STRUCTURE OF HIV THAT CAUSES AIDS

Cross-sectional schematic diagram of HIV virion. Each virion expresses 72 glycoprotein projections composed of gp120 (orange) and gp41 (light blue). Gp41 is a transmembrane molecule that crosses the lipid bilayer of the envelope. Gp120 is noncovalently associated with gp41 and serves as the viral receptor for CD4 on host cells. The viral envelope also contains some host-cell membrane proteins such as class I and class II MHC molecules. Within the envelope is the viral core, or nucleocapsid, which includes a layer of a protein called p17 (green) and an inner layer protein called p24 (yellow). The HIV genome consists of two copies of ssRNA, which are associated with two molecules of reverse transcriptase p64 (light red) and nucleoid proteins p10, a protease (red), and p32, an integrase (dark blue).

Bio Technology is a research oriented science, a combination of biology and technology covering a wide variety of subjects like genetics, bio chemistry, micro biology, immunology, virology, chemistry and Engineering and many other subjects like health and medicine, agriculture and animal husbandry, cropping system and crop management, ecology, cell biology, soil science and soil conservation, bio statistics, seed technology, plant physiology etc.

Branches & Application of Bio technology:

Today, Bio technology is a multi disciplinary activity involving chemists, biologists, engineers and many other specialists. Its scope is enormous. There are hundreds of different micro organisms able to produce fermentation products such as amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, and antibiotics.

Bio technology is playing major role in serving the mankind. Improved seed quality, improved plant varieties or developing vaccines are the latest improvements. It is widely used in food industry, enabling cattle to grow faster and produce new enzymes for making cheese. Some of the prominent areas of application of bio technology is given below.

Agriculture:

In this sector bio technology has contributed in the following improvements:- improvements in seed technology, development of crop, fruit varieties with high yield, great resistance to stresses and

higher nutritional value, increasing efficiency of nitrogen fixation in plants, vaccine production from plants.

Animal Husbandry:

This sector covers development of improved breed of animals with higher milk production, higher animal productivity, animal feed, embryo transfer, developing vaccines etc.

Health Care (Medical Biotechnology):

Application includes development of genetically engineered vaccines, DNA finger printing, immuno diagnostic kits early detection of diseases, Gene profiling, antibiotics, skin grafting etc.,

Industry:

Industrial bio technology has a wide range of applications such as extraction of metals by micro-biology methods, enrichment of ores etc. It plays a vital role in food processing, and beverage industry, bio mass and bio energy.

Aquaculture and Marine biotechnology:

Informatics:-The marriage between biology and computer science in known as Bio informatics. Bio informatics deals with various issues related to the biological data. It also covers the development of data analysis tools, modeling of biological macro molecules, and their complexes, metabolic pathways, designing of new molecules such as drugs, peptide vaccines, proteins. Bio informatics has evolved to deal with four related areas viz.

i) Handling and management of biological data, including its organization, control, linkages, analysis and so forth.

ii) Communication among people, projects and institutions engaged in the biological research and applications. The communication may include e-mail, file transfer, remote login, computer conferencing, electronic bulletin boarded or establishment of web based information resources.

iii) Organized, access, search and retrieval of biological information, documents and literature.

iv) Analysis and interpretation of the biological data through the computational approaches including visualization, mathematical modeling and development of algorithms for highly parallel processing of complex biological structures. Bio informatics may therefore be defined as a scientific discipline, that encompasses all the aspects of biological information viz acquisition, processing, storage, distribution, analysis and interpretation that combines the tools and techniques of mathematics, computer science and biology with aim of understanding the biological significance of a variety of data.

To be a technician in an industry or a research institute, you should be a B.Sc. in Biotechnology. Similarly if you have completed your M.Sc in biotechnology you may go for a research assistant both in Industry, as well as in R&D (Research & Development) institutes. Both public and private sector offer ample job opportunities in this field. In public sector the opportunities available are in administration, policy making, Research and Development and technical cadre. A person with aptitude for research can go for research and development institutes established by different ministries.

