MISSION STATEMENT

We are a community of believers, proclaiming that Jesus is Lord. We come together as Catholics to celebrate the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, to hear and be transformed by the Word of God, to bring Christian values and love into our world, and to live and share the teachings of Jesus. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, we strive as a parish family to further the Kingdom of God, making God’s presence felt and extending the caring spirit of Jesus.

ETTER FROM OUR

P

ASTOR

Rev. Patrick G. Cecil

Once again, we met last Tuesday for our Parish Transformation process. This meeting on October 14th marks the half-way point of our scheduled meetings. There were 44 of us present. We began with reminding ourselves that we will continue to speak with “parrhesia” which is the Greek term which means to speak “candidly, boldly and without fear; and to listen with humility.” We selected the Building Blocks on which our Mission Narrative will be built. They are:

1) “Missionary Spirit” - serving the needs of others in Jesus’ home. 2) “Communio” - the Mystery that unites us all.

3) “Evangelization” - sharing the Good News of our faith in both words and actions.

We also discussed the Gospel image of “new wine” needing to be poured into “new wineskins.” We want to not be afraid to think differently to reach those who have fallen away or those who have never encountered Christ.

Finally we broke into our four Sub-teams of Mission, Education, Communication and Finance. For the next few weeks, these sub-teams will be brainstorming objectives and actions to achieve those objectives. We will also be attending a workshop on Saturday morning, October 25th. This workshop is for all the parishes involved in Parish Transformation. There will be breakout sessions concerning the Mission Building Blocks and the other implementation of the Parish Transformation action plans. This week’s meet-ing will be from 7—9 pm in the Parish Hall. All are welcome to attend. Please continue to pray for our Parish Transformation.

Complicated Laws Made Simple

It seems that as life goes on, parts of our lives get more complicated. When I first became a car owner ( a 1968 Ford Galaxie) I tried to do most of my own repair work. However if I had the time now, I doubt I’d have the aptitude. My dad, an accountant, taught me how to figure my income tax. Unfortunately, I didn’t inherit my dad’s math skills, and few non-CPA’s can keep up with Federal Tax Law. It’s all I can do to keep records and receipts!

Today’s Gospel is about complications in religious law. For Jews, there were hundreds of commandments in the books of Moses, not just the Ten Commandments he received from the Lord on Mt. Sinai. This doesn’t include the hundreds of other laws that were added over the centuries. There were more laws than the ordinary Jew could keep track of. This is why the Pharisees rose in promi-nence as the official interpreters and protectors of the law. They saw it as their responsibility to guide the Jewish people in the ways and meanings of the Law.

As experts in the Law, they thought they had Jesus with this question. They had Jesus playing in their ballpark so to speak. Also the last thing they would want was for someone to simplify the Law into one commandment so that anyone could understand. The complexity of the law was their job security.

The Pharisees may have had knowledge of their intricacies of the Law, but Jesus had an intimate knowledge of how the Law was lived. He first called upon the “Shema” the words every faithful Jew recited every day, that they engraved on these doorposts and wore on their arms: “Love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” But with Jesus, there is always more; something perhaps unexpected, something that takes us by surprise. “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus made it simple. Loving God and loving our neighbor. A cross-shaped trajectory of love, if you will; one vertical towards God and one horizontal toward humanity. But Jesus doesn’t give us a choice of which commandment to obey. There is no true love for God if we do not learn to love our neighbor. Loving our neighbor is not enough if it is not tied to our love for God.

P. S. We are considering making improvements in the lighting both in Church and in school. If any of our parishioners have any expertise in that field, please contact me at 773-763-0206 or at pcecil@smow.org

Peace, Father Pat

FVPSA Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary

While we’re raising awareness on the important issue of domestic violence during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re also celebrating the 30th anniversary of a vital piece of legislation: The Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA).

FVPSA’s passage in 1984 marked the first time in U.S. history that federal resources were specifically dedicated to domestic violence shelters and programs. The Hotline, first established by the Violence Against Women Act (which is celebrating its 20th anniversary!), is now made possible in part by FVPSA funding. To commemorate these 30 years, the Hotline team collaborated with the National Resource Center on

Domestic Violence, the Family & Youth Services Bureau, and other key organizations to create a short

World Mission Sunday reminded us of the im-portance of teaching about God and God’s love for us to all, even those closest to us. The eighth graders worked on some of the topics presented at the Confirmation Meeting and will be sharing service opportunities with each other.

The fourth graders spent time trying to apply Je-sus’ command to love on another to actual ac-tions in their lives. The second graders were working on why Jesus is pictured somewhat dif-ferently in different cultures but is always por-trayed as the same loving person who performed miracles and taught us how to love one another. A very fruitful morning.

God bless, Marcy

P.S. Please don’t forget to support our Taffey Apple sale this weekend. All money raised will benefit a soup kitchen.

While seemingly far away and obsolete, poverty is closer to home than it may seem. What can we do? Be a volunteer. Be a donor. Be an advocate for justice. Pope Francis tells us, “The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty.”

In efforts to align our church withPope Francis’ call, the Catholic Campaign for Human Develop-ment (CCHD) works to combat the threats that poverty poses and empower the poor through self-help programs.
