ABOUT TEN80 EDUCATION

Ten80 is a team of STEM, education and business professionals dedicated to cultivating a STEM Ecosystem that unites and inspires the next generation of entrepreneurial thinkers and innovators, empowering ALL students to thrive in a world of constant innovation.

Ten80’s first engineer-educator teams formed in the late 1990’s to champion Project-Based Learning that Doesn’t Forget the Learning through professional development. Over the last 20+ years, through NSF grants, longitudinal studies, and close partnerships with K-12 educators, Ten80 has developed a comprehensive, data-driven philosophy and framework * for STEM education that can engage and serve ALL students.

Today, Ten80 is a leader in STEM Education, named one of four Exemplary and Ready-to-Scale Initiatives by Change the Equation & STEMWorks. Ten80 partners with K-12 schools and organizations to initiate a comprehensive STEM system or strengthen existing programs through these areas of focus: 1. Curriculum = CLUB, CLASS or CAMP formats

2. Ten80 Challenge Competitions that motivate students and reinforce the habits of mind, concepts and skills cultivated through the curriculum. Ten80 Challenge teams can qualify to compete in the National STEM League (NSL).

3. Professional Development

4. Custom Event & Experience Production

Ten80 = 1,080 = 3 × 360

Ten80 represents a stronger society through the promise of STEM Education for all. Ten80’s logo is a Venn diagram. A Venn diagram uses closed curves to represent complex, interdependent relationships among sets. Each closed curve is 360 degrees.

Curriculum & Competitions

Ten80’s STEM Challenges Curricula and competitions help students (and

educators) cultivate 21st Century Skills through team-oriented challenges. Every Ten80 STEM Challenge addresses a different set of concepts and skills. All of them help students understand and actively participate in the innovation process that drives today’s economy, civil society and public institutions.

* Ten80’s Innovation Framework

Upper elementary and secondary programs are based on a framework of innovation. Innovation is a process that purposefully combines these four elements: (1) the engineering process that requires (2) specific content knowledge and skills, the (3) enterprise process which is essentially prototyping a business and (4) leadership principles that are necessary to turn truly innovative ideas into reality.

Custom Event & Experience Production

Ten80 works with industry partners like the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and Specialty Equipment Manufacturing Association (SEMA) to reach tens of thousands of young people.  Together we identify the skills embedded in a partner’s priorities and activities, and position those skills as the centerpiece for valuable learning experiences.

The Storyline & Challenge

Students integrate electrical, mechanical and computer systems, the three systems at the core of every robot, to create a Robo Racecar. In the Autonomous Vehicle Challenge, the Robo Racecar

tackles a series of challenges that parallel driverless car operations.

Curriculum Overview

The Ten80 AV Challenge introduces students to coding through physical computing, with the promise of an exciting culminating competition. It starts with the hands-on electromechanical assembly of a 1/16th scale car. Through installation and experimentation with a series of sensors and coding, the car executes tasks as a self-driving vehicle. As a final extension, the sensors and code are integrated to create a vehicle that’s performance resembles the fully autonomous cars that are navigating today’s roads and highways.

To complete the Ten80 AV Challenge as a STEM Innovation experience, students are invited to practice their Enterprise skills, through teamwork and collaboration. The final goal is not only to compete with the car they have automated, but to showcase their business that centers on that vehicle, complete with branding and marketing projects such as logo design and elevator pitches.

Competition Overview (Optional)

AV Challenge teams can compete locally in Face-to-Face (F2F) Ten80 Challenge competitions and in an online Points Race. Winners can qualify to advance to the National STEM League Finals.

Technology

After assembling the 1/16 scale Robo Racecar

chassis, students add electronics, sensors and a tiny computer called a micro:bit. The micro:bit is a Microsoft product that can be easily programmed from any device with a web browser and a USB port. Beginners can start with drag-and-drop block programming through the Makecode interface. Makecode is available for offline use so an active internet connection is not required. More advanced users can program it using the Python-based text editor in Makecode. At first students use two micro:bits to program the car to operate remotely (micro:bits communicate with each other). They then add sensors to automate the car as it navigates a course. An enticing goal gives the learning a motivating purpose!

