May she rest in the peace of Christ In communion with the choirs of Angels and Saints! The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

released the following statement on the announcement of the Johnson & Johnson single-shot COVID-19 vaccine:

"The approval of Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine for use in the United States again raises questions about the moral permissibility of using vaccines developed, tested, and/or produced with the help of abortion-derived cell lines. "Pfizer and Moderna's vaccines raised concerns because an abortion-derived cell line was used for testing them, but not in their production. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine, however, was developed, tested and is produced with abortion-derived cell lines raising additional moral concerns. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has judged that 'when ethically

irreproachable COVID-19 vaccines are not available ... it is morally acceptable to receive COVID-19 vaccines that have used cell lines from aborted fetuses in their research and production process.'[1] However, if one can choose among equally safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines, the vaccine with the least connection to

abortion-derived cell lines should be chosen. Therefore, if one has the ability to choose a vaccine, Pfizer or Moderna's vaccines should be chosen over Johnson & Johnson's.

"While we should continue to insist that pharmaceutical companies stop using abortion-derived cell lines, given the world-wide suffering that this pandemic is causing, we affirm again that being vaccinated can be an act of charity that serves the common good."

COMPASSIONATE CAFE

At The Compassionate Cafe we share our feelings of grief without judgement, criticism or advice. We are not a prayer group but we do talk about our prayers for relief and recovery from the pain of our losses. At our last

meeting, we had a book review of Joyce Rupp’s Praying our Goodbyes, A Spiritual Companion Through Life’s Losses and Sorrows.

March 19: Solemnity of St. Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Silence is golden… St. Joseph, the model of humility, and one of the world's greatest saints, is often mentioned as being silent. This silence speaks volumes. In it, the Church realizes his faithfulness, his love and his acceptance of the Holy Will of God. St. Joseph was not a man of many words: he was a man of action. We have only one direct statement about his personality: in Matthew's Gospel, he is de-scribed as "a righteous man" (Matthew 1:19). His ac-tions alone reveal everything else we know about him. He brings Mary and the Child she bears into his home when, in the sight of the world, he would be justified in divorcing her. He leads the expectant Mary into Bethle-hem, and flees with her and her Child into Egypt. When it is safe, he returns with the two into Galilee. He does all of this, because God asks it of him. He never hesi-tates. Each time we read that the angel spoke to Jo-seph, the following sentence begins with the action St. Joseph took. "Joseph awoke," "Joseph rose," "He went." Each time he received a summons, his reaction was to follow the call immediately. Never once did he hesitate. -http://www.usccb.org/

We are extremely disappointed that a bill re-garding the death penalty passed the S.C. Sen-ate without the opportunity for public com-ment. It is long past time to abolish the death penalty in South Carolina, not to find new ways to execute our brothers and sisters, including by firing squad. Every person is created in the im-age and likeness of God; their lives should be protected from the time of conception until natural death. We urge members of the S.C. House of Representatives to vote against the bill, and to redirect the energy and resources that currently go toward executions into providing assistance to victims' families. Please share the following link with your parishioners so they can contact their House member direct-ly regarding this issue: charlestondiocese.org/ south-carolina-catholic-conference/take-action and click "Stop the Death Penalty in SC!" Once the brief form has been completed a message will appear that can be sent directly to the appropriate representative.

MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER

The next virtual Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekends are Apr 15-May 6, 2021 in VIRTUAL 3RE, SC and Jul 16-18, 2021 in Beaufort, SC. Early sign up is recommended. For more information visit our website at:

March 17: St. Patrick

Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. So complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission, he feared nothing -not even death.

"The Breastplate," Patrick's poem of faith and trust in God:

"Christ be within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me,

Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me,

Christ above me, Christ inquired, Christ in danger,

Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger." -www.catholic.org

Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead

SUNDAY CONNECTION

The fourth Sunday of Lent is sometimes

called Laetare Sunday. Laetare is a Latin word that means “rejoice.” Traditionally, Sundays are named after the first word of the liturgy’s opening antiphon. On this Sunday, the antiphon is taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 66:10-11). Even as we observe our Lenten sacrifices, we rejoice in anticipation of the joy that will be ours at Easter.

Today’s Gospel reading is taken from John’s Gospel. It consists of two parts. The first part is the final sentence of Jesus’ reply to Nicodemus, the Pharisee who approached Jesus at night. Nicodemus

acknowledged Jesus as someone who had come from God and seemed to want to be a follower of Jesus. Jesus greeted Nicodemus with the

observation that one must be born from above to see the Kingdom of God. The dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus that followed was about the meaning of this phrase. Nicodemus misunderstood Jesus at every point, but there was no animosity in the questions he posed to Jesus.

In the part of the conversation with Nicodemus in today’s Gospel, Jesus referred to an incident reported in the Old Testament. When the Israelites grumbled against the Lord during their sojourn in the desert, God sent venomous serpents to punish them for their complaints. The Israelites repented and asked Moses to pray for them. The Lord heard Moses’ prayer and instructed him to make a bronze serpent and mount it on a pole. All who had been bitten by a serpent and then looked upon the bronze serpent were cured. By recalling this story, Jesus alludes to the salvation that would be accomplished through his death and Resurrection. The second part of today’s Gospel is a theological reflection on Jesus’ words to Nicodemus. The Gospel of John is known for this kind of reflection offered within the narrative. The words of the Evangelist are in continuity with the words of the prologue to John’s Gospel. In these reflections, John elaborates on a number of themes that are found in his Gospel: light and darkness, belief and unbelief, good and evil, salvation and condemnation. In John’s reflection, we find an observation about human sinfulness. Jesus is the light that has come into the world, but people preferred the darkness. We wish to keep our sins hidden, even from God. Jesus has come into the world to reveal our sins so that they may be forgiven. This is the Good News; it is the reason for our rejoicing in this season of Lent and throughout our lives.