(1) The job profile of a technician is to maintain small equipments, weigh raw materials, maintain records, and clean production areas etc. For a manufacturing technician, job profile consists of manufacturing and packaging potentials and existing products and instrumentation technician has to maintain instruments / equipments.

(2) Product development officer is responsible for design, development of a given product. Documentation officer handles all activities relates to provide required document. He also needs to review & revise procedures, specification and forms.

(3) For Bio informatics specialist the prime field of work include designing, developing, evaluating, modifying computer for solving a protein structure and design programmes to evolve 3 dimentional structures of molecules, analyse existing systems and formulate logic for new systems.

(4) Market Research Analyst is entrusted the job to research and analyse company s markets, competition and product mix. As a sales representative he is responsible for providing product information and demonstration whenever required. HR manager is to handle the activities related to employment, coordinate training programmes, counseling etc.

(5) After doing Phd you can also be appointed as Research Associate, Pool officer, Research Scientists etc. in various Government funded organizations like center for scientific and Industrial Research, Department of science & Technology, Department of biotechnology. Duration of these

jobs is normally 2 to 3 years and you will be paid emoluments above 10,000 per month and other perks.

Government Initiatives in various Research project:

Through several R&D projects, demonstration, and creation of infrastructure facilities for Department of Bio Technology (DBT), established in the year 1986 has made significant achievements in growth and application of biotechnology in broad areas of agriculture, health care, animal sciences, environment and industry.

Department of Bio technology (DBT) has been interacting with more than 5000 scientists per year inorder to utilize the existing expertise of the universities and other national laboratories.

Initiatives have been taken to promote transgenic research in plants with emphasis on pest and disease resistance, Nutritional quality, silkworm genomy analysis, molecular biology of human genetic disorders, brain research, plant genome research, validation and commercialization of diagnostic kits and vaccines for various diseases, food biotechnology, bio diversity conservation and bio prospecting, setting up of micro propagation parks and biotechnology based developments in rural areas. Necessary guidelines for transgenic plants, recombinant vaccines and drugs have also been evolved.

In the Agriculture Sector, one of the latest developments is the work on transgenic coupled with prospecting new genes from our rich biodiversity which, not only improved production, but enhanced nutrine quality of our food, fruit and vegetable crops as well. Another area is animal health and productivity in which new

generation vaccines, diagnostic kits etc. are likely to lead to a major shift in healthcare for prevention. Of late Stem cell research has added a new dimension with their enormous potential for applications in cancer, auto immune deficiencies, cardio vascular and other ailments.

Genetic Engineering:

A recent off shoot of biotechnology research is genetic engineering, which involves gene splicing, recombinant DNA cloning and tissue culture technology.

Genetic Engineering, which transfers genes from one species to another has greatly enhanced the power of biotechnology. In principle genes can be transfered between any organism from a bacterium to a plant, from humans to other animals. Most importantly genetic engineering allows the manufacture of products, particularly drugs that could not be obtained in any other way. And second it can be used to create organisms, such as plant resistant to attach by insects, which do not occur in nature. The first bio technology product from genetic engineering was human insulin used in the treatment of diabetes.

Also new is the use of antibodies as drugs. These proteins produced naturally by the immune system and manufactured in mammalian cell lines can build to specific molecules in the body and so block their action. They are being developed for use after transplant surgery to nutralise the action of substances that would otherwise trigger rejection and for treatment of septic shock, cancer and other conditions.

Genetic Engineering is also useful in the fields other than medicine, Chymosin, the enzyme used to make cheese can now be produced by yeast.

Genetic Engineering has also been used to create entirely new species of plants and animals. In plants the new genes are introduced in to cell cultures which are then grown up by the methods of tissue culture.

Transgenic plants bearing a gene for an insecticidal protein from the Bacterium Bacillius thuringiensis are being developed to protect crops from insect attack. Plants have also made resistance to a herbicide called Round up.

Several strains of transgenic laboratory animals have also been created. With added human genes, these animals can act as models of human disease such as sickle anaemia and they may be used to test new drugs and in basic research.