The Rogue Racer is an automated 1/10 scale

Ten80 Racing Challenge car. Students can automate the car with a custom Arduino-based design and code, or start with the Add-On kit provided by Ten80.

Rovers- Come on over! Rover teams from

past seasons are invited to register for the AV Challenge to compete in 2020-21. (Rover Curriculum not currently offered for this season.)

Standards

The Ten80 AV Challenge is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics & ELA, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Computer Science Teacher’s Association (CSTA) Level 3 standards.

OVERVIEW: IN-PERSON AND REMOTE OPTIONS

Ten80 AV Challenge students can collaborate and compete through the power of technology, whether they are in the same room, in their own homes, or in another state. It can be the final project for one student, or the ultimate teamwork experience for a class or club.

The curriculum is designed for versatile implementation.

Curriculum is modular and allows students to complete activities in any order. It allows each team to design its own path to success through specialization, or through a cross-training approach that includes exposure for each student to every role.

Materials kits support diverse teaching environments, ranging from a classroom gathering of students, to one student at home, to a team of 5-10 students collaborating and sharing materials sequentially in different locations.

Customize the team materials by choosing one or more of each of these specialization kits: electromechanical (assemble the car), coding and sensors (micro:bit, motor shield, sensors, etc.), and just coding (micro:bit).

Additional team roles that are supported through the curriculum and competition, but that do NOT require special materials, include team manager (project management and business modeling), graphic designers, data-driven designers, and marketing pitch presenters.

Accessible project management tools help students meet goals, whether collaborating in-person or remotely.

Though there are many complex proprietary systems for project management, lots of professionals still rely on spreadsheets to build and track project plans and progress. A customizable spreadsheet with tasks lists, work breakdown structures (WBS) and Gantt chart are provided in the curriculum. A project management unit helps students and educators use them to successfully meet goals on time and on budget, while also generating points for the online Points Race.

Web-based and in-person competitions motivate, inform and reward students.

Ten80 students have participated in the annual online Points Race for over a decade. Points Race teams show what they have learned though the Ten80 curriculum and collaboration with teammates using an online dashboard.

While in-person gatherings are limited or prohibited, face-to-face competitions, including head-to-head races, will be organized using web-based platforms and technology for virtual sharing in real-time.

Curriculum Overview

Students fly, configure, reverse engineer, design, build and code.

The UAV Challenge curriculum begins with Aeronautics and Flight units that guide students through the systematic investigation of aeronautics principles and flight for a variety of industries (ex. film vs. inspection).

The Hacker’s units leads students through a series of focus lessons that reverse engineer how each system of the UAV brain works. The culminating challenge is to replace the stock system with a customized Arduino-based flight controller. In working with electrical components, students develop skills like soldering and critical thinking through troubleshooting.

Key focus lessons dive into concepts such as aerodynamics, electricity, computer programming and physical laws of motion.

As with all Student STEM Challenges, these concepts and skills are cultivated through the framework of innovation. Students model a business or organization that applies the technology to improve society.

Competition Overview (Optional)

UAV teams can compete locally in Face-to-Face (F2F) Ten80 Challenge competitions and in an online Points Race. Winners can qualify to advance to the National STEM League Finals.

Standards

All programs align to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The Student UAV Challenge also aligns to CSTA level 3 standards.

Technology

Students learn to fly a basic remote-controlled quadcopter, and investigate the principles of aeronautics using a powered paper airplane that’s piloted using a phone app.

With the Hacker’s Kit, students dive into electronics and physical computing activities that explore the major systems of the UAV’s flight control system. Ultimately they replace the stock controller with a custom version based on an Arduino microprocessor.

The Storyline & Challenge

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are driving one of the most exciting areas of innovation today. Pilots, engineers and entrepreneurial leaders are teaming up to change the way we think of videography, disaster recovery, agriculture, conservation, marketing and so much more.

After exploring basics of aeronautics and developing skills as pilots, students hack into a standard UAV brain, replace it with a custom programmable flight controller and configure it to fly different missions.

