confident and skilled graphic design practitioners. This Higher National Diploma has been running with great success for nearly thirteen years and has developed an outstanding reputation for both the quality of the programme and it’s graduates. The course has been designed to give learners a unique and professional portfolio of work, coupled with the technical and creative skills to go straight into industry or apply for advanced entry to either 2nd or 3rd year of an honours degree programme in Ireland or the United Kingdom. Students explore a wide range of visual communication techniques, with a particular emphasis placed on strong conceptual thinking and innovative design solutions. This

design process is enhanced further with intense practical software and digital technology classes. Students may have no previous computer experience before beginning this programme, but upon completion of the course students will have a comprehensive understanding of how to effectively and appropriately apply technology in the design process. Learners use Apple Mac computers in class and receive full training in the operating system, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, QuarkXPress, Flash and Dreamweaver. Topics introduced to students on this course include image manipulation, web design, typography, ideas generation, illustration, corporate identity, packaging, advertising among others. The ability to draw well lies at the heart of all art and design programmes and so plays an important part on the HND in Graphic Design; we encourage learners to integrate traditional art & design techniques with digital media wherever appropriate in the design process. Students are given classes in traditional illustration techniques and traditional design craft skills.

ART, GRAPHICS AND PRINTMAKING - VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS (PORTFOLIO PREPARATION COURSE)

COURSE CODE: AGP Duration: 1 year

This course enables students to create and produce an interesting and dynamic portfolio of work. It offers students a balance between traditional methods of art making such as drawing, painting, print making, figures studies, alongside digital photography and computer graphic design, resulting in an integrated portfolio. A one week field trip takes place in the first term to stimulate the students' research work. Throughout the year various artists and designer visit the college to talk and guide students. Many graduates progress on to NCAD, DIT, IADT and further afield.

Design Skills, Drawing, Graphic Design Skills, Printmaking, Appreciation of Art, Craft and Design, Communications, Drawing, Figure Studies, Painting, Traditional Black and White Photography, Work Experience.

ART, DESIGN AND MIXED MEDIA - (PORTFOLIO PREPARATION COURSE)

COURSE CODE: ADM Duration: 1 year

This course involves studio and location work. It enables students to develop drawing and observational skills and to explore creativity and personal expression through a broad range of creative processes including Sculpture, Mixed Media, Printmaking, and Fine Art based Photography. All projects are broad enough to allow students to develop a portfolio suitable to their particular interests - Fine Art, Design, Photography etc. A one art week educational trip outside of Ireland takes place in the second term to inform, develop and stimulate the students' knowledge of the arts. Work experience takes place in the first term. It involves one week location drawing, a visiting artist's talk and workshop, and one week in studio 3D work. In the final term students can choose to engage with a community linked art project, making artworks in response to the local community.

HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN FIBRE ART (TEXTILE/FINE APPLIED ARTS)

COURSE CODE: AFH Duration: 2 year

This course offers the student the opportunity to explore the principles and practices of textile fibre art under the umbrellas of fine art, design and craft. Through visual observation skills the evolvement of understanding of design refinement and conceptual resolution are achieved. Photography for Textile Fibre Art develops an understanding of the discipline and its capacity for conceptual resolution and recording. Through

critical studies informed support and research skills for personal work is attained. Design Craft and Textile skills are developed in a standard of professional practice. Competition briefs are built into the course structure and support computer skills are practiced. In the Professional Practice module- visiting lecturers engaged in various professional capacities within the Textile Fibre Art discipline deliver lectures and workshops throughout the course duration.

Irish School of Animation

BA (HONS) VISUAL MEDIA IN ANIMATION / GAME DESIGN

COURSE CODE: CDA Duration: 2 year

CDA - A: BA (Hons) Visual Media – Animation Pathway This course allows the students to develop and integrate their technical and academic skills in a structured way. It aims to develop in the student a balance between the conceptualist, the artist, the storyteller and the technician. At honours level the learning is largely self-directed and the students are required to produce a collaborative animated film. CDA - G: BA (Hons) Visual Media – Game Design Pathway This course allows the students to develop and integrate their technical

and academic skills in a structured way. It aims to develop in the student a balance between game designer and game producer. At honours level the learning is largely self-directed and the students are required to produce a collaborative game.
