BACKGROUND ON NEXT WEEK’S READINGS

FEBRUARY 8TH/9TH FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Isaiah 58: 7-10

The Jewish people had just returned from exile in Babylon. They were poor. The Prophet in next week’s reading reminds them of the religious practice that pleases God most of all, and he encourages them to share the little they have with one another.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2: 1-5 In this reading, Paul continues to address the

problem of factions in Corinth. One group followed a Christian named Apollos, an eloquent preacher who came there after Paul had left. Some criticized Paul because his oratory didn’t compare with that of Apollos. In next week’s passage, Paul defends his preaching style.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive!

Our First and Best to the Lord How do you present yourself to God when you attend Mass? Do you make Sunday Mass a priority or just try to fit it in when it is convenient? Do you prepare for Mass ahead of time? Do you read the Scripture readings and think about what the Lord may be saying to you? What is your disposition when you attend Mass? Are you looking to be entertained? How often do you complain about the homily or the music? Or, do you come to worship and adore God? Do you ask God what He is going to do for you like He is a genie in bottle granting wishes? Or, do you ask God what you can do for Him to help build His kingdom on earth? How do you dress for Mass? Do you take time in silence before and/or after Mass to talk to God personally?

Do you make an offering to the Lord or just let the collection plate go by thinking that’s someone else’s burden.

Think of it this way, when you go to a friend or family member’s house, you typically prepare ahead of time. You shower, put on nice clothes, think about the other people who may be attending and usually you don’t come empty-handed, you bring a bottle of wine or an appetizer. Why wouldn’t you do the same before you go to God’s house?

Remember, God is the Creator of the Universe, He ranks higher than family and friends. Why do you go to great lengths to prepare to meet family and friends, yet for God, you do the bare minimum?

Worse, yet, do you just go to Mass out of obligation and not out of love for God? As we start the new year, let’s make God the priority and give Him our first and best every day.

Our list of names of the sick has been added to our book, “Prayers for Healing” that is located on a podium in the Gathering Area of Church. Anyone may write the names of those who need our prayers in this book.

You may continue to call the Rectory to have your loved ones names placed in the bulletin in order for the entire parish to know that prayers are needed.

After a few weeks we will ensure that their name is recorded in the book in church if you have not already done so.

St. Norbert, pray for us.

First Friday Devotions

Our next “Way of the Cross”

The first Friday of each month, the Knights of Columbus lead St. Norbert in praying the Way of the Cross with Benediction. We always include each of you and your needs as we pray. We begin at 7 PM in Church and invite all of you to join us. When

someone in our family dies, all the friends and relatives gather to give support to the family. Well, that is what the Knights do each month - give support to Mary and Joseph for the death of their Son and Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Please join the Knights - no cost, just some of your time.

SANDWICHES FOR KAREN HOUSE

The Karen House Shelter can always use more sandwiches to feed the constant stream of people who knock at their door asking for food. If you can help, take a loaf of bread and put lunchmeat (cheese optional) between two slices of bread (NO

CONDIMENTS). Put the sandwiches into plastic sandwich bags, then back into the bread wrapper.

Take the sandwiches to the FREEZERS IN THE GARAGE NEAR THE RECTORY. Come to the Rectory for the garage door entry code. God bless you for your generosity!

Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.