Camp

This camp-specific curriculum is organized into a 5-day format with 25-40 contact hours. Camp leaders use a hyperlinked agenda to navigate electronic and print resources, with minimal preparation time required.

What Are Team Registrations?

The purchase of Ten80 STEM Challenge currciulum includes one (or more) Team Registrations. A Team Registration allows groups of students to unite and compete against other schools (Face-to-Face and in online Points Race), and to qualify for an invitation to the NSL Finals.

Each Team Registration is represented with a team identity on the Ten80 online dashboard, where they can share ideas with other teams via the forum, swap assets such as 3-D printer time or CAD files, and participate in occasional challenges.

Registered teams are also invited to compete in Face-to-Face (F2F) competitions (remote or in-person) and the online Points Race. Local F2F competitions are free with your Ten80 registration. The online Points Race, Regional competitions, and the NSL National Finals (by invitation only) are optional add-ons.

2. KITS: CHOOSE TYPE AND QUANTITY

Returning teams are not required to purchase kits. Because the curriculum and competitions require a specific technology, materials kits are required in your startup year.

Each UAV station serves up to 3 students with a very hands-on experience or 4-6 students who divide & conquer the various aspects of operating a team. In addition to actively working with the UAV, team roles can include user interface design, graphic design, web design, marketing, public relations, project management, research & development, fabrication, etc.

3. COMPETITIONS: COLLABORATE, CREATE, COMPETE

Ten80 teams can collaborate and compete in 1-2 day Face-to-Face (F2F) Competitions (virtual or in-person) and in an online Points Race that runs from October to May each year.

Face-to-Face (F2F) Competitions: (Optional) Prepare

for Local, Regional and National Events

Whether in-person or remote, Face-to-Face (F2F) events combine the excitement of head-to-head competition with the innovative energy of a STEM Fair.

All registered Ten80 teams can compete in locally-organized Ten80 Challenge events, in remote competitions organized by Ten80’s team,

and in National STEM League (NSL) Regional competitions organized

by the iNSL, a 501(c)(3) organization. An entry fee may be required for NSL Regional competitions.

Teams earn invitations to the NSL Finals by leading in the online Ten80

Points Race or placing in sanctioned Ten80 Challenge events. The NSL Finals is hosted in late April each year, and will include remote and in-person participation in 2021.

Online Points Race: (Optional) Register Now

No Travel Required! Between October and May, student teams use an online dashboard to get feedback from remote STEM mentors and to earn points. Points categories are aligned to the Ten80 STEM Challenges curriculum so educators can use the site to stay up to date on student work.

Points Race entries are submitted between October 1st and the first week in May. A leader board celebrates teams achievements throughout the season. Points leaders are invited to the NSL Finals throughout the season. The ultimate Points Race winners are celebrated in an online awards ceremony and with custom-designed trophies shipped to their school or meeting place.

An additional fee is required. See the order form for details.

UAV Competition Categories

Ten80 Teams compete in the Intro or Hacker Series. Hackers must fly a

UAV that has a custom flight controller (see Rules & Guidelines for details). F2F categories include:

• Head-to-Head Events and time trials testing pilot agility and “finesse”. • Data-Driven Design Project

• Enterprise

– Project Planning – Pitches & Presentations

– Graphic Design, Team Identity and Vehicle Design

Computer Science Framework

Ten80’s Intro to Physical Computing curriculum bridges engineering design and computer science with business modeling and real-world applications. Students learn fundamental computational thinking and logical problem-solving skills while working with different aspects of Computer Science including coding, physical computing (i.e. software and hardware integration) and team-based project work.

Intro to Physical Computing Overview

Students develop problem-solving and computational thinking skills to develop good practices that are universal across programming languages.

In this 1-semester course, students work with a mix of off-screen simulations, drag-and-drop and text-based programming. This course uses the Arduino programming language which is based on C, a widely used programming language. All concepts are universal and not language specific.

Students will understand algorithms, binary and hexadecimal number systems, data types, decision loops, functions, sensors, and wireless communications, all of which are critical concepts in engineering and computer science. After “mastering” the software and hardware concepts and skills, including basic circuitry lessons, students engage in a culminating design project.
