Introduction

• Speaking

Pairwork and role play are used in this section to tests students’ oral ability. The focus here, along with the vocabulary and grammar content of the unit, is the language presented in the English you

need section of the Student’s Book. The activities

can be done either by two students or a student and the teacher.

Mixed-ability groups and testing

In order to accommodate varying levels of students in the group, each test is provided at three levels of diffi culty (except the diagnostic test).

• Reinforcement – for students that have a slightly lower level to that of the course.

• Consolidation – for students that are at the same level of the course.

• Extension – for those students that have a slightly higher level to that of the course.

The tests are also available in Word format on the English In motion website so that they can be edited to meet different student and group needs.

Visit www.webenglishinmotion.net

English In motion

Tests

The English In motion tests can be used to evaluate students’ progress at the end of each unit, term and year. There is also a diagnostic test that can be used at the beginning of the school year for placement purposes.

Each three-page test is made up of six different areas which have been covered in the English In motion

Student’s Book and Workbook and accompanying

resources – Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar, Listening, Writing and Speaking.

• Reading

The texts included in this section refl ect those students have worked with during the course. Students read a text and answer questions based on their overall understanding followed by more specifi c comprehension questions. The text includes some of the vocabulary and grammar from the unit.

• Vocabulary

Two exercises test students understanding of the two vocabulary sets presented in the Student’s Book. This is tested with a variety of different exercise types.

• Grammar

Here, students are tested on their understanding and use of the grammar taught in the units. Again, this is tested with a variety of different exercise types.

• Listening

The purpose of this section is to test students understanding of the language presented in the

English you need section of the units as well as

students general listening comprehension skills. The recordings in this section refl ect those that students have worked with in the English you need section of the Student’s Book and Workbook.

• Writing

In this section students are tested on two areas – their understanding and use of the lexical/grammatical/ discourse focus of the writing section of the unit as well as students ability to produce their own piece of writing.

My style ~ Louise

I love shopping! I go shopping every weekend. I really like wearing different styles. Today I’m wearing jeans and a T-shirt. I’ve also got a ring and some earrings. The ring is the most expensive thing I’ve got.

I also go shopping for my brother Pete because he hates shopping. He likes polo shirts and black trousers, and he always wears trainers. The shopping centre has the best clothes, so I always buy clothes for him there. Sometimes he buys his own clothes, but it’s not a good idea. Yesterday he bought a horrible tracksuit!

Today I’m looking for a new bag, so now I’m out shopping again!

Disaster in the museum

Mr Thomas Jones went to the City Museum yesterday with his son, Jimmy (6) and daughter Tina (9). Before they went inside, he nervously told them, ‘Be careful, don’t break anything.’ Unfortunately, he didn’t listen to his own advice. First, the family saw the Egyptian exhibition, and then they went to the fi rst fl oor to see the Ancient Rome exhibition. While they were going down the stairs, Mr Jones (48) fell over and his head hit a glass necklace. It broke into a million pieces. While he was slowly getting up, the security guards arrived. ‘That necklace was 2,000 years old!’ they said.

‘Well, it was a stupid place to put a glass necklace!’ Mr Jones replied angrily.
